Don't feel bad Tom, this is my 30th season.  I started young (age 7) but you know what they say, it's the miles that count, and fellers I've worn out more than one pair of shoes.

This might only be my 7th season coming up but I've killed 10 birds in 6 years. Our limit is 2 so in 6 years I'd say 10/12 ain't bad for a rookie. Lol! I've also called up 2 others that were killed by my pawpaw. It was hard for me to put down that fishing pole in the spring but I'm glad I did!

Went to get my ears lowered this afternoon and saw a longbeard on the edge of a treeline, might have to put on tennis shoes for him :z-guntootsmiley:
Got a new piece of property this year that looks very VERY promising.

I'm shooting the longbeard 3.5" 5's out of the 835. The little 870 20 ga. I'm gonna shoot the federal heavyweight 7's. As soon as deer seasons over and I get a little time I'm gonna pattern them. Once deer season goes out on February 10 our turkey season comes in on March 15. So we don't have very long in between.

The 935 feels jealous. I was holding the new 1187 again and stroking her and I don't know if it was thunder or jealousy but the 935 almost fell out of the shotgun cabinet

Guys I'm posting this on the turkey gun board also but I got a question. I got the 11-87 I've been bragging about (90's model original bottomland) shooting 3in long beard #5's through a jellyhead maximum .660 choke. I got the TG magnum gobble dot sights mounted on the rib and "zeroed" in. I'm use to shooting 3.5in #6's and turning high numbers out of other guns and this is the first time I've shot #5's at all. My numbers were low I think...160 to 170 tops is what I guess because I didn't have a true 10in circle but close to it. I was aimed at a turkey target and had 20-25 in the head every time.  I was shooting at 68 degrees at 41 yards (lazered). Up at 20 yards I'm good to go with a good even pattern that I didn't bother counting. Enough smack to do the deal id say most the shot in a cantaloupe size area with the overwhelming majority in the head/neck. Since I'm new to 5's do I have killing numbers out to 40 or am I coming up short?

Those 5's will work perfect. Don't worry about #s I would rather use 5's  over 6's anyway.

We over think numbers in all reality any thing over 100 is a killing pattern.  I would shoot #5 with 160 + all day and be glad to do it.

keep in mind that theres a heck of a lot more pellets in the 3.5 6s than the 3" 5s

Ok guys shot the 5's again at about 10-15 degree cooler outside. 57 degrees. (Rem 1187 w/ jellyhead max and 3in Win LB #5's)

40 yards and 67 hits in the turkey and 142 in the 12 inch circle. Point of impact was 2-3 inches low possible jerk.
10 inch circle was 143 hits with an overall good even pattern

Browning Belgium A5 12ga 29.5 full choke
Winchester Rooster XR 2.75 #6
28 yards and 57 degrees

179 hits in 12 inch circle and 88 in the turkey.
187 in the 10 inch circle on back of paper. Point of impact was a tad low.

Overall for a 2.75 gun it's a shooter at 30 yards

Rechecked the poa/poi and I was low. Slight adjustment and uh-oh for gobblers!

150 in 12 and 48 in turkey which was less in the turkey but before most was in the beard up to the waddles and only 17 from waddles up. Now it's 30 from the waddles up and the dense part of the pattern covers both sides of him. Compare pics

Also a 4 degree drop in temp over 15 minutes and only 123 in the 10 compared to 143. But the pattern is where it should be now and not low. Man tempature plays a big role.

Guys I have an obsession. 2 more turkey guns are enroute to the FFL man here via FedEx.  Is 6 dedicated turkey guns over kill?

Remington 870 3.5in, bottomland 26in barrel w/ .665 jellyhead
Mossberg 935 24in barrel w/ ssx
Remington 1187 3in, old school bottomland 25 in barrel w/.660 jellyhead maximum
Remington 870 3in, old school bottomland 23 in barrel w/ .660 jellyhead maximum
Remington 870 3.5in, advantage camo 23 in barrel (choke undecided)
Mossberg 835 24in barrel, original real tree camo w/ ssx

Plus bought RoosterXR shells for the old Belgium Browning A5

That was a range finder 40 yards. 160. This is a  9 "circle. With a mossberg 935 ssx tube. I witnessed it.

They are bad news. I think his 935 is a 28" barrel. Mine put up good #'s for a 20" barrel. It has a ssx also. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/15/53d5f20a251aa83e996b1aad90225fb5.jpg)

I got video of footondaface shooting his 935 yesterday I need to post it.  It was pretty funny. He didn't know I was videoing it. Motrin might be needed. I feel your pain. I'm gonna shoot my 835 today with 3.5" longbeard 5's to see how they do.

Ouch. I took out the 870 SPS yesterday.  Screwed up and only brought the Rhino. Hevi13 worked stellar, the Federal Heavyweight #6s at 20yds were really good but absolutely horrible at 40. Going to try the Sumtoy next week with both rounds and them also plan on going to Hazlehurst and try a Jebs.

He tried the mag blend and fed. HW 7 the other day. I think the best pattern we could get was 164 with mag blend and 163 with hw. They might get better when the weather warms up. He got 160 with longbeard #4's all were 3.5" shells. All shots were 40 yards and 51*

I've been looking too.  Same gun with Fed HW #7 and either a Simtoy 562-5 or a Trulock Fed #7 choke.  I'm leaning to the 21" pipe.

Post by: turkey buster on March 05, 2015, 07:28:15 PM
I've been looking all evening and I'd like to add a muller red dot to one but my options would be to buy a saddle type mount or have it drilled and tapped to accept a base. What sounds best to you?
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: Gooserbat on March 05, 2015, 07:52:23 PM
Drill, with out a doubt. Adding a saddle only adds extra weight and an extra link that can fail.

Post by: ericjames on March 05, 2015, 08:08:49 PM
I really like the 21" youth 20ga. 870 of mine. It's gonna be hard to use it, I just have confidence with my 835. With the federal HW 7's I got 130 in a 10" @ 40. That was around 50 degrees so it should get a little better with another 10-15 degrees. All I have is a tightwad choke that I got from a friend. I guess that's plenty. I'll try to find the pic. I really like the light weight though.
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: turkey buster on March 05, 2015, 08:11:01 PM
I'm gonna get me a quote on the cost to have it drilled and tapped. I was leaning that way. If it's not too expensive then I'm pulling the trigger and building one. I know it sounds crazy to base my purchasing a gun on one small detail like that but I'm not paying a crazy fee for it.

Fed Heavyweight 7's will probably be the shell of choice and I for some strange unknown reason have a Primos Tightwad here at the house for a Rem 20.
Title: General Discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 05, 2015, 08:25:10 PM
What would you all use?  142 in the 10 with #4's out of the 835. Or 130 with federal HW 7's. With 20ga.
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: turkey buster on March 05, 2015, 08:36:28 PM
The ideal of the 20 gauge is the toting a lighter gun with less recoil to me. So I'd say carry it. But them 4's will rock his world!! Kind of a what you in the mood for thing
Title: Re: General Discussion

Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 05, 2015, 09:41:00 PM
I understand the weight idea of it. My only problem is I've never shot a bird with the HW 7's and I don't trust them. I guess I have to start somewhere. I know once I shoot one with it I will probably fall in love. The recoil is probably half what the 835 is. That I really like
Title: Re: General Discussion

Shoot one into plywood(not OSB) at 40 and then put your lead load into it.  I know it will out penetrate lead 5s and likely your 4s.  The stuff is plane poison.  I swatted one last year at about 55 misjudged yards.

FedHW is a different as animal than lead, its even a different animal than Hevi.  I've got a 10+ year supply and still buying it.
Title: General Discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 06, 2015, 12:18:40 AM
Ok thanks for the input. I'll try it out on some plywood. I really would like to use the 20ga.  I don't wanna buy a bunch of HW up because this summer I wanna try to buy me some tss. That's the only reason I bought a 20. I want to load up some 8x9 tss or just straight 8's. I just didn't have time to get everything bought up and have it tested. Hopefully I can have it done before next year

Well bought a youth model 870 20 gauge with 21 in barrel today. It's at my gunsmiths shop and getting drilled and tapped with a base installed. Bought 6 boxes of heavy weight 7's in 3in today on bass pros website and picked some magnum blends up in his shop. I got a tightwad I'm gonna try first. Optics is gonna be my mueller quick shot that I took off a 870 12 ga that I sold.

That's true. I just got back home. Fixing to leave out again for a little adventure. I heard 2 gobble a few times each. They had probably 8-10 hens with them. I got back to my truck and looked out across a big clear cut and saw movement. I got my binoculars and there were 17 hens  and a few jakes I called them from about 600 yards to within 35 yards of my truck. Just to take a closer look. So my day has been productive so far.

Well thought I would give a little update. I heard 7 different birds Saturday morning. Got set up on one let him know where I was as soon as I was sure he was on the ground. I went  quite in him at 740. Well he committed and came in to about 65 yards and started strutting in a big opening. I could see small parts of him every now and then. Well he stayed there strutting from 65-90 yards away. I could hear him drumming the whole time. Well I had the sudden urge to take a leak about 830 but I didn't wanna move. About 1030 I couldn't take it any longer. I turned around got on my knees as soon as I started getting some relief I heard something off to my left side. As I pinched it off and glanced around there he was at about 20 yards. I didn't wanna try to make a move for my gun it was laying kind of behind me and spook him. He started walking off never saw me. I guess you can't win them all.

Quick question for you all. Don't you only figure score on multiple beard birds with the longest beard? Look over my entry and make sure it looks good to y'all.

Thanks for all the compliments!
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: Illini Tom on March 25, 2015, 06:43:30 AM
eric, i thought that looked like 2 beards in the first pic you posted
ya need to update your score!!
on multi-beard birds, you add TOTAL beard length to put in the calculator. thats 15 more points to your score!
great bird. a double beard's a trophy in my book  :gobble: :gobble:
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: turkey buster on March 25, 2015, 07:45:43 AM
double beard turkey!!! That's awesome
Title: General Discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 25, 2015, 10:38:22 AM
Ok so you just add the second beard to the length of the first and put the total length on the calculator. I thought I had read that only the longest beard counted on multi beard birds. I still have him in the freezer I'm gonna try to stick him on the wall.

If you still can add the other beard this will be the score. Can y'all help me find out for sure. I'm PM'ed Shannon asking about it.

Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: turkey buster on March 26, 2015, 06:33:44 AM
Well that's kind of dumb!! A double beard turkey is a double reward. That's talking  from the bird to me.
Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: Illini Tom on March 26, 2015, 06:51:11 AM
well, now i am confused
i didnt read the OG rules where it says longest beard; i just assumed the contest scoring followed the NWTF scoring formula that includes TOTAL length of multi-beard and multi-spur toms
not trying to stir up a controversy, but many birds in the contest last year were scored using total beard length, including a couple over 100 and gooserbat's that was 80+
thats how you get the eye-popping scores is from multiple beards and the occasional tom with more than 2 spurs
even the scoring calculator reads BEARD(S) where you put in beard length
maybe thats a new rule for THIS year  ???

Title: Re: General Discussion
Post by: Illini Tom on March 27, 2015, 09:31:02 AM
dont wanna p off og, but that rule is ridiculous
its like having a big buck contest limited to 8 points. you shoot a 16 pointer but only count the first 8 points
multi beard toms are trophies and should be recognized as such and credited to the hunters fortunate to kill one
oh well, its their contest and if ya wanna play, you gotta play by the rules
Title: General Discussion
Post by: ericjames on March 27, 2015, 09:32:57 AM
I saw a entry on another team that counted the other beards. So I guess no one else saw it in the rules either.

Yeah just to think our peak ain't even here yet. Most of the time I kill 1 or 2 in March. But our birds really get on fire around the end of the first week of April until the end of season witch is the last day of April. We get 5 birds in AL and 3 in MS. So I still have 5 birds to go.

I've been 4 times all season (since March 28th) it's been my worst year for opportunities to be in the woods ever. Luckily I got one opening day but I got a tag in my pocket still that's worse than a $100 bill in it at Bass Pro!

Guys I had one in my lap but just could see him. The sounds of his gobble and drumming was within 30-40 yards. Just thick cover. He was working around it slowly but another hunter came in and started over calling loudly and spooked him off. Aggravations of public birds

Then he looks around at the bird and back at me and says with the most serious face ever. " Wait a minute daddy, I gotta go put my foot on his head". Then he came an sit down.

This is with the 3.5" longbeard 4's @ 38-40 yards. I thought the same thing, I said he is smashed for it being  that distance. When I was cleaning him the thick part of the breast bone was broke in 3 different places. and the pellets kept going but they didnt exit. I have one more vocal bird that I know of, I might leave him and go try to hunt the management area just to see how that goes.

filled 3rd and final tag yesterday
was headed home early after a long morning of tangling and losing against 2 toms. changed my mind after driving out and with a little more than an hour before quittin time at 1, swung by another farm a couple miles away
walked in, sat down, first call on a gooserbat double bit and a tom gobbles a couple hundred yards away
call again, another answer, hit him with a couple cutts, a couple more gobbles and he's comin in! 15 minutes later after maneuvering through a dense jungle of multiflora rose he struts out into the clear just 20 yards away
great way to cap my 25th season of chasin longbeards
2 year old tom had 9 inch beard, inch spurs and weighed just under 20 pounds

Got to hunt 3 days this weekend and no luck.  Had a couple fun encounters with some jakes but no long beards.  Had what sounded like a solid bird headed my way Saturday.  He was cutting me off and closing fast.  Saw a hen RUNNING  :turkey2: down the dirt road headed to the bottom he was in.  She hit the wood line about 150 yards from where he was.  As soon as she hit the woods he quit gobbling except for his goodbye to me gobble as he was headed toward her.  I don't think I'll make it back so my KY season appears to be over.

Well, sorry guys. I went to Nebraska last week with high hopes, didn't work out. These were hard pressured birds, had 4 strutters within 100yds,  that was the best I could do. So the two birds is all I can do this season. Had many birds in range that for one reason or another didn't feel the fire. God was good to me either way.

Actually Hoyt, PSE, Bowtech, Elite, Athens, New Breed, Obsession...and many more uses one of Darton's cam pattens.  That said Rex is  a great guy who is generous with leasing his pattens to the industry.

Well I went to the local and shot so many I couldn't make my mind up. I was stuck between the elite energy, bowtech prodigy, icon, and the carbon knight. I came home not knowing witch one to get. Well I waited 2 weeks and went back and shot them again. Well I decided I my next now would be a bowtech. I cane home and started looking around on eBay and I saw a new knight for $250 cheaper than the shop. So I purchased it and I'm very pleased with this bow.

Who chasing fall turkey

oh, yeah, am looking forward to archery opener oct. 1
got bow and gun permits. gun season is 9 days at end of october. fall turkey not as much fun to me as chasing spring gobblers, but it's still turkey hunting and great to get out in the woods
hope to spend more time bow turkey hunting this year, but after going a few times early in season that usually gets pushed to the backburner by bow deer hunting and fall fishing

got my first bow tom last night on what was planned to be a combo deer/turkey hunt
saw a hen out in the field while slipping into the natural ground blind i made a few years ago. got in undetected, settled in and thought i'd try and call her in. made a hen yelp and nothing. kicked up the volume on an assembly yelp and get a gobble from behind me in the timber!
so i make a gobbler yelp on the gooserbat bacon and hear birds walking in the leaves along with soft clucks and purrs
then a tom steps out into the bean field, follows the timberline toward me and stops less than 10 yards away. the NAP gobbler getter really put the hammer to him. stumbled 10 yards and dropped
had a 7 inch beard and half inch rounded spurs, a 1 1/2 year old bird
i am really starting to like bacon, a very versatile call  :turkey2:

Count me in!!  I didn't get to deer hunt much this fall but my limited time was VERY, VERY productive.  I had shoulder surgery back in August and was unable to bow hunt.  I did get approved for crossbow use but with a bum arm it just wasn't the same.  I had a mule deer hunt booked for November and was well enough to get to go.  Shot a nice one on the third morning.  We saw the buck the first morning and after a long stalk we spooked a different bedded deer and the game was up.  The morning I shot him we spotted him heading to bed about 800 yards out.  There were several does in the field and I guess he got a whiff of love in the air and headed straight back to us.  He popped up out of the creek 350 yards away and the .308 rang true.  Due to scheduling I thought that would end my hunting season.  But, the stars aligned and I was able to get one weekend at my Kentucky lease. On Sunday just a few hours before having to leave a nice 8 was chasing a doe in and out of a very thick cutover.  He stepped out just a little too far and I was able to connect.  Hopefully I'll be as lucky this spring!!  I'm off to a good start as I just found out I'll have 4 day weekends all spring.
