Buice Koa set.. I went to Hawaii and was influenced by that dang Preston Lawson to find a nice board to bring home to Billy. He made 6 trumpets- one match set for my girls, and 4 for gifts. They turned out real well. Brass ferrules on the gifts and copper on the girl's calls.

Mr. Billy is a very devout man. He sourced some gorgeous Olivewood from Israel. The calls are magnificent, and they came with a card that authenticated the origin of the wood. It is a magical call. I have killed a few Gobblers with it.

My protege and I decided to have a set of Mesquite calls built for a TX trip. A call to Alamo Hardwood found a board of superb Mesquite burl. Billy made a set of calls that we gave to our fellow travelers.. These WA State Merriams liked them also..

Really nice Buice Cocabola trumpet that belonged to my mentor Cliff Edwards. I gave this call to a well deserving friend. He has killed a bunch of Gobblers with her. This is a fine example of Billy's craftsmanship.

Nice lanyard from Del Crow with a Cocabola bead. Del's lanyards are an excellent accessory. Highly endorse his work.

Thanks!  I am a big fan of Mr. Billy's work. I like his boxes almost as good as his trumpets. Nitro can give you a lot more input on this than I can. I am still relatively new to hunting with trumpets. I am by no means an expert caller. The older ones sound great to me but I think most would agree that Mr. Billy's work is better than ever. As Mr. Garrett said, Mr. Buice has been doing this for almost fifty years!  The beauty of the interchangeable mouthpieces sets him apart also.  Not to mention the different materials and shapes. The square cut mouthpieces are my new favorite.

Beautiful trumpets guys. For those of you that have sent Billy your own wood for trumpets what dimensions does he need?? I am looking to get a highly figured piece of snakewood to send him and I need to know what size. I know it would be easiest to ask him. I have a call into him now but haven't heard back (I know he is dealing with family things). Thanks

Boat paddle, my Farmer is Ironwood/Ivory.

Thank for the compliment. I haven't put up many photos. Need to have my daughter photograph all of them individually with her good camera. I have a fair number of Billy's trumpets. Billy makes great calls. Every yelper man should own at least one from him.

Mr. Bennett has cornered the market on the cool old flattops..  :toothy12:

Nice collection....curious if you find that Billy's calls vary in ease of play and tone from one to the other....is it the wood that makes them different or just natural internal variables when building them.

Billy doesn't have a website.

You can try to get calls on the secondary market or call Billy and get calls directly from him..

Good luck!!

Someone clear this up for me... Have heard his name pronounced two different ways.  So which is it?
Is Buice pronounced with the "i"  like rice?
Or is it pronounced with the "u" like juice?

Renaissance wax will remove the tarnish from the ferrules also- and slow the return of the oxidation. It's good stuff and has multiple uses. Highly recommended.

I'll second Renaissance wax. Guys on here recommended it to me for my trumpets.  It's safe on just about anything. Wood, metal, etc. .
Stuff works great.  Found mine on ebay. Just make sure you use it in a well ventilated area or as my wife made me use it- outside.  Stuff has potent fumes.
Title: Re: billy buice trumpets
Post by: nitro on February 22, 2017, 10:49:03 PM
All Renaissance wax will do is make your calls look great. I apply a small coat with my finger and evenly coat the wood. it dries almost instantly. Give it a few minutes and buff the excess off with a cloth , old tshirt or micro fiber towel. I will make the wood's finish pop and protects the finish for quite a while. If the call or metal dulls, just reapply. It is great stuff. A small can lasts many years.

Not to be morbid but my wife and I talked about her having folks to turn to should anything happen to me. Won't do any good to catalogue them if she has nowhere to sell them. If anybody is interested in being a contact send me your name and number and I'll make a list. I'm talking about buying the collection or most of it at least...... Just trying to make it easier on her is all.

Mr. Billy is a very devout man. He sourced some gorgeous Olivewood from Israel. The calls are magnificent, and they came with a card that authenticated the origin of the wood. It is a magical call. I have killed a few Gobblers with it.

Absolutely stunning trumpet Mr. Nitro. My next will be in Olivewood, Ironwood, or Rosewood. So hard to choose! Thanks for showing that fine collection of Mr. Buice trumpets, he is one of a kind!

Here is a photo from raw material day.. Mr. Gamble brought some mineralized Osage fence posts to Billy from Missouri.. We were blessed to see that when the saw uncovered it- that the decades in the ground had indeed given the green color we were hoping for. Old Fence post series ... Awesome calls came from these logs..since the time the photos were taken, the air and humidity has increased the green colors. They are gorgeous calls.

Got my first Buice at Unicoi this year, it is a beautiful Koa horn with #3,4,5 mouthpieces. She plays nicely, like the super wide range of tones I can get with it. Billy said it is a musical grade blank of Koa, plays pretty music now.  Hope to get some more of Billy's trumpets, I live pretty close to his shop, so off I go  :newmascot:

I tried out several different woods at his shop, they all sounded good to me....But, the snakewood, olivewood, and Ironwood had a little extra character to them(to my ears anyway), they were outstanding....did not try the Osage, maybe next time. Had a blast visiting with Billy, he is a great guy. My next 2 trumpets will be snakewood and ironwood from Billy(because I have the wood already).....By the way, Billy played his trumpet while I was there, sounded really good.....unique raspy edge to the tone that is hard to get.

I am pleased to see so many supporting Mr. Billy. He is a very humble man. His many years as a callmaker have certainly cemented his place in the history of turkey call builders.. I am blessed to be able to call him a friend for so long.

Those on the fence, please call Billy and order a boxcall, scratch box or trumpet call of your own. You will not regret spending the money.

Best,

AG

Amazing calls.  How does mr Buice's numbering system work. I have an Osage #749.  Is that 749 since he started?  I see that the fence post call was #13 is that because it was a special run?

That is the number that he is made in that type of wood. Each type of wood gets numbered on the order it was made.

Billy's numbering system is quite interesting..

Very early examples are likely not numbered. (some weren't even signed.) I have seen a few signed on the outside of the bell end of the trumpet.  Best I can remember, he began numbering calls in the late 80s.

He does number as to wood species, special orders, and sets . There are quite a few one of's and commissioned orders out there also.

Billy's total number of calls produced is a tall number ( many thousands over 50 years, and he is the only one who truly knows how many calls he has built.)

Sharp looking calls. I know you have quite a few so if you don't mind me asking. What is your favorite one and which mouth piece do you like best?Britton 40 or whoever else that has several . I am sure the sound is mostly because of the internals I doubt the wood changes the sound too much anyway. This is more for looks, length of trumpet and mouth piece preference. Thanks for sharing your beautiful calls

i have a question.  i have a couple of billy's trumpets.  Does anyone know what mouthpeices he has besides the "standard" 2,3,4,5 round?  i normally use a #4 on my all delrin and i love the sound but i would like to try others

i saw somewhere he has a V cut for more rasp? or a flat?  i have screw in 2,3,&4 that are all delrin.  just seeing what other options are.

Thanks

He has a flat mp option in each size. I have never known of Billy to cut a V in an of his mouth pieces.  I believe most of those are done by the owner of the call.

Here's one that just came from Billy yesterday.  His 5 1/2 inch trumpet in a pretty piece of Desert Ironwood. Micarta mouthpieces.  This is my first one in this size from Billy and I'm really liking the way it plays.

I cant remember the name of it, its not corian or ivory.

He is not doing anymore screw in mouthpieces in corian he said they were shearing on him.

Its an injected material he just started working with.

Maybe "solid surface"? Corian is name brand of DuPont I believe. Other brands call similar product "solid surface" and some other variations.

The white mouthpiece is called armalite,it's some automotive material,I ordered a call a couple weeks ago and he was telling me about it,says it matches some of the older calls some of you fellers have,i have a number 4 in it coming before long,I'm excited to get it and a few other mouthpieces from him along with that call, but it will be awhile on the call, said he was about 6 to 8 months out.

So, fine Saturday morning spent with Mr Billy. He thanks everyone for their support. Due to ongoing family issues, he asks for patience on orders and wait time.

No more Lignum Vitae or Tulipwood calls  - unless it is supplied by the person requesting a special order. Those wood varieties are done.

We spent 3 hours in the shop running calls and getting history lessons over sausage and ham biscuits. Finer man you will be hard pressed to find.  I brought a few more home. Match set of Holly with the white synthetic mouthpieces. A set of all Delrin hunting grade yelpers and was gifted an exquisite Amboyna Rifleshell wingbone call from my protege. He is a good un ... I'm not used to getting gifts.. This one is most appreciated.

Sublime work.  I have a bunch of photos.. Not sure what I should share. Know this - call ahead of time, set an appointment, get in your rig and go see a real treasure - Mr Billy Buice.

How was his selection of already built calls? I know it's been slim with him backed up on orders. I've been meaning to call and run up there, sometimes living too close can make it easier to put off going.

Looks like a group of great calls

I talked to him for a pretty good while Friday. I made a couple of changes to my order. We ended up talking turkey hunting, timber management and just about getting older. If family issues weren't what they are, I would be making a trip to visit with him. As things are now I can't be gone for multiple days.

When I talked to him two weeks ago he said if he did make it that it would just be Saturday for a few hours. Hard telling, probably a last minute decision with his family stuff going on. He did say he was piled up on orders though, but mine should be coming up in a couple months

To clarify, it's not that Billy is going to stop using Lignum, it's more a situation of - Can't get any. It's banned for harvest. Only dead logs can be sold. Rare. Same with Tulipwood.

Expect more of the exotics to fall into that category soon.

Up until a year or so ago Billy would make up a good many calls out of one wood sigh and put on a rack it might take several years to sell all before he made any more of that wood. Today he has almost no stock built up and because of health and other problems I done think he ever will.

Billy called me this morning and told me he had a call I had ordered a while back done, told me he almost kept it but he knew he had promised it to me,but said in the 52 years he has made calls it is by far the prettiest Osage call he has ever turned...it's made out of an old Osage fence post someone had given him and the blank had a lot of figure but he figured he would loose most of it when he turned it,he said the opposite happened and it just kept getting better...he said it was really hard to let that one go,but he is honest and has to sleep at night so he just went ahead and boxed it up.....to say I'm excited to get this one is understatement, also got amodel and new buffalo horn #4 mouthpieces coming,I have not been able to get pictures to post lately for some reason, hopefully I will be able to when I get it in...

What you sent to Mr. Billy is what you got back.  Every call maker has told me that just because it looks like that one the outside does not mean it looks like that on the inside.  Always fun to see what is actually in there.

Got my Osage fence post call today and man is it nice, the figure in this call is amazing to be Osage, and I see why billy says Osage is his favorite sounding wood,it sounds awesome and plays so easy,I wish I could post pics on here but it keeps saying it is too large and I don't know how to fix it....hopefully someone will come along that can do it and I can text them a few pics of it.

Nice lignum drenalind, those are awesome,I love those copper ferrules too,I have a desert iron wood that has a copper ferrule,I didn't know if billy still would put copper on them or not, those look great...I'm gonna have to save up for a 5 1/2 inch now,I have 5 push in 6 inch ones he has made me but no 5 1/2....I keep saying I'm gonna one day get a screw in too but when it come time I always just get a push in where I have so many mouthpieces already...I'm just gonna have give in and do it..lol

Greentag  sounds like what I sent him almost a year ago I came across some old growth OS sent it two Billie and a couple two another and months later I finally received M and neither look close to what I sent.  I'll never do it again ............ Just a bad experience

You know wood turns colors when you turn it and then darkens back up over time? Coco may be brown. You turn it and it turns red or orange. Year later it may be solid brown again. Many woods are similar. Ive bought 20 trumpets from him, most custom orders. I promise he gave ya back what you sent. They only time he wouldn't have is if you gave him checked wood or something with a bad spot. He would call you and tell you if you did though. I wouldn't give up on getting another.

Picked up my 6.5 Osage from Mr. Billy. I'm a Turkey Hunter and not a call collector, therefore I am not big on showcasing calls. Not even smart enough to post pics, actually. Figured I'd sport the piss out of this one though. Hope to make this yelper "Legendary", at least amongst my family and friends, before I die. Working on getting a pic posted.

How does one contact Mr. Buice? And I believe I've heard he often has some on hand that you can buy rather than a custom order? Not sure what I would want for my first from him.

I talked to billy for about an hour this morning,it's always a joy talking to him, anyway I was fortunate enough to have my first 5 1/2 inch one coming, been wanting one that size for awhile, anyway it's going to be a match to one of my favorites I have from him, a pink ivory, ivory cap that I had a little extra of and he is also making me a couple corian flat mouth pieces, gonna be a first for me with the short trumpet and the flat mouth pieces,It's going to be a pretty long time before I get it,should have it by next spring season hopefully.

Got a call from Mr. Buice this afternoon. My latest is ready. He sounded much better on the phone today than the last time that I talked with him earlier this year. He sounded plum wore out back in March.
Can't wait to see what he did with this piece of ironwood. He said it turned out gorgeous. To be continued.

Here's a matched set of Holy Land Olive wood. Got two sets of Mps one in mammoth ivory and one in olive wood. I provided the olive wood, ordered it from Israel, and the ivory and the buff horn for the end caps. Not sure what the ferrule is but I think maybe copper. I'm sure my phone cam pics wont do them justice; their pretty stunning to me, when I ask Mr Buice if there was much figure to the wood He said it was "ok". I'll try and send a pic of each mp. My pics are always small and sideways so here goes.

I got this 5-1/2" all Delrin from Billy a couple weeks ago. Not as pretty as wood, but she has one heck of a ring to her(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210217/01dc6197ff636f9dfbe9095785e22ac4.jpg)

Argentine Lignum vitae (Vera wood)
This is some cool wood. Very aromatic. Great tone. Changed from a pale tan to this deep green in the sun.

Very nice. I ran those at Billy's shop. They play . I dropped two Cocus blanks and the best piece of Ironwood I could find. Hoping they turn well.

Also picked up these two. From some ancient Rosewood found in a Bowyer's shop in Central WA. Billy made three fine yelpers with it.

Bunch of custom orders from JKL's were almost ready. Mr Billy gave me an update on his future plans.

This threads not been bumped in too long.

Started my Buice collection earlier this month. Thanks to the help of a couple members here, I've been able to pickup a Osage and a Fence Post.

Spoke with Mr. Buice two weeks ago. He told me he is not taking new orders and is backed up until roughly this fall. He's making some changes going forward so it feels like less of a job. Ordered some of his other mouth pieces so I can get a feel for what works best. Hoping to eventually get a delrin trumpet from him.

Hi all, new to forum. I would like to communicate with Mr. Buice to be added to his list for a trumpet, if possible. I saw an earlier post that he is no longer accepting requests but still have hope (I'm willing to be patient!). Frankly, many of you have noted your interactions with him to be very positive, so I'd be interested to just talk trumpets with him even if I can't be added to his list. I also respect if it is not ok to cold call him. Would someone please let me know the method and/or etiquette to contact Mr. Buice?
Thanks in advance

So some know now Billy is no longer adding to his list, If everything goes good he finish up his list Jul.or Aug. after that point he will make call when he wants, no custom orders. If you you get in touch with him and he has something made up that you want he will sell it to you, but will not take a order for something special.

When I last was at Billy's on March 13, he asked me not to make this public. It is true. He has had one incredible career as a call maker.  More important to me, he is a mentor, friend and brother in Christ.

I got 3 blanks to him in person that day and hope that when he wants to build the calls that we will both be pleased with "what the lathe uncovers"

For over 30 years I have been a customer of Billy's and over time, I have been deeply blessed to spend time with him, learn from him and enjoy a friendship with a fine man.  One of the best part of being Billy's friend is that I was able to introduce him to some of my friends, who over time became part of Billy's circle. He has taught us all a great deal indeed.

I wish him well as he transitions to a pace he is comfortable with as he focuses on his family.

Thanks for all you have given me Mr. Billy! I have enjoyed every moment I spent in your presence.

Good for Mr. Billy!  I have a call on the list that I look forward to getting but I also look forward to calling to see what he has on hand when he builds some inventory so I can also try to get a few wisdom nuggets through conversation.

Billy is not retiring just going to stop taking orders, he will make what he wants, when he wants, if you call him and he has something you want he will sell it to you. Also if he wants to take several months off and make nothing, he has nothing to worry about.

He will call you with a total amount and you send a check or money order Then he ships the call. He doesn't really give tracking or anything. Think he told me he goes to post office once a week? Maybe Friday? To ship calls.
