Title: Tc encore pro hunter turkey 20 gauge
Post by: RED NECK on March 28, 2018, 11:05:07 AM
I purchased the 20 gauge barrel in hardwoods camo this morning,It will be here early next week at the latest.I also have some 3" mag blends on the way.I am excited to switch my 12 gauge barrel out to try the 20 gauge barrel. The camo will not match, and at first I was a little disappointed but then when I thought about it...I like that the new forend and barrel will be a different camo.I may just use the fiber optic sights for this season but may add a scope if I am not happy with open sights...pretty excited for the new barrel.

Thanks for the offer but the guy who owns the shop where I purchased the barrel is a huge Carlson dealer and I would buy it from him.I may try and unload my 870 I just built.I am not a remington guy and prefer my browning and tc over it.

Not interested but good luck with selling it, good price.I am heading out  today and barrel should be arriving at dealer around 2-3pm.I plan on swinging by and picking it up later and maybe get out this weekend and fire it a few times. My mag blends will be here next tuesday...then the real fun starts.

I just switched barrels and I figured there would be more of a difference in the camo pattern. You can barely tell there is a difference.Looks great and feels great.I can't wait to get the magblend and fire some shells through it.

When i picked up barrel today,I had him order me the base as well,it will be in next week.I am now thinking I may purchase the simmons pro diamond for this barrel.I would use some mossy oak camo wrap I have here.I have an urge to buy a simmons scope with the diamond plex.

I purchased a truglo red/green dot from amazon that was 45% off and will be running it on my 870 instead of the 1-4x20 bushnell circle plex,I took the bushnell off the 870 and wrapped it with camo wrap I had left over and will be mounting it when my base arrives next week for the 20 gauge barrel.I am almost complete with getting my guns finished.I still want to order a claw sling...maybe later today I will do it.

No,there will not be any #7's anywhere around this area,I am done begging and trying to find it from these local guys who make excuses on why they don't carry it.Most are so uneducated when it comes to bird hunting it's pathetic.I will have to deal with what I have.I will say...our selection of ammo for 20 gauge is a joke in this area.I had to order the mag blends and the longbeard #6's.I believe the local shop is getting the hevi 13 in 5-6 next week...we will see.

I am frustrated to say the least.I have spent over three thousand dollars on 20 gauges and my new tc 12 gauge pro hunter and it's like pulling teeth trying to find hevi shot ammo.

They won't carry it because the entire line has been discontinued as of the first of the year.  They aren't busting your ballz.  They simply don't have it and won't ever again.  Look at the heavyweight 6s and don't think about chasing numbers.  If you can get 110+ with the 6s, which you absolutely should,  hunt them!  They're turkey DEATH.

i can't get the 6's and i am not chasing numbers.yes they are clueless about what people are using in their 20 gauges to hunt turkeys up here.I should know...i deal with it daily.

I have never ever counted a hole in paper in my 38 years on this earth, but I do know that with what i have patterned from all my other 20 gauges.I would not ever hunt or shoot a bird over 30 yards. The shops have such a poor selection of 20 gauge it makes you want to pull your hair out.I know all the excuses and lines in the game.It comes down to money and they will not stock it because most hunters are either too cheap or too poor to buy it and use lead shells . 20 gauges are just becoming popular up in these parts. If i do find 20 gauge it is usually average rounds that get you a great 30 yard pattern...then again...what doesn't?The Federal heavyweight shells are just not available anywhere in a 3" 6 or 7.....I find it frustrating that ontario is this bad for turkey ammo.

I know the Federal Heavyweights are great, but from everything I've heard unless you could get a stockpile of them in my opinion I wouldn't mess with them because I've heard they are discontinuing them.
The H-13s I haven't heard they are discontinuing. If I'm wrong somebody chime in please...If you can find them in #6 or #7 they are bad turkey mojo...Winchester longbeards in #6 also if you can get ahold of some...
Can't you order a bunch online and have them shipped? Or is it a cross border thing and it's not allowed. Not sure how that works.?

I found and ordered a few boxes of long beard #6's tonight and I am supposed to be getting the hevi 13 in 5 & 6's from the shop I purchased the gun from.I am not worrying about trying to find Federal heavyweights any longer.I don't care if I ever shoot a heavyweight shell through a 20 gauge in my life.I will use hevi and long beards.

I am debating on buying a truglo gobble stopper to try out on the 20 gauge barrel,I am either going to order one or wait and buy it next weekend when I make the trip to bass pro shop.I have been debating on a reflex or red dot and I want the circle with the dot in the middle.I also have the option to get 50% msrp from vortex and was interested the vortex venom as well,I am just a little more set on having green reticle instead of red.I think I will have my mind made up by mid week.

Decided to try a Bushnell Trophy Red Dot 1x 28mm Multi-Reticle instead,I have a different version mounted on one of my other 20 gauges and have been happy with it.I trust bushnell optics and plan on wrapping it in camo, as I purchased the matte one off amazon.

Just got 10 boxes of Federal heavyweight #7's.  They had 30 boxes.  I just checked the website and it appears they are all gone.  Federal discontinued these amazing shells in favor of TSS which they are releasing in small quantities.  Heavyshot H-13 #7s are available, produced excellent numbers in all 3 of my 20 ga turkey guns, you'll just have to search the web for them and probably pay shipping.  Nitros are another option (not Remington nitros) and I would go with straight #7 instead of the blend which didn't pattern near as well.  I think Rogers Sporting goods still had the Federal Heavyweight #6's, check their website.  Good luck.--Bill

I just got home from patterning the new barrel,I fired 4 shells,1 target load at 20 yards and the gun poi was dead on with the fiber optics.I then fired 1 #6 shell from 30 yards and it was dead on.So I fired 1 hevi shot mag blend at 20 yards.dead on,went back to 40 yards and boom, easily over 40 pellets in the head and neck of turkey target.I am done,I am not putting any red dot or scopes on this rig,It is perfect and deadly at least to 40 yards and I did not have to do anything but load the shell and touch off the trigger. This gun is fantastic. It will be my #1 hunting rig this spring.I am 110% happy.

I picked myself up the long beard xr choke for this gun today.I have a reflex sight that I plan on using,I love this gun.I have been using it the last 5 days.It is my favorite turkey gun ever other than my bp 12 gauge.I also purchased 4 boxes of hevi last week,3 boxes of 6 and a box of 5's.I plan on buying 4-5 more of the long beard 6's as well but not right away.I am stockpiling for this gun.I am planning on getting it dipped in mo obsession nwtf pattern before next spring as well.

I just ordered another 5 boxes of the hevi mag blend and will be ordering another 5 before the start of season so I have them,I assume the 50 shells I purchase along with the 4 I still have will be more than enough for this gun for hunting, for a handful of years at least.

That's a good looking rig, I've ran an Encore for years as a deer pistol & now rifle.  Often thought about picking up the 20 ga barrel for it.  Still might sometime...

I got some time today and dialed in scope and then patterned the gun.It was way off,It took me 7 shells to get the scope even close to decent. It was was high. After I got it close with 7.5" shells,I was planning on shooting mag blends or hevi 6"s for it,I had the .568 longbeard choke in.I thought lets try the Winchester longbeards #6 first and all I can say is,wow. It took me 2 shells to have it dialed in out to 40 yards and the pattern was outstanding, very very confident with this gun out to 40 yards.I never even bothered to shoot any other ammo,no need to for me.

I have 20 some boxes of the expensive ammo here and the Winchester longbeards have given me more than enough confidence to not even bother with anything else.

Yes.Enjoy the new gun.I find it the most comfortable shotgun I have ever shouldered,I am planning on testing it with the Factory choke with a few different shells here again shortly.I already plan on carrying this setup opening morning this year.I am just going to see if I can get a better pattern with other ammo and choke. It is already an easy 40 yard killer.

I am heading out in a bit to shoot the tc again,I am taking this ammo to shoot at 40 yards, one shell each with factory choke. It has been excellent on mag blends.I want to see if I can beat what I did yesterday with lb #6 at 40 yards.

-Triple beard 5-6-7
-Hevi shot 13 #6
-Hevi shot 13 #5
-Federal 3rd degree 5-6-7 (older stuff)
-Federal 3rd degree 5-6-7 (newer stuff)
-Hevi Mag blend
-Win Long beard #5
-Federal Premium High velocity mag shok #6
-Federal Heavyweight Tss #7

I am hoping to remember to take a picture or save the targets, the thing with saving them is that sometimes my father changes them out and throws them in either the garbage or crumples them up and throws them in our bag to throw in trash.I am just not a numbers guy,I shoot and pattern until I find a pattern I am confident in hunting with.I am not sure I will ever counts pellets. It just does not interest me.

I'd like to see the mag blend pattern you get. They shoot really even at 40 yards in my 870 but numbers wise they "don't make the cut". Here's a pic

I fired one each at 40 yards from the factory choke, the clear winner for me was Federal #7 tss and then the Longbeard #5's over the 6's.

I was a little shocked as the Hevi shot 5,6 and mag blends did not pattern good at all at 40 yards. The mags shot excellent last spring.I did save the targets and will try and post them up here shortly. The #7 tss was deadly, they hit to the right about 5" but I have a scope and fixed that. The long beard 5"s and 6"s hit dead on.I was very impressed with the 5's and had planned on them until I touched off the granddaddy of them all,the Federal #7 Tss heavyweight.

I ended up trying the longbeard .568 choke at 40 yards with the Tss and the long beard 5's.Both were awesome patterns and If you didn't want or couldn't afford the tss shell, the long beards would be more than ok out to 40 yards.

I am ordering up 8 more boxes of the tss to have,as I plan on shooting it from th tc for years.I also had my dad try a shell out of his 20 gauge and it was dynamite as well, the new Federal 3rd degree also did very well from his gun at 40 yards while the longbeards both were horrid.

Here are the targets, the federal tss #7 hit to the right with both chokes,I did adjust my scope but just did not have any more tss shells with me to shoot again. It is what I will be hunting with from this gun, there is no question.

I would have no issues using either choke with the tss either, both will destroy the bird but I was impressed with the 5's,I know the lb 6's are an excellent shell, the 5's really were the surprise for me today.I just emailed my supplier for more tss shells.I can pick more lb 5's up locally,as that was the last of the 5's I had.I knew the tss would be the "best".

This is far and away my favorite 20 gauge.I will have this gun in my hands a lot of this season.

I went after work today and picked up my ammo,I picked up 8 boxes of #7 federal premium tss, five for me and three for my father.I am shooting it from two guns this spring. It isn't cheap but for me It is not really a big deal as now that I am dialed in and setup,I will only be shooting it at Toms, and maybe 1 a year for patterning,so maybe a box a year.

Hopefully you have better luck with them than i had.
I had one of those chokes several years ago and got a really great pattern out of a Benelli SBE2. Downfall was the choke expanded after one shot and I had to work to get it out of the barrel. I sent it in for a free replacement thinking it was a fluke and the second one did the exact same thing..I won't ever give them a 3rd chance..
Hopefully you'll have better luck than I had...

I actually had seen a few issues with them by researching them,I figured It was worth the price to pick it up as I plan on using it for my next purchase for next year.I am going to buy a Mossberg sa-20.If I do not get it in mail today I will probably never shoot it from the encore 20.

I had planned on taking my sxp 20 gauge as well tonight but I was talking with my gunsmith(family friend) and he hasn't got gun ready and told me not to expect it for the 25th as he is away working until the 21st.Oh well, lots to choose from anyway.

I find this gun out of any of the 50 shotguns I have owned fits me the best, shoulders the best and is downright my favorite gun ever other than my bps 12 ga to turkey hunt with.I didn't find It heavy with scope but with just the little 3 oz reflex sight  the difference is enough to sight it in and pattern it with the reflex sight after work today.

I ended up patterning the gun with just the fiber optic sights it comes with at 40 yards with the tss #7 and they are dead on.I am planning on putting a little red dot on it,I am just not sure which one quite yet so I may hunt with it the way it is for this spring and add the red dot before the fall. This gun is fantastic to say the least.I am not going to bother with any other 20 gauge purchasing, the ones I have are enough.

The  truglo choke never did show up today and I was not expecting it yet.

This is the first bird of the year and first with the Tc encore 20 gauge.28 yard shot with Tss #7 and he didn't flop once, dropped like a rock, dead before he hit the ground. There was easily 75 pellets in his neck and head.It was crazy.3 toms came in and I dropped the closest one,two were strutting, all were big birds and  this one weighed in at 23.8 lbs, which is a bigger bird for the area I am hunting. Most are approx 20-21 lbs.He also had the longest and sharpest spurs I have shot in 3-4 years,in the area I hunt they do not seem to get sharp, but about 45 minutes away, the ones we kill are sharper and usually a bit longer.

I am in the process of setting up my new to me TC 20 for upcoming season. All I have is the stock turkey choke.

1.  Anyone know if this is okay to shoot with TSS?

2. Does anyone has suggestions for a 2nd year turkey hunter?

3. What choke thread is compatible with the TC turkey barrel?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dazzler!

1. Not sure but I dont see why not, you may want to check with T/C prior.
2. Sorry a little confused.....what type of suggestions are you looking for?
3. Its a WIN/Moss 500 20 ga thread pattern.

I am running a Burris Speed Bead 3 on my gun with an Indian Creek in .555 with Fed TSS #9s for out of state hunts and the Indian Creek .570 with Fed TSS #7s (smallest size we can run in CT.) Both are MORE than adequate for 40 yds.

The gun is so light and handy I dont want to carry any of my other t-guns any longer. I have way too many and am thinking of selling them all and buying a back up T/C 20ga.  Love the thing!

Thanks for the info.  #2 was supposed to say suggested load and choke combo, but I think you answered it.

Hey Dazzler,

I'm running a Haymaker .560 with Hevi Magblends. I also have a Truglo .543 and I got nice patterns with the old Remington Hevishot 6's and Fed Heavyweight 6's & 7's.

My son and I both took birds this year with T/C Encore 20 gauge, Pure gold 570 choke and Hevishot 7's.  Nice even pattern at 40.

I tested a shell just to make sure my scope had not moved since last spring.

I picked up a little reflex/red dot to try out on this little tac driver,I added the camo wrap..I really like the scope setup but if this sight works it definitely is a lot lighter.I also have a few chokes  have not tested yet as I didn't need too and some new ammo on the way.I am going to run the truglo ssx .550 with some kent tk7 asap in this little gun.

I may sell the truglo .550 ssx and buy something in the .555-560 range to test.I was going to use the .550 on a mossberg but I could never pull the trigger on one, yet.

I wanted to make sure that the kent tk7 #7's would be ok to shoot from the .550 ssx truglo so I sent them an email and within 10 minutes this is the response I had

"Dear Mr. .........,

Thank you for this email.

This Kent load will work in the SSX choke.

TRUGLO does not recommend using shot larger than US #4 (3.30mm) through this choke.

We appreciate your interest in TRUGLO products.

Shoot safely,

I just purchased a primos tightwad .570 for this gun,I already have that choke for two other threads.I was told that the kent tk7 is going to shoot better from a more open choke.I now have 4 to test with this gun,the stock turkey choke, the .550 ssx,the .568 lbxr and the .570 tightwad.I am going to get the gun dialed in with the new red dot and then fire one shell from each of those chokes at 40 yards after each shot I will dry clean the barrel.I will then use the choke that delivers the pattern I like the best.I don't assume this will be before opening day,It will be sometime next week.

I received the Kent tk7 ammo today and am going later to sight in and pattern this gun with the new red dot and ammo.I ended up cancelling the tightwad choke as I was not going to get it for a few weeks.I figured I would test these three and if I don't get a pattern I like, then I will go ahead and buy it.

I have these to run tonight,

-Tc extra full stock turkey choke
-.568 long beard xr
-.550 truglo ssx

I plan on getting the gun sighted in and then shooting it at 40 yards with each choke. Then go from there.

I did not really have a lot of time this evening,I ended up just trying fiber optics as I decided to sell all my red dots and stick with beads, fiber optics or scopes.I found the kent tk7 shot very well at 40 yards from both the .550 ssx and .568 long beard xr,I did however notice it shot way high and I do not have that issue with any other ammo I shot with the fiber optics,I adjusted what I could,I say it hits approx 3-4" high at 40 yards.I would just aim at base of neck and boom. I will post a picture of the .550 ssx at 40 yards after i have dinner.

I could use this but I think i am going to stick with Fed tss #7's and my scope.

I wish would have had my scope with me but i didn't. I was in a bind for time.I am happy with the pattern,it just hits high and I was maxed with my fiber optics. The first shot at 40 I shot over,I like the ammo.I may run it through my bps to see what it does.I also plan on running a shell through the tc with my scope mounted.

Heartbreak,
I had a similar issue of bottoming out my rear sight on a Encore 12ga barrel.  I bought it 2nd handle (if new it would have come with a 2nd front sight - note this was only for 12ga).  None the less I purchased a new front sight from Eabco.net (it says muzzleloader but it fit perfectly on my barrel.  I do have a Encore 20ga barrel and compared, the 20ga has the 0.345 sight.  Going to the higher front sight would give you room for adjustments.

I did buy it new and yes I do have the other front sight.I never even hunted with this gun this year.I will be putting the other front end on and testing it this summer.I would like to hunt with just the fiber optics and ditch the scope I have on it.

I took the tc out today, I had to adjust this scope quite a bit to the left after I shot the longbeard #5's at 40 yards and tss #7's at 40 yards, longbeard xr .568 choke. This is longbeard #5's at 40 yards.. I had this scope on another gun.The last picture is at 20 yards at end of shooting trip to see how tight pattern was. I love this gun,Its just awesome.I use a range finder for all my shooting.

I have an itch to bring this gun hunting this spring, so I'll be firing it next weekend getting it warmed up as It should already be dialed in, Its been retired in the gun safe for a few years. I figured It would be a popular 20 gauge but It seems as though only a handful of others on here are using it.

Why not use it?  All I use is my Encore.  Tough decision to make every year, 12ga or 20ga.  Fun to be able to do that on one platform.  The 20ga barrels are very hard to come by since S&W shutdown TC and if you find one you better be ready to shell out some coin.

I have so many, I try and kill with one, or hunt with them a few times and then try another. I patterned this, last weekend, I shot 2 shells, my scope was a little to the right,so I adjusted and then sent a tss #7 at ..? yards and put it back. I may take it for a hunt later in season.

I do like the gun,I have not used it hardly at all. Maybe 5-6 hunts in total, I still would rate it in top 3 of my 20 gauges, maybe even #1. They are near impossible to find up here now, I am glad I have the 12 gauge,20 gauge and muzzleloading shotgun barrels.

I have a 12 gauge Thompson Center Encore. I also had to get a taller front sight. I called TC and they actually sent me two (2) front sight. This was a long time ago, because it was when I 1st started shooting NITRO.

Have a good one
