Title: Getting ready.
Post by: davisd9 on February 17, 2016, 08:22:04 AM
With our private land youth day being about 3 weeks away and our private opening being in a month and 3 days I have started preparing the vest. I have chosen my calls and gotten them put in the vest. Also got my thermocell, gloves, back track, masks, tote, and a few other items in it. There may be a few items here and there to add but she would be ready to hunt tomorrow and I know for sure I am ready to hunt!

It looks like a bunch of calls, but honestly I have cut back on the calls I have been carrying the last few years, haha!

Let the count down begin!

Looks like a heck of a starting line-up. Will start scouting this weekend.

Nice set up.
How do you like that Black Widow?
I'm thinking about buying a cheaper call for rainy hunts. Since I'm limited to when I can go I need to make the days count.

Do not got a youth to take yet, but I have put offers out. Hopefully it will line up where I can take one.

Yeah, I love the black widow. I have other glass calls but that one stays in my vest. The black widow, the triple glass, and a power Crystal (old one) are three really great production calls.

Ok thanks for the info. I've never used those but I'll probably pick up one and try it.

My starting line up. I'll have a few odds and ends in the vest, but that's my call line up. One pot will end getting benched as I usually carry two not three, but I can't decide.

Not sure who made the box, it was a gift.  It's got a strutting gobbler with a hen.  Thanks about the wingbones, a side hobby of mine.  I used gobbler bones and hen mouthpiece.  I've made them with all gobbler bones before, little deeper tone but sound good.  I've got some jake bones to piece together on my workbench.

Beautiful weather here at the moment. Took advantage of it yesterday and walked in the woods behind the house with my vest and practicing a few calls. Birds had to be gobbling this morning. We are officially under 1 month in SC for our private land opener.

I use the lower portion of the wing, just clip it at the last joint where the wings spread out then remove that flap of skin so your just left with the portion of the wing that has the primary feathers.  You should only have a little bit of flesh to deal with, trim any excess you can and borax it and let it sit and sit and sit and sit.  I let them dry for several months if I can, just keep them on a piece of cardboard with the fleshy end covered in borax.  Never use salt, it will only cure it and not dry it like borax.  The wings I use are hen wings from a fall bird, i like the hen wing because it has much different sound than a gobbler wing.  If you flap both together you notice the difference, plus the hen wing is more compact.

Heard one gobble one time behind my house Friday morning while letting our dog out.  Next door neighbor keeps a feeder at the very end of his yard in the woods and has been seeing 30-40 behind his house, shame we live within city limits  :fud:.

You buy your KS tags yet ? They raised the price a good bit compared to last year?

I wish we could.  My neighbor and  I both would have killed a lot of nice deer and turkeys.  I just enjoy the pics he gets.
