Title: Do I sound any better?
Post by: Sir-diealot on June 15, 2018, 11:55:49 AM
First one is 2 months ago next will be last night in my apartment and third will be a few minutes ago outside. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks. This is on a wing bone call by the way.

The third one sounds good  ,  always practice you will get better
I always practice and I keep getting better
Lip stope placement and the lip placement make a big DIFFERANCE
And last but not is hand placement over the sound hole
My biggest challenge is purring I did once and can't figure out what I did right can't duplicate it

That must be driving you nuts! I am trying different lip placements, I know center of the mouth is traditional but I just feel I do much better to the right of center a bit. After reading Leo's post I think it was about the trumpet I am trying to use less air pressure as somebody had mentioned. I do think that helped me today.

When I first started I started out with a wing bone like the one you have and progress to the high dollar calls now  ,,  :z-dizzy: ,,  when I take it the woods , even deer season and play it I almost always get a responce  I used to practice when I was driving to work and around  when I STOPED at a light two DIFFERANT tiemes I got pulled over that was a joke ..
Ooo lip placement is a factor also  what works for you

My father got pulled over just because of the way he was holding his cigarette, they though he was smoking a joint.

Have you tried putting a lipstop on your wingbone? Put one on there and adjust it until your get a more consistent sound. If you don't have one, make one. You can make one out of a faucet washer, old style fishing cork or rubber stopper. Also pull your air a little longer if you can. Practice pulling a long consistent note before trying to yelp. A little more lip pressure should also bring your pitch up some.

Good advise here. Your air control is very choppy. Take your time and "draw" air and use as little as possible. Choking off the air on the bell end will allow you to use less air and you can open up as you want to get louder.
A good practice technique as Larry said, is to just do a single note and hold it. That will force you to draw smoothly.
Keep practicing.  :icon_thumright:

No not yet though I have thought on it. It will be next month before I can get to the stuff to do that but I will for sure. Trying the longer note now as I pause writing this, sounds very deep to me, I think it should be higher in pitch? Thanks for the ideas.

Okay thank you, my ring finger on right hand seems to want to sit in the bell nicely but then it removes my sound chamber, I will work on it more though. Thanks.

I don't know a lot about theses suction type callers, but it sounds like the internals in the mouth piece may be to large.   Your technique sounds like it's on the right track.  But if those internals are to big it's really going to hinder your progress.  Be similar to trying to make a precision surgical cut with a butter knife.   Even if the technique is right, the end result won't be what it could be.   Good luck and have fun with it.

Just a thought, ring finger on the bell opening can work, but I think you might have more luck sliding the right hand down where the index/middle finger is on the bell end, gives a larger chamber and just maybe more volume/character/control. Also think you might want to try playing around getting some snappy clucks/cutts that will help you feel the amount of air draw/lip pressure needed which will then enable you to transition into yelps.....seems counter-intuitive, but it helped me.

Not sure if you are thinking this is a trumpet or if I just don't know enough to understand? (Not sure if you are on a cell phone if you would see the picture)

I am not sure how to get clucks or cutts. Not even sure I am doing it right to get yelps, all the videos I find on youtube are for trumpets so I am kinda trying to convert it over but sometimes I don't quite get it. This is the playlist I have been working with. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbF6qMoJbTLzkdmzIrqSSxeTkJKKmXVg8

Sounds like your improving...Practice..practice..and more practice...I also agree get a lipstop on it..Cadence seems fast on your yelps at times. Less air drawn also maybe..Lip placement?? Maybe also quit thinking so much about what your doing and play it if that makes any sense. Lol...
Set your recorder out and play then listen to yourself and try improving on it. You'll get it..

Yes, I can see it's a wingbone.   What I'm saying is the hole in the first joint may be to big, making it hard to control the air flow and tone.   I know I've played some wingbones with larger internals (bones) and I couldn't get the sound I'm looking for.  Same with some trumpets.   This may not be the case, just a thought.

Ronnie, you are a killer with a  wingbone!! I was thinking the same thing!

Put a lipstop on the call, play it just off center of you lips, and relax. You're not trying to suck skeeters thru it! I don't worry about finger placement such as sticking one in the bell! That's junk! Relax and play it softly, if it will. Most gobbler bones aren't meant to be turkey calls...only a chosen few!! Close your eyes and try to make the sound you want! Takes time and patience to get the acquired sound!! Took me a few years with folks telling me softer...softer...before it really sunk in!!

Oh okay now I understand. I am guessing I would just have to work with it to figure it out?

Thanks, yea cadence is something I need to work with on all my calls before next year.

Search Catman Outdoors on you tube. He uses home made wing bones almost exclusively. To me he doesn't sound very good but the turkeys sure do like it. He is probably one of the most committed and successful turkey hunters I know of even though I don't know him personally. He uses his wing bones and kills and misses a lot of turkeys on Public land in middle Tennessee. When I listened to his you tube calling I got better on a trumpet and wing bone I think because I relaxed and realized I did not have to sound perfect. I am still learning both calls and still don't sound very great but I think I could call a turkey with either one.

Sorry I missed your reply until now. I do thank you for the advise. I do agree with softer, I seem to be getting better results as I go softer.

Thanks, found him with a Google search. I just have a thing for old things and trying to do it the old ways, that is one of the reasons I want to learn wingbone and trumpets. I like scratch boxes quite a but too.
