Title: Getting excited for 2019 Spring turkey season-Bowhunting
Post by: RED NECK on December 06, 2018, 08:34:10 AM
I have 3 1/2 weeks left for bow hunting whitetails and then a long wait until spring but I am currently getting my equipment set up for bow hunting turkeys in april & may of next spring.

For this coming season I will be picking up the dsd flock of decoys, new ground blind and recently purchased 4 packs of rocket hammerheads and 2 packs of the wasp dueler broadheads.I can't wait for the spring....looks like it is going to be a long cold winter with lots of snow,It has been a horrible fall weather wise, the worst I have seen in 39 years....I am ready for spring already!

How many of you bow hunt turkeys and what is your equipment?I have used bullheads off and on for years but this coming year it will be big cutting mechanicals,as I also have executioners and hypodermics in the collection,I may add 1 or 2 more options before the end of winter.

The last few years I purchased lots of custom calls and vests etc,so this year it was time for a bigger blind, decoys and more broadheads.

I was hoping to bow hunt them this Spring but fell on my shoulder a few months ago that I had surgery on in January and re injured it. I saw my surgeon on Tuesday and we are going to try a shot in the shoulder and see if that helps so I am hopeful that maybe I still can. I was going try it way back in the Spring of 2002 but had my car accident in Nov. 2001 and was not able to hunt for 17 years really because of that, so it is something I have wanted to try for a long time.

I have never been a fan of mechanical broadheads myself, I am of the opinion if it can fail then it will fail and I don't want to injure an animal so I have always liked the cut on impact broadheads. The other reason I do not like mechanical broadhead is a friend who was a bowhunter safety course instructor for many years and I did a few experiments with them way back in 2000 or 2001 shooting into layered targets and layers of 2x4 and the penetration difference was huge with the cut on impact broadheads going much deeper every time with the 2x4's and the layered target and the mechanical broadheads not opening all the way in the layered target sometimes failing to open partially or completely . I was interested in using them before that but have not wanted anything to do with them since. I would like to try some of the guillotines broadheads, that way it is more of a clean hit or a clean miss situation.

I am not interested in getting into a debate about the use of mechanical broadhead,I really do not care what others use but please do not try and derail this thread. If you want to start a debate start a thread that suits your agenda. This thread is about getting equipment ready and excitement for the upcoming season.

We/I bow hunt for turkey every spring, this past spring stood out as I had 2 bowhunters take their first ever turkey with a bow!!

We had some great success this last spring, a few misses but no lost birds. And my one friends bird was a STUD.

We set up in a Double Bull Deluxe (Double Wide) and the DSD's are with, I use a "White Headed" DSD Strutter I designed, a Jake and a mix of upright, feeding, leading and breeding hens. I film the the hunts and we set up close!! 10-12 yards is the norm and nothing like having that tom in your face! Killed a dozen birds last spring and 4 were bow birds, a few from youth season and learn to hunt, I tagged a some birds including another double and a few other friends. Can't wait for the Sping Season, just put in application for our draw a few weeks ago!

If you are ever looking for pointers or have questions on setups just let me know and I can let you know what has worked for us.

Nice birds,I also do a little guiding and kind of looking for other die hard bowhunters to chime in with their turkey setups with a bow...I found last year I used my primos club blinds and they were a tad small for myself and I used my herters when I took someone else,so my main priority is a bigger blind and the dsd dekes.I have had good luck with the dekes I am running but the funds allow me to pick the flock up this year.

I have shot birds with fixed, mechanicals and bullheads over the years but am I going full mechanical going forward for this year at least.

What do you use to video the hunts?

I did not in any way try to start a debate nor did I try to derail the thread, I merely spoke an opinion of what I would like to use and gave reasons as to why I feel that way.

I have no agenda, just an opinion and it is a pity anybody would feel that it was spoken in any other way, shows we argue among ourselves to much when we should be supporting one another.

I am sorry you misunderstood my comment. You are welcome to use what you want, I am not like some others I have seen that think you are not a real hunter if you do not use what they think you should.

What kind of blind are you thinking of getting? I have a few myself. Have learned that not all blinds are good for bow hunting, and some are but not with larger bows like mine which is 37" axle-to-axle. I have a nice Barronet Pentagon blind that is plenty roomy but I am not sure I would want to carry it all over the place, I prefer to set it and leave it if I can. I also have a Ameristep Doghouse which is nice for me with gun but not tall enough for my bow though it might work with one of the new shorter bows. I have a Ameristep 2 man chair blind, I don't like it for bow hunting at all though.

I bow hunted last spring and fall with a v37 in my tiny little blinds,I plan on using what I want and have for years,I know for a fact that broadheads and equipment have come along way in 17-18 years.I have an idea of the blind I am purchasing,You should shoot what you like and let others do the same thing,a big cutting mechanical is a better choice than a small fixed blade for turkey hunting, there is no doubt at all.

By this line you are really still misunderstanding me "You should shoot what you like and let others do the same thing" Shoot what you want, I said that.

I had 2 problems shooting out of the Doghouse blind, one was that the bow would hit the top of the blind making noise, the second was as I drew my bow back my draw arm or my bow arm would hit either the front or back of the blind every time making noise. I do shoot from the seated position though, that might explain why I am hitting the roof, not sure if it would the hitting front and back though.

We have a few cameras, Canon Vixia G30 & XA30's and a B-roll GoPro for "selfie" shot and Tactacam for Hunter perspective. I use it on my solo hunts as well, tripod setup makes a world of difference.

You will really like the Rocket Hammerheads for turkeys. Pretty tuff blades and a nice wide cut

That is quite a camera setup, the tactacam seems to take pretty decent video,I am just using a safari on my stabilizer that I bought at work a few years back,It takes decent video out to about 30 yards,I have always wanted to film more but when I get an animal that i want to kill in bow range I usually say...screw it and make the kill, but I have gotten a handful of kills over the years on video.

The hammerheads were on sale and I ended up with 6 packs of them,I may pick up the spitfire xxx, spitfire double cross, maxx or gobbler getter as well as some wasp jak hammers. It will just depend if they go on sale sometime this winter.

I am not new to bowhunting and definitely not new to tuning bows as I do it for a living along with years of experience in the outdoors ,working in different areas.I am purchasing the flock so I have them all,not to put them in front of me every time out.Only a slob would not tune or get their gear dialed in properly,I deal with multiple slobs every week and the majority of them try and blame their equipment when it really is that they are clueless and should not be bowhunting.

which mechanicals have you had issues with,I have killed animals with these and never seen one problem.

-wasp jak hammer 1 3/4
-rage 3 blade
-rage 2 blade chisel tip
-rage hypo
-gravedigger
-bipolar
-grim reaper 1 3/8 razortip
-grim reaper fatal steel
-nap spitfire

I know I only started shooting them a decade ago as I shot thunderheads and muzzy's since I was 13.There is no way I am going back to a fixed broadhead for turkey hunting.I have to believe that most do not use a properly setup bow,or set the broadhead up incorrectly.

I spoke with my dsd decoy dealer today and the plan is to get in touch with him mid january and go from there,if he can't get the flock in for me,I will take a 4 hr drive in march and pick them up.Time to figure out which two bows I will use for strictly bird hunting this spring.

I also am just waiting for the blind I want to go on sale,as I know for a fact it goes on sale three times before the start of april. That was my job for years, to order and get the products in store and ready for the sales.

-23 here today or I would be in the stand with the bow chasing a whitetail.I guess it is time to shop for more big cutting mechanicals for turkey season.

Rage I do not like. Relatively often you start to shoot and a blade is hanging. Most guys I know have this problem. A few friends swear by em but have “certain” quivers they use. I use a hip quiver. If something else is needed they ought to give it to you. Grim reaper I tried as well. They broke very easily even when just one tied down practice shot was taken to check the head.
Not saying neither would work they’re just problematic. I don’t go in the woods for problems.
Nap I like. I’ve prob killed near 60-70 deer with their fixed blade thunderheads.
Had friends have heads not open. One was a rage  Not sure how but after a long track job it layed dead w a tiny hole in it. Looked like a field point hit it.
Not cursing any head. To each his own. I’ve shot em w fixed, mechanicals and glue ons w traditional gear.

Sounds like human error not setting the broadhead up properly,I guess it can happen.I have tons of broadheads that I use on different hunts but for turkey hunting after killing a few with a tiny fixed head, the mechanical broadhead is a much better choice. The bullheads are fun as well.

From my experience in life, work and hunting almost 35 years including 26 with a bow is that people tend to blame equipment for their mistakes.I see it everyday,or should I say listen to it.And,I have been known to blame my equipment when I screw up as well,It really is just human nature to make excuses.I do agree that everybody should have and make their own choices,I choose to set multiple bows up with different setups.

Just saw your signature. Hope some ribbing don’t get ya. Mathews and Rage perfect together. Marketers dream!
All in fun brother. Least you’re not using a crossgun

I am currently running these bows for hunting...and this is only 2nd mathews I have owned out of the 100+ bows the last decade.

-Mathews Htx
-New Breed Blade
-Strother Rush Xt (x2)
-Strother Wrath Sho(x2)

I have more than enough different fixed broadhead setups to make all you smile,as for the crossgun slogan, that's about as juvenile as bashing a broadhead for a slob shot or not setting it up properly.....brudda.....

Oh yeah, have even changed it up during a hunt by pulling or adding dekes to the set, I scout like crazy and learn my birds!

Looking to a new Mathews for spring! Buddy has the Helix and loves it, we use a few different heads (sounds like you too) just seems to come down to placement, all seem to do the job.

It's nice to see a few turkey bowhunters on this forum. I hunt them Fall Winter and Spring. I'm a public land guy who has to put some miles on and has ran into some blind shy birds. I use a ghost blind too now days and brush in my double bull at times. I found over the years that 3 blade Rage and 4 blade broadheads work best. I have a few Rocket Sidewinder 4 blades left but this year the Swat A4 mini will be in my quiver along with NAP 4 blade Spitfire double cross. I can get off 2,3and 4 bird kills in a setup using these broadheads so I stay away from head chopper type broadheads. I pack my blind and gear in a custom pack ,that I've been making for years. It holds ,blind, bow, and equipment. It gets heavy so I shoot a Hoyt carbon bow to help keep weight down. The blind also has a weight reducing  carbon frame from back in the day when Keith owned double bull. I have two blinds set up this way. It all adds up when you pack your gear for 1hr plus walks to your spot. I use Deception decoys but I also have a few stuffers. I pack my flock in a custom made bag that holds 3 hens. I enjoy hunting states that have archery only Spring seasons but I like Fall hunting best. It's real turkey hunting. I sold my camera gear and now just go with a Tactacam. My butt spends many hours in a Millennium ground blind chair, worth the money. I killed my best Fall longbeard this year and need to find 1 more bird before I get ramped up for Spring.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/02bafe94c010adea2896fb8d19018a80.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/96c8a3d0f2dfb4f42567d03e4a4d243f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/5188dba8fbebad28dbe700164ecf8979.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/b634d2054fdd2fd5d2dac1a113f2a1f5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/e19d8b15dc669e7d6c99ab01e442fa89.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/7980d63fcf78dac2f946fcbc1f383ce9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/e754583f214945c0c31cfaa6a23cfa60.jpg)

I'm an avid mtn biker so it's a natural fit. The cart is something I came up with, use it while bowfishing. There are better units in the market. Bigger wheels on the cart would be better. That was last Thanksgiving. Took out my second archery bird here in IL. I also use it in MO. I gunned two with one shot in honor of my turkey killing buddy who had passed a few years back. Man we shared a lot of great public land hunts over the years. He is dearly missed. I have a few more birds on the wall,I do not have pics of them, some are at my camp and the others I have never taken a picture of them.I was never really a big picture guy but the last few years I have started to take more, more with my dad as he is getting older and has had health issues.

Tactacam is a fun camera to use. I like the app so you can dial in your setup easily. For ground blinds the camera needs to be mounted near the rest.

It's easy to shoot but the cams/draw cycle is terrible. I shoot 50lb draw so it's very manageable. I bought it when they first cam out, don't remember the year. But I shoot it lights out so I'm good to go.

I am working on one,a 2012 right now.The guy I am dealing with has been somebody who I buy a bow from every few years as he is a fellow lefty,I almost bought it last summer but he decided to keep it for a backup but we have been chatting the last few weeks and I may have convinced him to part with it.I want it for late season up here when it's -25 and -30 for whitetails.I will know by monday,I shot the crx 32 and that was the last hoyt I owned.I also like that it is lightweight for hiking around in moose country.

It would also be a great turkey hunting bow as I like to do a lot of walking as well and have a ton of private land to hunt,my own and multiple pieces owned by friends and family.50-55 lbs is the perfect dw for bird hunting bow imo.

It did not work out for the element,I picked up two packs of grim reaper razorcuts tonight for turkey hunting as well.I am pretty sure I am done buying turkey hunting broadheads but I may still pick up a pack or two of a few I am interested in before next spring if they go on sale.

I received my hammerheads and ordered 2 packs of spitfires 1 1/2" this morning,I am now set for turkey hunting the next few years for broadheads. It is now time to decide which bows to set up for strictly bird hunting this spring.I fletched up some more arrows last night and will be using them from at least one of my setups.

Picked up some Spitfire double cross last night. Seen on FB today that Swat has a new 4 blade coming out. Opens over top with .036 blades. Like my old 4 blade hammer heads.

I assume they are being released at the ata,I am getting excited for the new equipment and broadheads.I am pretty sure I am picking up a new hunting bow this winter,33" ata,340 ibo.I am just holding off until the new year as my turkey season opens last week of april and bear season the 1st day of may.I am a limb stop binary cam guy now.The doublecross looks like it was built for turkey hunting,If they go on sale I will buy some.

It was nice for most items to arrive in a two day span,I made a trade and picked up an e35,65 lbs black riser/camo limbs and sent the htx down the road,I prefer binary cams and limb stops.I am now pretty set of bows and broadheads for the future but may turn my intentions to setting up a bow for bullheads as well,I had the whole 125 gr with arrows and a extra pack of broadheads but sold them last summer when i decided to go all mechanicals this year.I am getting an idea to set up a bow with bullheads as well,I have the equipment and do like them,we will see.I am having a hard time getting pictures up,some will work and some say "error" to big?

Have any of you shot birds with the vpa turkey spurs?i have a pack of the 125 gr and they shoot great but I never used them last spring.

I ordered a pack of the 125 gr bullheads and will build the .300 spine arrows for them,as I have some 2317's(.300) and want to try them out this spring.I will be wrapping the arrows and using a 4" feather, 4 fletch.I plan on ordering some custom turkey wraps from onestringer shortly.

I have two packs of the nap gobbler getters on the way,I think I am setting up two bows for turkey hunting this spring,One already has been a turkey hunting bow but I am going to set two up and leave them for turkey hunting only, one with bullheads and one with mechanicals.  I will be starting to research for a blind in the new year and may pick up a few mouth calls but I think my broadhead shopping is definitely done for the winter, lots to use for the next 4-5 years.

If you want to see how good you are. Try it without a blind and a flock of decoys.  They will humble you real fast.

Ya no doubt,I have done my share of spot n stalk,or spot n hide behind a tree with no dekes at all.I have killed with the bow that way but getting drawn on them is the key,no doubt.....their eyes are amazing.I very rarely use a deke when I shotgun hunt them and prefer it.

I have some excellent property to hunt, all private land. Some of it my own and then some that is owned by close friends that do not hunt but are organic farmers and some other land we have hunted for over 30 years.

Best of luck to you. Hope I will be able to bowhunt anything this year, shoulder surgery means I have to go with much lower poundage, hoping to get a $500 bow if I can swing it so I can deer hunt anyway. The days of 70 lbs. are over for me.

Getting closer for me, we got over 20" of snow and it has been cold but I will be in South FL in less than 6 weeks with my recurve looking for an Osceola. Have been practicing inside, can get about 7-8 yds which is perfect distance for a tom. Will likely use my 45# Howatt Mamba which is 58" AMO, but have been shooting some lately with a 1962 Bear Kodiak Mag. It's 44#, only 52" and uses a different arrow; gets me closer to the ground and shoots just as good... so we will see. Both tune using 150 grain points and I have plenty of the 150 grain Snuffers that have worked great in the past.
