Title: FF3 and SBE3
Post by: JABBO100 on March 11, 2018, 11:10:30 AM
Just bought a FF3 for a new sbe3 that is shooting 7-8 inches high. Can anybody tell me the best/quickest mounting option for this gun? Thanks!

Do a search for weaver style base for Benelli SBE3 .Thats probably the easiest and least expensive .  You may also want to look at which shim you have in and see if you can switch it to help bring pattern down .

I've read that shimming only effects the relation of the stock to rest of the gun and would not help if the barrel is shooting high.

The shims will not change poi/poa issues when aiming

If you don't want to  put the red dot on I would look into the shim . If you put the red dot changing the shim won't  be needed .

What is the purpose of the shim then?

It's for quick alignment reasons to make the gun fit the person better

Generally speaking, raising and lowering the comb will impact poi.  So in theory, if you lower the stock with a shim, the poi should be lower as well correct?

IMHO there's no way shimming will change the poi UNLESS the shooter did not have both beeds aligned(sbe3). If the barrel is bent or whatever, the only thing that will/should compensate for that is to move the poa.

The shims will help a gun fit a person when wing shooting. It will not change the poi if the barrel shoots high. That cannnot be changed by shim. they have nothing to do with where the barrel shoots.

Think about it like this. Say you put a set of fiber optic sights on the rib of the gun and shoot it. You aim the gun properly and it shoots 6" high. Now put a shim in. Shoot the gun again. It will still shoot 6" high. The only thing the shim will do is change where you put your head to lign up the sights.

Understood, the barrel hits where the barrel hits, but if you lower the stock, thereby lowering your head, that will change your perspective while aiming correct?

you can position the gun any way you want to to make it shoot wherever you want. We are talking about a barrel that shoot high when aimed properly and consistently. Remember you are aiming to reproduce consistent hits. So when you sight down the rib plane, say you see 100 % of the bead and put the top of the bead on the target. Now throw the shim in. The comb lowers but you still have to sight down the barrel the same way. And the barrel will hit in the same place. Turkey guns are aimed, wingshooting guns are pointed. The shims are designed for wingshooting adjustments where you are not looking down the barrel and aiming, you are looking at the target. Now if for some reason you decide to change the way you aim the gun when you put the shim in then this whole convo is pointless. You could just do that from the start and not worry about the shim.

Correct...so the easiest thing to do is to put an optic on the gun and not worry about the way you mount or hold or align the gun.

if the shim changes where you hit then you are not aiming the gun consistently. It cannot change that when aimed the same way. Regardless of where your head sits on the stock

Yea that would definitely be a lot cheaper fix no doubt but to be honest I've heard so many good things about these optics I'm ready to give them a try.

The best kind.  :-). They mount nice and low. I don't have a pic of just the mount. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180324/b008a3e521f80b688aa7b9170c8c39a0.jpg)
