Title: New Ol Tom Easy Rider Vest
Post by: low2497 on February 01, 2018, 09:30:54 AM
Have you guys seen the new Ol Tom Easy-Rider vest? Looks to be well thought out. Maybe inspired by the Dixon?

The design looks well thought out. Unfortunately unless some major changes have been made, I've never owned anything from this company that lasted an entire season. Good ideas, poor, poor quality.

Do you think the new Nomad vest would be a better option?

That vest is made of Denier rip-stop...which should be more durable than all the other Ol tom vests.  But that may also make is noisy... Don't know.  I just wished they had a water bottle holder on the side of their vests...

I have the I beam 2.0 and it has pockets on side for a water bottle and one on the other side that my thermacell fits in. Also has more call pockets than anyone needs. I like it just trying to figure out how the gun cradle works. As is it sits too low for butt of gun when sitting against tree.

I've actually had really good luck with Ol' Tom. I have the I-Beam 2.0 and if I had one complaint so far it's that the internal pot call holders are extremely small. They won't hold a single pot I own. I usually just stick one in a koozie (beer can holder) and throw it in a pocket and use the internal pot call area to carry more strikers. I just wish they would add greenleaf camo to their lineup.

Until they add more camo
options, I won't get one. That's exactly why I'm selecting Nomad over Ol Tom.  Camo options and thermocell holder.

Love my i beam and have hunted it hard the last couple years with no issues.  This vest has caught my eye but am disappointed with just one box call holder. I will look at it and the Nomad though I will hunt my Ibeam this year.  Worst case scenario I can throw my thermocell and water bottle in the game bag as I do not carry a turkey there anyway.  The extra box call pocket is what I would have to think on.  Bottomland is fine with me but do like the greenleaf, that will not factor in one over the other though.

Would like to know more about the gun cradle thing.

Sticking with my russell super Elite 3. It's pretty simple and  I can use the box call holders for gloves and whatnot. I don't like straps or padded pockets. Most of the new vests don't get a second glance from me. Unnecessarily complicated with stuff I dont need. I don't want to look like a member of the bomb squad headed to the woods.

No problem. I ran the gun cradle strap back thru hook to shorten it up and now butt sits perfect. Works great with my hunter specialties knee gun rest. Now I can have gun up and ready at all times and be hands free to run pots or whatever.

I just ordered the Easy Rider .. not to many pictures of the vest online. But I'm defiantly interested in the layout and want to take a closer look at it.  I have been on a quest of finding to perfect vest for the past 5 years or so...and I'm still searching.     :)

I will report back.

I received the vest and it's getting returned.  I don't understand why manufactures make their OSFM vests so large.  I'm 180lbs, 34 waist..pretty average size man and the width of is vest seems to consume me even when adjusted all the way tight. But I find this to be the case with many vests.  I had high hopes because Ol Tom vests (time & motion, etc) normally fit normal sized guys pretty good....not this one.

I don't need my vest to be "tight" by any means,  but do like the ability to snug it up a little, otherwise it creates a ton of noise when walking. So unless you are over 200lbs, or just like a loose fitting vest, I would probably pass on this one.

Now for the good -  this vest is made better/stronger than any Ol Tom in the past.  I have a few ol toms vest now and the rip stop material on this Easy Rider is better.   I did like the layout,  this vest is like a hybrid - not quite a "minimalist" but not a full either.  The seat magnets are also new and improved and the shoulder straps are a new neoprene that I liked.

I am with you.  I would rather be able to try it on and evaluate it before I buy it, but sizes can get crazy.

Dang that Magellan vest linked above looks pretty good.
But you know the quality probably isn't there.

You must be tough on vest or had some bad luck.  I had one last me probably six years of hard hunting and it never fell apart.  Ended up selling it on ebay dang near for what I paid for it.  I'm tough on my gear too.

Thats good to know.  I can't stand baggy vest.

Has anyone else got their hands on this vest?

Trying to decide between it and the Primos Gobbler gen 2

I bought this vest on impulse after trying it on. The material and stitching is much more durable than my I Beam. I have the old Limbhanger vest but stopped wearing it due to how heavy it is. The Easy Rider is significantly lighter. I can get 4 pots in it with no issues. The straps are neoprene and very comfortable. The seat also seems thicker and more durable than my I Beam. I'm 6'3 250 lbs and it fits great. The material is slightly noisy, but not too bad. I think it's a fair trade for durability. I'll be wearing it opening day over my I Beam.

More I look at the vest the more I like it.  Will be getting a few more years on my ibeam but I will definitely watch this vest and at the right cost may give it a go.  Thanks for the review on it.
