Title: 12 Gauge Low brass?
Post by: timberjack86 on March 14, 2012, 09:34:08 PM
My little woman cant handel the recoil of a high brass shell. Do you think low brass 6's will cleanly kill a gobbler at 30 yards? I am shooting a 835 with a 24 inch barrel. Thanks.

i wouldnt shoot past 20 yards with low brass 6. your best bet is to have her shoot the low brass when practicing. then when you load the gun to hunt slip a 2 3/4 in it. she wont notice the kick when shooting a turkey. i did this to a gf i had and she killed a bird with a 3.5 federal. never knew i did it til i told her. her stats. 130 pounds and 4'11" tall

I would agree with snapper and just slip a high brass 2 3/4 #6 in there when you get to your hunting spot and she will never know the difference.

If I were heading that route I would go with something like a Rio 3-3/4, 1-1/4, #7.5. That load is moving at 1330 and would put a bird on his tail at 30 yds with the right choke. Recoil won't be too bad. I shoot doves with 'em. :OGturkeyhead:

I agree with Spuriosity, 2-3/4" 7.5 will get er done.

I'm getting 150s-160s at 30yds in the 10" with 7/8oz of NP #7s at 1120fps. 6s averaged 113.  Those are handloads, so not much help in your situation.

OTOH, I fired a 2-3/4" 1-1/8oz #7.5 Kent dove load at paper a couple years back with one of my turkey rigs for the heck of it. At 30yds it ate up the target, real nice and even pattern with way more than enough in the kill zone to seal the deal.

I'd suggest to buy a box of  1-1/8oz 7.5s and see what she'll do.

That'll get it done any day of the week.

I forgot I had a handloaded 1 1/8 of 7 1/2 in my turkey gun one fall when some birds started calling back, I sat down and started calling a small flock came running in togeather, I picked a jake out at about 30 yds and dropped him when I got to him I heard a bird flopping another 10 yds out and he was down too. 2 for the price of one and it was legal in NY state.

7.5's will get the job done at 30yds all day long
years ago I hunted with the old Federal 3" 2oz #7-1/2 load
talking about something that would put a bird down ;)
