Title: Still strutting in central Florida
Post by: RutnNStrutn on June 13, 2018, 01:23:59 PM
I was outside of Daytona Beach the other day, and saw a strutter :turkey: following 2 hens in a field next to the highway. That'll get ya fired up and wanting to hit the woods again!! :fud:

We got hit with over a foot of rain...right at the very worst time 2-3 weeks back. It was right when the birds generally hatch around my parts in N. Fla.  I hope the eggs were able to hatch and poults made out ok.

Maybe the same happened in further south...and the some birds are trying again..

Could be. It's been raining like crazy, almost every day down here.

Dang what part of N. FL are you in? We've gotten some rain over the past few weeks where I'm at here in Jax but we haven't gotten it that bad.

Looks like ours are doing ok places I've been within 60 miles or so west and south and west of here about 100 miles.

Virginia and Mississippi got tons of rain during the hatching period..... I'm sure some didn't make it.... Nature is still working..... ;)

Normally some rain, even a good amount,  won't impact the birds in Fla... they know the drill and where to nest. The issue was this year is we had a week straight of rain during the Memorial day time frame.. what is historically a critical week for our poults.
But everything this spring seemed to be a little late for most the country.. so who knows.

Drove by a strutter a few days ago in Wisconsin, beeped the horn at em and he hammered back!  Saw a hen in Illinois with 5 poults a little bigger than a quail and able to fly

Wife and I were headed fishing and saw 2 hens with about 6-7 poults that we could see, probably a couple more in the bushes.  They were pretty good sized already.  That was last 6/5.

When I lived in Florida, a strutter with two hens could have meant a guy in a speedo with two gals wearing thongs....

Just got back from my lease in SC. Got some Plotwatcher pics of 2 hens with poults cruising around a food plot. It was good to see.

My season was terrible.  very little gobbling, very few tracks and I hunted hard-public and private, some days both.  Went several mornings when there were bands of thunderstorms headed my way and hunted until the last possible second, then got out there again as they passed.  Just turrible.  First skunk in a very long time.  Glad to see some young uns around.

Likewise. Awful season for me. Hunted public and private in 2 states. Had 3 other state trips fall through. Where I did hunt there was precious little gobbling, and hardly saw any birds. These are areas where I know hold birds. Gonna try to plan an extravaganza next spring to make up for it.

Any thoughts on why?  I know a few that killed birds, but the guys that I know that hunt near me were pretty frustrated as well.  Just never got wound up good.  I was fishing in Feb, but guys I know well (the kind that tell me the truth) said they were fired up in February (crazy warm here).  Gobbling their heads off. I can put you on gobbler tracks nearly constantly, and all my usual spots were just plain barren.  I branched out a lot and still had a hard time.  Work was crazy busy so my scouting was limited compared to some years.  Of course I go on a river trip in the middle of May and find strut marks all over the sand bar.  Not open hunting but I am working on an invite to the location for next year.

I heard the same about much of the country for this season. Then again, lots of folks still did well. So, who knows? Beats me!! ??? ???
