Title: Opinions on a Sx3/rhino/nitro pattern !!!! Updated pattern pics!!!!
Post by: RiverRoost on March 07, 2016, 10:26:20 PM
The place I shoot at has backstops at 55 and 100 yards. There typically is a metal frame there we can move but it was gone last weekend. So, I tested the nitro H518 on paper on a tree at 22 yards and get the poi pretty dang close to poa. The only plce I had to pattern was at a distance of 15 yards farther than we are allowed to talk about on here. Think I had a little drift to left but what do Yall think my pttern looks like so far. This is with a sx3 and a rhino .670 I've had for a while.

Have my own frame getting built so I can test at 40 this week.

Drew a 10" around the pattern to the lower left of target and got 106 & 109

That's a far cry from their results lol - They are saying 280+

It will kill but personally I think since that's the choke/shell they recommend for your gun it should do better...  Maybe at 40 yards it will be what they say.

Good Luck!

I think what they publish is at 40 yards but that seems like a lot to jump up in just 15 yards to get their results. This is farther than I like to pattern but using what I have.

No offense intended at all....but those are most definitely not the results you should be getting.

I've never done a deep cleaning or polishing on this gun. Had it since december of '14. Would this improve the pattern to what they are saying.

Again, this is 55 yds and they are saying 40 but I've never patterned much to know if it normally falls off that much between 40 and here.

Should I change to a tighter choke?

15 yards past 40 yards is quite a bit when it comes to patterning.  It would help to deep clean the barrel.  Then try to shoot it at 40.  I think you will be surprised.

That's a killer at 55-yds, but I would work on your POI. Your pattern should improve vastly at 40-yds. Good luck and looking forward to seeing your 40-yd patterning results.

Cleaned the barrel pretty good the other day. Ran a bore snake through it once, then ran several patches with a powder and plastic solvent soaked over a brush through there several times. Left the solvent in barre for about 30 min then came back w a soaked patch then dry patches until clean and dry. Shot a kent turkey load starting off today then shot my rhino 670 at the backstop past 40 and then one at 40. I'm coming up with 245-255 in a 10" at 40 yards. Here's the pattern.

Keep in mind that I wasn't able to shoot at 40 yards last time so to keep things equal I went back and shot at the backstop first, which was 15 yards past 40. Got 109 in 10" last time and 139 this time.

Here is a pattern at the backstop after cleaning

This next pic is at the backstop with a .660. It seemed to put larger shot size on paper for some reason over the .670

Do a Clark Bush (allaboutshooting) deep clean on your barrel and youll get a better pattern. :firefighter:

My buddy let me borrow his rhino 660 as well but I didn't shoot it at 40 yards due to how hard it is to get nitros quickly. What do Yall think it should look like at 40? Better/worse?
