Title: Suggest some books?
Post by: Sir-diealot on April 12, 2018, 09:59:48 PM
I am going to try to build myself a small library of books to read during the turkey off season and these are the books I have so far. Could anybody make any other suggestions? Here is a link to what I have saved on Amazon to get in the future. http://a.co/iKwf84W

Turkey Hunting, A One Man Game by Kenny Morgan (The digital version is a real deal).

The Wild Turket and Its Hunting by E.A. McInhenny free on Google Books.  You can download it to your computer or other device.  For the most part the Turkey Prehistoric and Historic chapters can be ignored.  The book was written primarily from the field notes of Charles L. Jordan, a great turkey hunter.

Thank you. I will look into he Wild Turkey and Its Hunting by E.A. McInhenny for sure, Turkey Hunting, A One Man Game by Kenny Morgan is already on the list but thank you for suggesting it.

I guess I am old but I really prefer to read books in paper form, something about holding the book and the smell of the paper that I like. I am also into comic books and have read a few from Marvel using their digital format but it is just not the same thing to me.

If you're interested in reading a compilation of entertaining turkey hunting stories, Bad Birds by Jim Spencer is a good read (not as serious as all the other books that are going to be mentioned).

Thank you for those suggestions. I am going to have to wait a while to get those, they are all around the $100.00 range right now. The last one sold for $13.50 earlier this week, I intended to bid on it but got pulled away from the computer.

It's not specific to turkey hunting, although there is turkey hunting in it, but Meat Eater by Steven Rinella is a book that every hunter should read. It is simply fantastic.

I will second that. One of the very few "professional" hunters I will pay attention to. Listening to one of his podcasts as I type this. He is a very intelligent and well spoken fellow that addresses the deeper issues of hunting and conservation. He would be the type of fellow I would happily share a tree with.

I'll 2nd "Turkey Hunting A One man Game" by Kenny Morgan. Its a good book both informative and entertainment wise. I have an extra signed copy in mint condition you can buy if you want to pay way too much for it.  ;D

There are informative books and entertaining type books about turkey hunting.

I like to read informative books a lot. Learning about the biology and habits helps me get in the head of a wild turkey...see the world as they do. And I want to know as much about the hen, or more as the gobbler. Some books I would suggest are.

"Illumination In The Flatwoods" by Joe Hutto. This one is also entertaining to read.

"The Book of the Wild Turkey" and The Voice and Vocabulary of the Wild Turkey" both by Lovett Williams.

I also like to read studies done on the wild turkey. These are pretty dry reading but can be informative. They are done by various state game departments and their biologists. Some I have are.

"Wild Turkey Ecology and Management in Wisconsin" (Wis DNR),

"Ecology and Management of Rio Grande Turkeys in the South Platte River Corridor" (Colorado Parks & Wildlife). Both those are pamphlets but should also be available online.

"The Wild Turkey in South Dakota (South Dakota Dept of Game & Fish), that's in book form, but may be online also...dunno.

There are other studies from various states online also, you just have to do a search and read what you think might have some good info.

A lot of the information you read in studies doesn't have much to do with "how to kill a wild turkey". But as you gain knowledge you can start to put together what a turkey's life is like. A side benefit is, at least IMO, you gain a respect for the wild turkey and what it takes for them to survive in the wild.

Entertaining type books are fun to read and you can pick up some good hunting info. You have to remember though that some of these older books were written when not much had been studied about the wild turkey. Some contain myths or "not quite true" info that should be taken with a grain of salt.

Tom Kelly as mentioned is pretty good. His first 8 books are better than the ones after those IMO.

"Double Gobble" by Bobby Dale is a good one. His next 2 books...not so much.

Some "How Tow" books.

"Practical Turkey Hunting Strategies" by Ray Eye.

"Turkey Calls & Calling" and "Fall & Winter Turkey Hunter's Handbook" both by Steve Hickoff.

Don't neglect learning about the fall and winter of wild turkeys just because you may not intend to hunt them at those times. Again, knowing about the whole life of a wild turkey helps you put it all together.

@Treerooster thank you very much. I do like biology though I have no formal education in it, that is one of the reasons I always liked Turkey and Turkey Hunting Magazine more than Turkey Call because it always had a biology section in it. I will look into those studies as well. I also enjoy ready about the history of Archery, wish I had the books I have loaned out and never got back, they were quite interesting.

I have "The Traditional Journey" and "The Traditional Journey Continues" both a collection of writings done by several authors. Got them when I visited the  Pope & Young museum in MN. Cool place. A lot of history about the beginning of archery in this country in those books. I found them very interesting.

The Masters Secrets by John E. Phillips is an inexpensive good how to book. One of my favorites I remember when I started my book collection years ago.
Ray Eye also has some good relatively affordable books I think would be of interest to you.
I started out just like you and now I've lost count how many Turkey hunting books I have now. Just to gain information you dont have to break the bank if you dont want to.

Bows of the World by David Gray was interesting though I wish it had been longer. I have read a few others but don't recall the names other than Saxton Popes book Hunting with the Bow & Arrow and Ishi: Last of His Tribe which was quite sad in many ways but very interesting as well though not really about archery as a whole. There is a DVD about Ishi as well that is quite good, I don't remember the title but I will try to figure out where I put it if you are interested so you can have the title. I like both the history of North American bows and the way they were made and used throughout the world and find the different holding styles of the bow strings interesting as well. That would have to be a neat place to visit, I would love to be able to go there some day. Sorry if this reply seems fast, I am just waiting for my GF to get ready and we are heading out there door. Oh one of the next history books I want to get on archery is Longbow: A Social and Military History which looks quite interesting. I love things to do with knights and that time in history so it sounds like it could be an interesting read. I pretty much like any history from The American Revolution on back. Wish there were more history movies on The American Revolution but sadly there is not. Love some of the scrimshaw work that came out of that time in history. I want to get myself a flintlock some day as well as a wheel lock and match lock just because I like the history so much. I hope to turkey hunt with a flintlock muzzle loader one day. Edit: There are some books on archer in this list I hope to get if you are interested, there are some other things there too though, I was using it as a hunting list as well so there are some non archery things there too. http://a.co/ckVH6kD

Picked up Somewhere Along The Way "Stories from the Alabama Turkey Woods"by Andy Johnson It consists of a collection of very short stories, I like his writing style, very easy read. The stories so far have been turkey hunting recollections told in a whimsical style. It is not a very large book, just 124 pages. Here is a link if anybody wants to check it out. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1365392511/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Excellent book, as good as the movie is, this is one time Hollywood underplayed the character.
The real life Johnson made the movie version look like a Boy Scout.

Doc Weddle's two books, Turkey Tails and Trails from Across the USA, Volumes 1 and 2 are high on my list.  Volume 2 just came out this fall.  Beyond the just plain fun of Doc's accumulated stories and cast of characters from so many years on the turkey trail, there's also a lot of hard-earned wisdom in both these books, and with some painful episodes along the way recounted with a humble honesty.  These books will definitely get you fired up to explore new ground and meet some great folks along the way.

firedup posted an excellent review in an earlier thread with info on getting Doc's books:

"I know that Hookspur / Doc Weddle has met many of us in his travels. Just thought that alot of his friends would want to know that he has his 2nd book, "Turkey Tails and Tales from across the USA, Vol 2." out now.  It is available from Amazon but if you want a signed copy (and wish to support the author), you will need to purchase a copy directly from Doc.

It takes off where the other book (vol. 1) leaves off.  While there is certainly "how to" information in the book (a lot on researching and prepping to hunt other states), it is essentially one man's passion (an addicted fool) for turkey hunting and his adventures across American and the people and situations he encounters.  Written in a style as if you were sitting around the campfire hearing him "tell the tale". A very good read, strong on his outlook and opinions and pretty much free from the commercial BS that seems to plague our sport these days.  Paperbacks are $25 and hardcovers $35. Checks or MO's can be sent to Tom Weddle PO Box 7281, Bloomington, IN 47407. And if you don't have it, a good thing to pick up would be a copy of Vol. 1 at the same time. ** Prices includes shipping to your mailing address!  "

Checks or MO's can be sent to Tom Weddle PO Box 7281, Bloomington, IN 47407. And if you don't have it, a good thing to pick up would be a copy of Vol. 1 at the same time. ** Prices includes shipping to your mailing address!  "
Thank you much, I hope to pick them up in the future.

I forgot about these 2. If you contact him directly he'll sign them for you.  I just got but haven't had time to read them yet. Bubba

Excellent reviews.  Indeed, in my opinion, these two books by one of our contemporaries are a step above most others in terms of content, presentation, and just plain old good writing skills.  For anyone that enjoys reading about turkey hunting and all its associated elements, Doc's two books are "must-haves".

One that I'm reading right now and highly recommend it The American Wild Turkey Hunting Tactics and Techniques by John McDaniel.  So far it's the best book I've read.

Thank you I have added it to my list. My favorite book I have read so far has been Somewhere Along the way by Andy Johnson. His second book Dirt Roads and Dogwoods came out last week and I have made arrangements to buy an autographed copy from. I hope it is as good as his first.

I enjoyed 'Wayne's Turkey World, 60 years of hunting' by Wayne Bailey. I suggested it once though and was told the prices on that book have really gone up. You seldom see it mentioned.

Crow killer.  Saga of liver eating Johnson

Excellent book, as good as the movie is, this is one time Hollywood underplayed the character.
The real life Johnson made the movie version look like a Boy Scout.
.

You are right. I would love to see a remake of that movie.

My favorites are The Old Pro Turkey Hunter, Tall Timber Gabriels, both of Kenny Morgan's books, Double Gobble, East of the Slash, and both of Doc Weddle's books.
