Title: Hunting plans
Post by: bigbird on February 21, 2016, 12:40:17 PM
Where is everyone hunting this year, both home turf and travel plans? I'm going to be hunting here in southern Indiana and in Kentucky this year. Good luck to all my teammates this year and stay safe out there.

I will be hunting here in SC. Found out today that I am welcome to hunt my old deer lease again this year so that was great news. I will also hunt my father in law's farm and some public land. We have only three tags this year so maybe I can fill them quickly.

I am also supposed to be going to Kansas to hunt. I am really excited about going out there as I have never hunted out of the southeast. Hopefully I can fill both tags there.

I would love to hit another state and if I tag out here in SC quickly then I may have to hit the road. We do not leave for Kansas until 4/22 so I will need to go somewhere or find someone to hunt with if I am out of tags early in our season.

I'll be in Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, and looking good for Texas. Will open up my year youth weekend in MS with my son.

TX is nice but very little public land so you'll end up with an outfitter unless you have a connection.  I used an outfitter but it just felt wrong hunting around feeders, TX is big on baiting.  Don't know if I would go back unless I found a better outfit to use.

I'm with you on the feeders! The farm I hunt is a buddy's lease and they do have feeders, but during turkey season they aren't running the spin feeders just huge gravity protein feeders. The one time I went I hunted for 2 days and only saw a feeder when I went to help fill them.

The ranch we hunted had 50 gal. drums with legs and bin welded beneath it that was gravity fed and was topped off with corn daily.  It didn't make the hunting any easier just couldn't say if the turkeys were coming into my calling or they just wanted to eat.  Filled two tags but still felt a lil' dirty about the whole set up.  The one highlight was belly crawling thru prickly pear cactus and mesquite trees to try to get within range of a gobbler, it was hot and all I could think about was rattlesnakes.  If someone would have shook a baby rattle behind me I would have jumped out of my skin!

I hunt in Colorado, 1 1/2 hours to the southwest of my home in central Colorado. I've never had access to private land, asked many of times but to no avail. Thanks lands owners! Im too poor to buy a guided/private hunt. Oh well, the freedom of BLM and the national forest is hard to beat. Ain't much in it but oh well its fun to hike around in. I lived and hunted in Hawaii, Florida and Colorado all have plenty of space to roam, Hawaii being technically the most limited but Florida the most overcrowded.
Recently I've looked into hunting Nebraska this coming spring but when I looked at the public lands available on their website I couldn't help imagine a scenario where everywhere I go is going to have some local from the neighboring town or a traveling hunter/party intent on doing the same thing Im going to do. Lame!!! Its getting to the point where Im contemplating on not even hunting anymore until I get my own land. Im not going to beg for permission anymore just to get turned away. And I hate calling to other hunters and vice versa.
Im obsessed with turkeys and turkey hunting and have been for years! Cant get enough especially when the CO limit is one per hunter. Whats your take on southern NE, is it worth my time? Should I go to New Mexico? Im not doing Texas thats for sure, looked into it a few years ago. Texas is a prime example of bad hunting management, ethics and practices. I liken Texas style hunting to the exact thing I never want to do!!!!

:welcomeOG:

Not being an expert on Texas, only turkey hunted once, but I have deer hunted a few private ranches and a couple outfitted places. I've never been to a state that over all has better cared for wildlife than Texas. They have the management end figured out. I can't think of a state that has more turkeys or deer than Texas. I understand you may not like the style of hunting they do, but their management practices over all seem solid. On another note, Colorado is a state I'd like to hunt one day. Never been, but pictures look awesome.
