Title: Looking for a new turkey gun
Post by: Wood82 on July 19, 2017, 01:55:51 PM
I am currently shooting a Mossberg 500 12 ga. with a 28" barrel. I have been looking at guns with barrels 24" or less. I have found some in my range (list below). Any experience or opinions on these guns would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mossberg 500 or 535
Winchester SXP Turkey
Benelli Nova
Remington 870 Express

Do a Remington 870 20 gauge youth model build...I'm currently in the process. Been toting a heavy 12 and getting pummeled by 3.5's for years now and was looking for something different. Throw some Fed HW #7s through a decent choke and you've got a 40 yard killing machine that is every bit as deadly as a 12  in a much lighter, controllable, and all around more comfortable package.

What pieces have you added?

So far a shurshot stock and have had it drilled and tapped. Will be putting a Burris Fast Fire 3 on it as far as optics go. I hope to have it camo dipped eventually. If not it will probably get the sponge and paint treatment and I'll just do the camo job myself.

If you can find an older 870 that would be my pick from your list. 2009 and older were much better guns IMO.

Buy a 24" barrel for your 500. You probably already have chokes for it..? :camohat:

I could do that. I would like to find one with a matte finish and yes I have chokes. If i go this route, I would also like to add camo to the wood stock.

My thoughts exactly.

Here's my youth 870:(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170719/901c72f094c30537ca7219909221092f.jpg)

I'll second this.
