Title: Rem 870SM 24in bbl Hevi-Shot Speed Ball
Post by: TrophyTracker on July 01, 2012, 12:07:32 AM
I know this is a turkey pattern thread, but there is nowhere else to put this. I have posted up info on the load elsewhere, and know that some may be interested.

Hevi-Shot Speed Ball 3in #5shot Waterfowl load

12in circle @ 40yds

Rem 870SM 24in bbl
Hevi Shot ER choke tube

This stuff is FAST.  The recoil is not out of this world.

Did you chrono it?

Nice! But #5's for waterfowl? I thought you'd be shooting something alittle larger?

Thanks!

This is a new offering on the plate. I generally go with the smaller shot in the Early Teal/Woody season we have here. #4's were my choice up until this season, where I will be using these and the new #6 Hevi-Metal 3in load for that. I will go with #3's as the Reg season gets under way

looks like a duck would not have a chance with that , if it could do the job at 40 with the knockdown - and I think it can ? not sure

With the cost of ammo climbing I can predict that there are going to be folks looking closer at paper patterning of waterfowl loads in the future

Looks like a killer. I've been using the Hevi Metal the past two duck seasons and may give this stuff a try this year.

I'm def not leaving Hevi-Metal out of the rotation. I think that I will run the Speed Ball later in the season when I'm dealing with a lot of divers. In the thick stuff  of the early season, where the action is close and kung-fu crazy, I plan to be using the HM loads for sure.

From a duck hunting standpoint a 12" pattern than tight at 40 yds looks like a clean miss or potted meat to me. I guess you could just hit those teal in the head and neck as they fly by .  ??? ::)

If the speed ball can do that to steel and HM or HS at 40 yds it looks like it could be a new ball game for turkey loads using it with HS to have lower recoil and better pellet patterns with fewer shot.

I could see this in the 20s and 2 3/4 12s for sure.

You may be on to something there with some of that. The future will be interesting for sure.
This pattern was with a .699 ER Hevi tube. I was able to open it up with the Mid Range .711 tube. I only had a handful of these loads to test due to them have not even been released at the time yet, so my testing had to be concentrated on different areas. I can't wait to get back to the board with more shells to get really experimental with.
