Title: NEW "Stumpy" - Ceramic by Chad Hutcheson REVIEW
Post by: SteelerFan on May 04, 2018, 08:27:22 PM
Another winning combo from Chad. This is quartersawn sycamore (which looks pretty cool, once you really look), and easily rivals the walnut ceramic - this might even have an edge. I don't often double-down on calls, but these ceramics are the exception.

Chad is a great guy to deal with, and stands behind his work 100%.

I'll try to get a soundbite next decent day out.

Update / REVIEW:

Chad's Quartersawn Sycamore Ceramic is a new combo that easily rivals his walnut pot. It has a great full-body sound that really makes it shine. It sounds turkey. Like "Outdoors" said, ceramic calls have come a long way.

Chad's calls play well across the entire surface - making them very user friendly. You can condition a small area with a stone, or just run it anywhere. You can get several tones or pitches out of the call, and add as much or as little high front that you like. The call also plays equally well when playing soft.

I was never a real fan of blonde woods, but like "Happy hooker" said, Chad could make it out of plywood or a 2x4 from Home Depot and I wouldn't really care.

Is it the best? Nope... THAT call doesn't exist. Is it as good as it gets? I think so. You can only stuff so many feathers in a call to make it sound turkey - and any more in this one and it would be on a nest right now...

I just received one in a Walnut pot that plays great. I like a call that plays great anywhere and it does. I can easily get a couple different hens out of it.

I am yet to try ceramic other than on a old Quaker Boy Triplex I have, how does it compare to slate or crystal for sound? Never heard on in a full pot, just my Triplex. Nice looking call by the way.

It is a old raspy nasty hen on the tail en and a good high front end but not to high and turkeys seem to love the sound, the first one I made called up a pile of birds u could haul off in three full-size pickups and built myself another one and it is following suit, there is a sound file on the forum steelerfan posted a couple of weeks ago of a walnut ceramic if not mistaken

Bill's hickory really grips well for me on all surfaces. Not as sexy as some woods, but I'm pretty sure it could get a yelp off the kitchen counter! lol

Make one in a corian pot and you would have one great foul weather call.

Happy hooker I would but I can't ever find any corian 7/8" thick and don't know if the ceramic being so high pitched would make a good nasty raspy call or not but if I can find some the right thickness I may make a few to try

Which is the better seller, the maple or walnut pot?  Sound difference between the two?

I have the walnut and quartersawn sycamore. I would hunt either / no questions asked. If I had to say, the sycamore has a deeper tone, and the walnut is ever so slightly higher. Not enough to say one is "better"... just slightly different. My ear is liking the sycamore right now.

Post by: stumpy on May 09, 2018, 06:09:24 PM
It is really hard to say what is better, everyone you meet and play them they like them all but pick one sometimes I would not have chosen but all are turkey or I burn them, some like deeper tones and some like higher pitched so it is hard for me to really say which is better
I am working on a red heart pot now and gonna see what it sounds like when finished but I really like the cherry, walnut, Birdseye maple, ambrosia maple, sycamore
Medium density woods seem to make a better ceramic for me than the exotic hardwoods

I love quarter sawn Sycamore.  I've got 2 long boxes, a short box and have another long box on order.
Stumpy makes a heck of a ceramic pot.  I often carry one of his Cherry ceramics hunting.

What one sounds better is always subjective. What I was looking for was, which one is the better SELLER. Walnut or Maple. Best selling, most popular, whatever you want to call it.

Of all my Pot Calls, Stumpy's Cermanic was the only call I could play on those damp mornings with a wood striker. All my other calls needed a carbon or aluminum striker. Huge benefit in my opinion because I dont care for the carbon or aluminum tipped strikers.

I hunted the walnut and birds responded well to it. I only had it for the last couple of hunts of the year. Broke down and ordered the sycamore. Im gonna be honest , this walnut jumped up in my top pot list and i own over a 100 pots. It is pure turkey. I would recommend this pot without a thought.

Never had a pot call you can run anywhere on the call and it be fully of turkey.

Only ceramic call that has made the cut to my vest.  It will be riding along side my Platz cherry slate, Corder osage glass and Dawkins aluminum next year in my vest for sure which is the highest compliment I can pay it.

Thanks Stumpy!
