Title: Any Gobble tube users?
Post by: turkeytromp on February 26, 2011, 05:41:01 PM
Does anyone use a gobble tube to locate? I am trying to decide on buying one for this season and here is why...Last season most of the gobblers would not answer a owl or crow locater call here in the southern ohio area, I don't know if it's because other hunters are using them so much or just the hunting pressure itself. But I didn't have very much luck with them.

Now I killed a nice tom the second morning of the season last year after trying both the owl and crow locators an hour after daybreak with no responses,so I was walking along this high ridge when a turkey gobbled a couple hundred yards away and then it was like a serenade gobblers were firing off in 4 other different locations only after 1 tom gobbled. So I thought to myself I may need a good sounding gobble tube locator for this year??
What is everyones opinion on using these gobble locators and have you had any luck using them?? And if yes what one do you guys recommend?

Them seem kinda bulky to me try using a tube call or just use a double sided short box odds are you'll have one of the two. :anim_25:

I'd try a coyote, woodpecker, goose or duck call first, but I have located with a shaker. I've called in Longbeards with shakers before. When they are not coming to hen calls, give it a shot. It's better than sitting there wasting time. Try it on the heavy hunted ground. I've called them on heavy hunted public hunting with the shaker (watch your back).

I have whistled a "Rain Crow" (dove) with my hands. I have that work when nothing else will. I do gobble to locate sometimes but I use a mouth call to do so. I have noticed that if I elongate the shrill on the end of an owl sequence. I mean 2 times longer than normal, It is somewhat similar to a gobble. Try that, It works for me and won't draw a hunter to me. It actually lets them know you are there. I suggest not to use a gobbler tube on Public Ground.

well i dont like them cus one there bulky and 2 i dont think there loud enough at all i have primos one and i dont like it an owl call works the best for me u can just like yell in a deep low voice and theyll gobble right back but only do it inthe morning when there roosted or when there in there roost at dusk. plus sometimes gobling scares away young toms and jakes if you care about the size wich i personally dont. :fud:

I use an H.S.Strut shaker and it sounds like a jake. I have used it a few times on private land when on foot and a few times driving along ridges in public land before the season starts, just to gather info for opening morning. I don't think I'd use it while hunting though. I called in a hunter a long time ago using a double sided box call, so I'm a little leery about gobble calls.

i dont have a gobble call cuz its easy enough to do it with a box call or diaphram... no need. besides, around here when you give a owl hoot, any bird near you gobbles, they just are hard to hunt after that  :fud: :gobble:

I know it's not good to do but I used the Haint to call a bird in for my buddy on public land. We had the bird gobbling on the roost lost it to hens. Got it gobbling again around 10 only to have it shut up again. Got back to the truck at 11:45 decided to get the haint out for laughs and had him hammer back 200 yards away. Setup on him and used nothing but the haint and some purs and he came running into the gun. Shot him 8 minutes till noon.

save your money and buy a good quality tube call.  I'd rather have a call that could gobble AND make other turkey sounds.  most of the guys I've talked to could never run the Haint like it was supposed to be done.  I tried for a week and couldn't get it right.

Just use a good quality tube call I use a Tower of Power made by close calls it has amazing volume for reaching out to distant birds plus i can use it to make other turkey sounds as stated in an earlier post. Midwest turkey supply has a good selection of tube calls. As for the haint i bought the poly and walnut cant get either to sound as good as a tube call.
