Title: HOMEMADE PERMETHRIN TICK SPRAY NEED HELP
Post by: agturkey on March 06, 2011, 11:41:43 PM
How do you make homemade Permethrine tick spray?  Wanting to spray blinds and gear and tired of paying $9 a bottle.  Can you use the concentrate and make your own?

If so what is the ratio?

1oz 10% Permethrin
15oz Water

That's the ratio I use.  Will give you 16oz of anti-tick goodness.   :you_rock:

This is almost dead on compared to the store brand.  Most store brands are .5% permethrin...Akish79's formula is .625%.  Just saw a 32 oz. bottle of 10% permethrin on Amazon.com for 21.95.  I will be making my own spray from now on....Thanks for starting this thread.  I am sure a lot of people with save a lot of money this year!!!!!

You can soak your outerwear in this as well and let it dry to have the same affect as the commercial clothing treatments.

Yes, works well on crawlers like chiggers and ticks.  Not real effective against fliers like mosquitoes.  Just remember, do not let it contact the skin in wet form.  Never apply directly to skin.  Treat clothing and allow to throughly dry.  Will last at least 2 weeks even if you wash the clothing.  This stuff is technically a nerve agent.  use it stictly as instructed on the clothes treatment version and do not mix it any stronger.  For some strange reason the stuff is highly toxic to cats so do not let your wife's lap warmer come in contact with it or you will be in the dog house.

I may be new to this but I need a ratio of water to 10% to make a .5%

Please show your formula if you have one!

The concentrate is cheap...but I have done lots of reading and calling and it is not labeled to do this.....

Andy's formula is for 10% permethrin and works out to a little over .5%.  It works out to .625%.  If you want .5%, mix 1oz of 10% permethrin with 20 oz of water an you will have .5% permethrin.

.1/20 = .005  this is the formula.

FYI: Took this formula off another site:

for 0.50% solution - 5 1/2 ounces of Permethrin to 1 Gallon of Water.

Before you run out and buy the first 10% permethrin you find, realize that many agricultural permethrin concentrates are oil based and not water based like Permanone.  Need to look around and find a water based solution for use on clothing.

Got a couple dumb questions. One, I've looked on the bottle of the stuff I bought and I can't see where it says if it's petroleum based or not, so how do I tell? Two, what's the harm if it is as long as it dries before use?
Title: Re: HOMEMADE PERMETHRIN TICK SPRAY NEED HELP
Post by: Skeeterbait on March 11, 2011, 11:48:22 PM
I called the manufacturer of Dur-Vet Permethrin 10 and spoke with there sales person.  He informed me that many agricultural products are oil based to aid sticking.  Use on clothing would result in stained clothing and long drying time and wasn't recommended.  Also some agricultural products also contain Piperonyl Butoxide(PBO) which is toxic.

I then purchased DurationTM Permethrin 10% Concentrate from Amazon which claims to be the only EPA registered permethrin 10% concentrate approved for use on clothing.  It is intended for use as a soak but I deluted it to .5% and use it as a spray like Sawyers.  It is $30 for 8 oz.  Mixed 20 to 1 it will make 168 oz of .5% spray or equal to 7 of the 24 oz bottles of Sawyers. Thats $30 vs $90.

I bought a Quart from Revival Animal Health Online. I don't know if it is water or oil based but it has not hurt or stained my clothes.

I was worried that this home made spray would not protect like the store bought stuff but it does. I spray everything the night before as I want it well dried before it touches my skin.
I find it works very well on skeeters too but of course they will still bite unprotected skin.

I have been experimenting with reapplying it to my Thermacell pads too but it is too early to know for sure how well it works. It seemed to be fine the few times I used it last deer season but this spring will be a better test.
(I refill the butane cartridges also. I am cheap)

I went behind the house to listen this afternoon and when I got back had a small tic on my waist. First one this yr and real early. Saw my first snake of the yr. also. Heard about 5 gobblers sound off at 6:00pm. Southern Illinois.

Going to go to town and see if Rural King has the water base...if not will order some from Amazon. The ticks were terrible around here last yr. I know I picked close to 100 off me. If I don't have lime disease I guess I can't get it.

Too many people use  insect repellents like h2o,but scientist think  it's likely  that bug spray's are connected to Parkinson's disease and other brain related diseases.I use the stuff made from eucalyptus  leaves and it works.

Make sure you read the labels folks.... I would hate to hear of someone poisoning themselves.

Is pyrethrin the same thing as permethrin?

Best I understand, pyrethrin is natuarally occuring compounds in plants like  chrysanthemums that naturally repel insects, but they biodegrade and become inert when exposed to sunlight.  Permethrin is a synthetic compound similar to pyrethrin.

From Wikipedia:

The pyrethrins are a pair of natural organic compounds that have potent insecticidal activity. Pyrethrin I and pyrethrin II are structurally related esters with a cyclopropane core, (+)-trans-chrysanthemic acid in the case of pyrethrin I.[1][2] They differ by the oxidation state of one carbon. They are viscous liquids that oxidize to become inactivated. They are non-persistent, being biodegradable, and break down on exposure to light or oxygen. The chemical structure of pyrethrins is the basis for a variety of synthetic insecticides called pyrethroids such as bifenthrin, permethrin, and cypermethrin.

The only thing we have found so far that is approved for use on your personal clothing other than the premixed ready to use stuff is the link in the post above yours.  It is a 10% concentrate called DurationTM that is water based and contains no additional chemicals.  You need to bring it down to a .5% solution if you want to use it as a spray on your clothing.  To do this, mix 1 ounce of the concentrate with 20 ounces of water.

I have used the oil based agricultural product on pine trees around my home to eradicate pine beetles.  Soak the bark with a pump up sprayer as high as you can reach and it works well.  Probably as good as anything you can buy since they took lindane off the market.

hoyt, A little farther down on the page you selected, it says:

Product Features

    * For use on clothing, tents or netting.
    * Safe to use on natural or synthetic fibers.
    * Offers up to 2 weeks of protection and last through two launderings.
    * Comes in an 8oz. Trigger Spray which treats: 2 sets of clothing & 1 additional garment. (1 set of clothing = 1 long sleeved shirt, 1 pair of pants and 1 pair of socks).
    * Safe for childrens clothing.

(Whether store bought spray or home made solution, I have found a light mist on the clothing works fine)

Doesn't say if it's okay to use on clothing..I may call and ask. I got to get something like it for my dog. The Advantix didn't faze the tics on him last yr. and looks like they are going to be as bad or worse this yr.

Went and listened yesterday..didn't hear but one and was so far off I couldn't tell which direction.

Got home and so far picked two more tics off. These things are real small not as big as a BB..but not seed tics and you know you got one cause they itch bad and leave an itchy bump that turns into a little open sore by the time I get through clawing it with my fingernails.

DurationTM Permethrin 10% Concentrate on the way.

One item to note about the DurathonTM is that it does say on the box that it contains petroleum distilates.  I just received mine in the mail today, and read the box.  It still carries the EPA rating for use on Clothing and the like, so I think its still good for our intended purpose.

This has been a very informative thread...I was in the agricultural chemical business for 11 years beginning in 1979...that is when the first synthetic pyrethroids came into use in US.  They are designed to simulate the action of natural pyrethrin.  The big advantage synthetic pyrethroids , like permethrin, have is their very, very  low toxicity to warm blooded animals...this was a big advantage over older insecticides that were mostly organo phospates which are highly toxic to humans.  I had not thought of using permethrin for ticks on my hunting clothes but it makes perfect sense.

This has been discussed many times and finally made a "sticky" on our Pa. Hunting forum.
The Lawn and Garden concentrates are what you want to use because they are water based and made to be diluted with water.
Some guys want to go with the "more is better" routine, but you have to remember you are dealing with a poison, and a recommended dosage was established.  It works.  I've been using it for the past 3 years.  I went from picking off hundreds of ticks, with dozens embedded.....to zero.  Absolutely zero for the past 3 years.  You can watch them crawl up your pant legs, and by the time the reach your thigh, they are dead.

I used the 1oz/15oz ratio mix on my clothes in Pa this Spring, and can vouch for it's effectiveness. I hunted on one day in particular with my Uncle, who pulled 42 ticks off of his clothes by days end. I was with him at every point of the day and followed the same trails, etc. and did not even have one tick so much as land on me and fall off. They avoided me like a studio executive would Charlie Sheen

The bottle I bought is $6 at Tractor Supply Co. :z-winnersmiley:

Most any farm and feed store will have it. $20 or les for a quart tip and pour bottle. Most have a label that will give % mixing instructions. Dont think a little is good and more is better. This stuff is still very toxic.

John

Actually, permethrin is harmless to humans and canines as long as you don't drink it...it is DEADLY to cats though!  If you ever had or know anyone who's ever hade scabies, then you are familar with the treament.  It is a 5%+ permethrin based cream that covers the patient FROM HEAD TO FOOT and you leave it one for what ever the prescribed length of time is as determined by the Dr.  I am a nurse and have done these treatments before.  The permethrin is actually absorbed into the skin to kill the scabies mites burrowing under the skin layers and on dogs (by using the the flea drops) it is absorbed into the skin to be lethal to any fleas that bite the dog.  it is metabolised in the body easilly and in fact can keep you flea free just like the dog for a while!   :TooFunny:  You do not however want to ingest it as it can be harmfull then.

NOT GOOD!

The best way to treat your clothes is to soak them thoroughly in the diluted solution, lightly squeeze them out and then lay them out flat on a sheet of plastic in a breezy, shady area. Wear rubber gloves for this. Check on them once in a while and flip them over occasionally to let the other side dry. It will take a while longer to thoroughly dry out, so do this a few days before you need to wear them. This approach is preferable to hanging them up on something. Hanging your clothes will cause the solution to run down to the bottom of your clothes, leaving the upper most areas (shoulders, waist) with insufficient coverage.

Just a small tip to help.

what exactly does it do to skin

I don't know what it does specifically to human skin, but all warnings associated with it say that Permethrin is intended to only be used as a clothing treatment, and should not be applied directly to skin. It is generally considered to be completely harmless to people once it has dried. Tests have shown that it will kill ticks that have crawled across as little as 10" of treated clothing.

The U.S. Army recommends clothing treated in Permethrin and the use of 30% Deet on exposed skin as complete protection for soldiers in insect infested areas.

Questions about application.

1)  Do you spray it on the inside of your pants legs, or just on the outside.  Ditto for shirts and sleeves.

2)  Do you need to spray it on/in socks, and under shorts/shirts?

3)  Inside your hat?

Thanks.

Outside.  I usually spray all my outerwear with enough solution to moderately soak everything.  Then hang to dry and you're uasually good for a week to 2 weeks depending on the wether and use.

Great info to a itchy problem.  One other idea I plan to use is to get a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 piece of camo cloth and
soak it.  (use whatever product you feel safe with)  Let it dry, roll it up and stuff in hunting vest and throe it on the ground where you sit.  When you need to move take it with you.  Re-apply solution as need.
Another use is to place it over a poison ivy patch to prevent contact.  Good luck and be safe..

Went to local agriclture store today and came away confused.  I have read in this thread that some are using the Martin's brand.  I checked it out and it states in fine print that it is made from petroleum distallants.  In fact, they had three different brands and all have said the same.  Is this stuff safe?

So is it safe to us products with the following note on the label?  Even the Martin's that claims to be water based has this.

**contains petroleum distillates

Every brand I have seen has this on it.  Martin's, Rural King brand

I mixed up on Prozap Insectrin X tonight and sprayed down my camo.  The label said it contained petroleum distillates, but I don't worry about it staining camo.  The smell, on the other hand....GOOD GAWD!!!  I think the smell alone will keep the bugs away!  I'm glad I have a week for it to air out before I have to wear it.   :D

I know this thread is about Permethin but if you want to try something that is no toxic to humans and works great on ticks, and red bugs try Listerine. You can get a big bottle of the plain ole brown Listerine for cheap at any of the dollar stores. Mix it with water or put it in a spray bottle by itself. I use it all the time and never have ticks or red bugs. It doesn't have that bad a smell either. Just a thought

I just checked with my local farm supply store and they sell Permethrin-10 by Gordon, but that is oil based and to be used on farm animals, not clothing.  Just a heads up as Skeeterbait mentioned.  Looks like the water-based is used more for mosquito control and can be purchased from pest control companies, but the water based is pricey, in comparison.  Still cheaper to do it yourself though.

Cutter Bugfree Backyard can  be found at Lowes, Home Depot, ACE, etc and usually contains 2.5% permethrine in a water based solution. Mix this 4:1 with water to yield a .5% solution used to spray on clothing.
I've seen some of the product on the same display that contained Biefferine....you do not want that stuff so make sure to read the labels.

Others I've found are Ortho Total Kill, ACE brand permethrine, and Bonide brand. The bonide has the least offensive smell of all of them, but they all air dry to nearly odorless, and all have been highly effective at killing and repelling ticks and mosquitoes.

The concentration is not nearly as important as some want you to believe. For instance 1 squirt of 10% is going to apply the same amount of permethrine as 10 squirts of 1%. It's all relative to the amount you apply.

I spray the .5% concentrate directly on my two labs once a month. It is the same ingredient as Frontline Flea and Tick at a much cheaper price. My dogs have not had a single tick in 3 years....they used to be covered in them with frontline, and one had Lyme's Disease.

I bought the Duration 10% concentrate from Amazon last year. It says right on the box that it contain petroleum distillates. It says to mix the soultion, use 1/2 oz. of concentrate with 18oz. of water. They send a couple of big bags and a couple pair of plastic gloves in the box. It gives instructions for doing the soak method, but you could always just mix and spray it on the cloths. I do both...soak the pants and shirts. Then spray my jacket sleeves, collar & waist for a little extra protection.

Most Farm Co-Op's have it as well as Tractor Supply or Rural King. It comes in 10% concentration, whereas Sawyers and other commercial brands for hunters is 0.5%. One ounce of 10% concentration permethrin to 20 ounces of water gets you back down to 0.5% and you save a lot of money.

Before you run out and buy the first 10% permethrin you find, realize that many agricultural permethrin concentrates are oil based and not water based like Permanone.  Need to look around and find a water based solution for use on clothing.

Why is that Skeeter? Are you looking out for health or clothing by not liking the petrol based concentrate? Just curious. I'm not really concerned about my camo clothes but if it is lots worse health-wise that might be a consideration.

I been using permethrin-10 for years for many different applications. First learned to use it for thermacell pads. Mix 6 parts water to 1 part permethrin with few drops of blue food color. 10 to 14 drops per pad then seal up air tight in tiny ziplock bags until use. Saves a lot money if you hunt with thermacells as much as I do. I also spray my dogs down monthly per instructions on bottle. Works for chicken mites as well. Also spay the yard regular through summer. This is a good thread and I have learned so much now for clothing application. Thanks

This is water based, no petroleum distillates, 90% inert ingredients.  Mix with water 19 to 1 for .05%, 15 to 1 for .0625%.  For $20 you can make 5 gallons of treatment, compare that to Sawyers, which would cost hundreds of dollars for that amount.

"Worked for our State Mosquito Control Section for years. We used the commercially purchased cans of Permanone for spraying our clothes while working outside in tick infested areas. I do not remember the label info with dilution amount.
I purchase for personal use the 10% concentrate. I believe that is the highest over-the-counter percentage available without a license. Any good farm supply business should have gallon or quart size units. The directions give a multitude of dilutions for animal dips.....area sprays.....indoor and outdoor locations.
For my clothes....I pick the dilution for animals...such as the family dog. If you are worried that this would be too strong....cut it in half....and try it for effectiveness.

NEVER EVER WEAR WET CLOTHING.....ALWAYS ALLOW TO DRY COMPLETELY BEFORE USING.

Wear in test situations for short then progressively longer times. If you sense any "change" in how you feel....remove immediately. How I respond to wearing treated clothing MAY NOT be how you respond.
I use the dilutions listed for animal enclosure areas, etc., for inside and outside of my blinds. Read the directions and use your head when deciding what dilution scenario will work for you...."

After paying $6-$7 for a spray can of Permanon at Walmart, I checked the ingredients and then went to my local farm supply store where, for $6, I purchased a small squeeze bottle of 10% permethrin made by Durvet. In an empty milk jug, I mixed 1.5 oz. of the 10% permethrin in a gallon of water, shook it up, and then poured it into my garden sprayer. After hanging two complete hunting outfits on the clothes line piece by piece, including camo overalls, camo shirt, camo jacket, camo leafy top/bottom, camo gloves, camo hat, and dark hunting socks, I sprayed them heavily with the mixture, making sure that anything that the ticks would come in contact with had been sprayed.  Generally, I wash the clothes at least once before the two week time-to-reapply comes along and find no loss of effectiveness of the sprayed clothing after washing. I did this for 3-4 years before posting the above online only to learn from others that this would not repel ticks since it would not stick to my clothing. Funny thing was, I had not picked up a tick during the spring turkey season or summer/fall squirrel season after I started using my homemade spray, all of this covering around 30+ trips to the woods annually. So...I just kept on using it and here we are some 7-8 years after I started using it and I plan to use it again this year...even though it's not supposed to work!

Woops!! I forgot to add that after spraying my clothes, I let them hang outside until completely dry or, if it looks like rain, I move them to the garage until good and dry. When wet, the spray puts off an irritating odor that is best kept out of the house. Again, make sure that the permethrin sprayed clothing is definitely dry before using. That's why I typically spray them a minimum of two days before I need them.

It's Wednesday morning and I just came in from spraying my outer camo turkey hunting clothes with a mixture of 1 1/2 oz. of permetherin in one gallon of water. I sprayed three sets of camo overalls, one camo insulated coverall, two camo shirts, two sets of camo gloves, a camo hat, camo top and bottom of leafy outfit, and the tops of two pairs of socks. I still have spray left over in the garden sprayer and will use that in two weeks to re-treat all of my outer turkey outfits. It opens in Southern Illinois on Monday, April 6th. I recently broke my ankle and will be hobbling on a walker/crutches with my faithful wife doing the decoys/gun/seat carrying duties. As I explained to her, remember at our wedding there was the "...for better or worse..." clause? Well, we've had 50 years of "better" and now it's time for a little "worse"! This should be interesting!

Will it work on chiggers also?

I treated the outside of my cats fabric collar w/this stuff using a q-tip. I let it dry over nite and it seems to work. Did this awhile ago before I read this. He's still alive, dosn't seem to mind it and has had no ticks....yet. There is a new collar out called Seresto treated w/flumethrin which is supposed to be great, cost $40.00 good for 8 mo.

The bottom line is that if you hunt during tick season, then you must take some action to repel or kill them. Ticks carry too many long-lasting debilitating diseases to be ignored. Now that Southern Illinois has the tiny deer ticks/turkey mites as well as the much larger "dog" ticks, one can't count on feeling them crawl on your skin as a way of detecting their presence. Pick your method of chemical tick control, but do something before you head to the woods or field whether it's to hunt, look for mushrooms, or ride your four-wheeler through the weeds. Most of us know someone who has a tick related disease, suffers from it daily, and it has literally changed their life for the worse. Do not underestimate the need for tick protection before heading for the outdoors!

Here it is one year after I broke my ankle in March, 2015. Last season in early April, I traversed a picked soy bean field via my walker on the first morning of the Southern Illinois opening season with my wife carrying the decoys and my shotgun, took a gobbler that morning, then we toted all the gear and turkey back to the pickup. It seemed like it was uphill both ways! I managed to get another tom three weeks later after I had graduated from the walker to a boot which was sandwiched into a modified blue-jean leg with a black garbage bag duct taped around it. It's now only four weeks until the 2016 Southern Illinois opener and I'll soon be digging out my mouth calls, the same ones that I've successfully used for the past eight years to take three toms annually with the exception of a couple of years where I only got two. Like always, I rarely set up where they are gobblin' but instead go to where they are heading after fly down to breed, usually having birds on me within a couple of hours after daylight. By using a gobble tube to give the impression of an intruder along with aggressive hen yelps to intimidate the boss hen which sometimes drags in a tom, I've been able to bring in gobblers on a consistent basis.  While I usually use my Remington 870 12 gauge with the Undertaker choke tube, I've also been successful with my 20 gauge flintlock fusil and 1889 Remington hammer 12 gauge double.

I know this is an old thread but I think it is very important.  The incidence of tick borne diseases (RMSF, Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, etc) is increasing in the US.  I know we are diagnosing more cases every year in our ED.  Unfortunately, these diseases can cause serious illness and even death if not treated quickly.  As always, prevention is better than treatment.  I have found the Permethrin based clothing spray to be incredibly effective in preventing tick attachment.  Lots of products out there but I have attached the one that I have used and like.  Have fun out there but be safe.

If there is a chance it will freeze I would definitely take it inside.
Okay, I will grab it when I get home, barn is locked right now and I do not have the key.

In the event that your clothes/skin get wet, such as it beginning to rain, will the permethrin absorb into your skin and cause any reactions?

I have sensitive skin and am a profuse sweater, I have no problems no matter how badly I sweat.

Great thread. Go through at least 1 and half bottles every year. I have dedicated turkey cloths for my sons and I, and on the first two rain free days in April I spray down our outer layer of turkey camo and hats. Prior to heading out I spray 90% Deet DWO on my pants and shirts cuffs, gloves, hats and face masks, pants waist, and shirt bottoms and collars.

Last year while scouting new public land in west central IN on a walk while wearing non treated street cloths from my truck into some very thick brush and back to the truck, a total of less than 200 yards I spotted a tic on my arm. I then found no less than 11 more tics on me, and missed three more that ended up burrowing in and having to be removed once I was home.

While doing stand by at a public land area in my home state with 9 other hunters found out in the last three years four of them had contracted Lyme's disease, not the odds I like to hear.

I buy my permethrin concentrate at Tractor Supply. It's for farm animals, runs about $8 a contailer and has a premeasured 1 oz. section on top of the bottle. Mix it 1 oz. solution to 12-15 oz of water and you are good to go.

I'm new to this forum and found this extremely helpful. I've been buying the commercially premixed version for way too many years.  The only question I have is I've read some reviews on other sites that some of the permethrin gives off a kerosene like smell. Which brands dry scent free? Thank You!

I use Martins and premix as advertised.  I hang EVERYTHING, on a clothesline and soak it, at the start of every season.  I notice an odor when I first apply it but the odor dissipates after drying and hanging on the clothesline for a few hours.  Does it matter to turkeys, not in the least.  If you are using it in the fall for deer hunting, I'll bet they can smell the odor with the right wind.  With a turkey's eyesight and hearing as keen as it is, if they could smell like a deer we would be in BIG trouble!

I was going to use it for both deer and turkey seasons. I'll definitely use the martins like you suggest but see how it goes for the deer season. As for a turkeys sense of smell, your so right they'd be unkillable! Thank You!

Been using the Duration for years with great success.
https://www.travelerssupply.com/Duration-10-Concentrate-Permethrin-treatment-p/dr10con.htm (https://www.travelerssupply.com/Duration-10-Concentrate-Permethrin-treatment-p/dr10con.htm)

A buddy of mine told me that he got 30+ ticks on him just walking to check his wellhead and didn't want to have to slather up in insect repellant just to walk 20 yards through weeds & brush.  I hooked him up with Duration, which he applied that day. The day after (once it dried) he walked through the weeds to his wellhead as a test.  He called to tell me that the only tick he found on him was dead one that was caught where the bottom of his pants made a cuff.  That stuff works like magic.

Word of advice, add some Picaridin cream (or something) in conjunction with permethrin spray.

Had a tick embedded in my eyelid the other day & had to have a doc get it out. Got prescribed a zpak & ointment.

The picaridin cream is good for the face & around the eyes & ears.

Just cause all your stuff is covered in permethrin, consider the areas that aren't & exposed. They can still get to ya sitting against a tree or walking through brush.

A first for me. Lesson learned. I hate all those suckers.

2 springs ago my hair was pretty long. By the time the end of the season rolled around and the ticks became more active I noticed the ticks were by passing my permethrin soaked clothing by getting in my hair from off the set up tree. Needless to say last spring I entered season with a new haircut!

Didn't want to read through all the threads, but the ones I did I never saw a true formula. Usually the concentrates have directions for mixing, but here's a formula.

Desired amount of spray = 16 oz
desired concentrate of  permethrin=  10%
active ingredient of concentrate = 70% (this is just an example, look at your active ingredient level on your bottle)

16 (desired amount of mixed spray)  multiplied by .10 ( desired concentration of permethrin) divided by .70 (% active ingredient of concentrate) = 2.28 oz of concentrate needed

enter like this :  16x.10/.70 =2.285

add the 2.28 oz to the empty container and then fill with distilled water up to 16 oz. This is the proper way to make solutions.
Done it for 30 years in the lab. Like others said be sure it is water soluble.

Before you run out and buy the first 10% permethrin you find, realize that many agricultural permethrin concentrates are oil based and not water based like Permanone.  Need to look around and fine a water based solution for use on clothing.

Great heads-up on that.
^^^^^^ What they said. I use a 13% permethrin
19 oz of water to 1 oz of permethrin. Not sure what the percentage is on that but it works. I spay my clothes down outside let them dry and your good to go. Also keep a bottle in the truck and spray from the knees down when I go hunting. I hunt the mountains, ticks are thick and knock on wood I never get one on me.

I have had a very hard time finding water based, never have as a matter of fact. I found some online the other day but they won't ship it to NY they will ship the petroleum based to NY Go figure.
