Post by: deerbasshunter3 on February 25, 2015, 04:06:40 PM
After getting my gun sighted in, this is my final shot at 40 yards.

As the title states, I am shooting a Remington 870 Express SuperMag. 28" barrel. Hevi Shot .662 choke. Winchester LongBeard 3" #6.

After seeing how the pellets in that 40 yard pattern are grouped together in spots. I believe I'd back off to a .665 or .670 choke with that load to get a more evenly spaced pattern.

Is that going to give me a tighter pattern or open it up a little bit? I don't know much about chokes.

The larger the constriction size, the more open the choke is.  But you're talking about thousandths of an inch.  Normally when your pellets "wad up" like yours did on that target the choke is a little too tight and its "blowing" your pattern.

You think maybe a .665 would make the difference or not enough of a difference to change it?

This is my 40 yard target from the range today. Turns out I was just in my own head. I held the same POA at 10, 40, and 60. I think alot of people are going to say that I need to adjust my sights to bring it over to the left a little bit, but all in all, I feel confident sitting in the turkey woods with this gun.

This is my 10 yard target:

And this is my 60 yard target. Sorry for all of the posts but it would not let me post all three pictures in one post. There are 96 pellets inside of the 10" circle.

Nice patterns, but be forewarned, no matter what Winchester or the Drury boys would have you believe, lead 6s do not have the horsepower to kill birds at 60 yds.

I was just shooting at 60 to see what it would do. To be honest, I do not see how people can hold on a bird that far and still make a steady shot. As a beginning turkey hunter, I do not plan to shoot past 40. Like I said, just wanted to see what it would do.

That's a nice pattern but that 10 yard pattern is why I'm not shooting them this year.  Killed three birds with them last year but two of the three were 20 yards and had to follow up with running shots. No room for error with those up close.

I only took the one shot at 10 yards, but it isn't as tight of a group as I would have expected it to be at 10 yards.

What are you shooting this year? I am just a beginner, but won't every load be that small of a group at 10 yards?

What loads are you shooting and what does your 10yd pattern look like?

Every turkey load I have shot on paper at 20yds and closer looks like that.   Honestly, from what I've seen at 10yds a low brass dove load of 7.5's doesn't look much different.

Win HV lead #5 and #6
Federal HV lead #6
Federal FCW #7
H13 6's and 7's in 12 and 20 gauge

chokes range from .550 in the 20 gauge, .660 and .676 in the 12 gauge

Agreed . pattern density fails before penetration will does not apply anymore.

Switched to Hevi 7s. I know they're all tight at 10. Those longbeards were almost that tight at 20 for me.  I had great patterns at 35-40.  I felt like I was only getting a decent hunting pattern over a very short range.  Probably my imagination but my confidence was shaken on two of the three birds I shot last season.
