Title: Turkey Hunting Myths
Post by: Grey Owl on January 17, 2018, 09:34:44 AM
I read an article called 10 Turkey Hunting Myths. So, I'm wondering what the Old Gobbler contributors think are the top turkey hunting myths. What say you?

1: that a mature gobbler will not cross a fence to come to you.
(they will actually if hot enough duck under a fence or even fly over a fence to come to you)
2: that a mature gobbler want cross a big creek to come to you.
(Again if he is hot and likes your setup and or calling he is coming)

If he gobbles at your calls he's interested

If he doesn't gobble at your calls he's not interested.

1.Field turkeys can't be killed without decoys.
2. Gobblers won't come downhill.
3. If you bump a bird then you are done for the day.
4. Roosted is roasted.

That you can call a gobbler up to a National forest road and to your running truck(with or without the radio playing ) scrapping on an out of tune box call and while breathing out of your mouth. This myth has somehow been passed along for several generations and is the preferred hunting tactic in Louisiana.

If you wear your hat backwards, you can fool the turkeys into thinking you're not looking at them.

These are great! I concur with most of them (fence, downhill, water) as I've seen em too.

I want to test the backwards hat trick haha.

On the unkillable topic - that could be a fun thread - the birds you just couldn't kill (or had a hard time). Thoughts?

I've also heard that turkeys want gobble at night.

Over the summer last year we had some pretty nasty thunderstorms and at 10-11oclock the birds were going crazy shock gobbling on the roost in the dark at the lightening.

fence crossing is one that stands out.  The first time I saw a hen slide under a fence I remember thinking..."Now she's not suppose to do that"  It was then that I started realizing the minute you say something won't happen it will...

There are myths, and then there are lies.   Most people know that one is a flat out lie.   When it comes to decoys, Badonkadeke is the pinnacle.  :D

There is no "magic" turkey call.
Some days they like this, some days they like that.
But if a Gobbler doesn't want to play, he isn't going to play.
Also, you can't get an answer from a Gobbler that isn't there!
