Title: Today was a GOOD DAY to pattern the 835 and some hevi straight 7s!
Post by: mightyjoeyoung on March 11, 2012, 07:51:14 PM
64 degrees, moderate winds, sunny and...NO FRIGGIN RAIN for a change!!  Woo hoo!  Shot some 3.5/2.25/#7 hevi shot through the new TruGlo Bone Collector choke on the 835.  Today I shot the BEST pattern I have EVER put on paper!!  355 in the 10" with a really nice, even 20".  Range finder bounced between 39 and 40 yards so let's say it was 39... :toothy12:

That's an awesome pattern! That is the first pattern i've seen shot through a Bone Collector choke. Looks like you've found a winning combo.  :icon_thumright:

And I should be receiving my Colonial Arms (StarDot) in a couple days too!  Can't wait to see how she does through that too!  I would honestly like a little more open pattern, even though I'm pretty sure there's a decapitation in the making if I get a bird inside 20 yards this spring with the BC choke and some straight 7s this spring!!

You are da man!

I guess that may be the next big choke even if they are made in China.  I figured I would say that before someone else did.   :z-winnersmiley:

Yeah, it's actually hanging on the garage wall now!   :TooFunny:  The GF just doesn't understand...  Anyways, I got the Colonial Arms super full today in the mail.  Just like you said, it looks like virtualy every StarDot I've ever seen.   Lets hope she shoots like one too.  I never should have gotten rid of it when I sold my second 835.  Heck!...never shoulda sold the darn gun!  It was the NWTF gun with the Medalion and everything in the Realtree Extra Brown pattern.   Stupid, stupid, stupid...

Bushnell Trophy multi-reticle set on the circle/dot plex.  If the turkey is bigger than the circle, he's in range.  I don't EVER change that as it has a tendancy to shift poi a bit high/low, so when I got her sighted in, she got a drop of super glue on the dial.  Inside 20 she had decapitated 2 birds in the last 15 years.  One at 12 yards and the other at about 15 or so that only had a couple little tendons holding the head on.  Quite a few others looked like someone did a peel out on their heads with their car.  :OGturkeyhead: If I can ever find the pics I'll post them up but I fear they got thrown out by the ex GF in a fit of rage...probably over me going hunting.   :z-dizzy:

That is what I am thinking.. Great pattern!

I have been thinking of trying out one of those chokes in the SBEII. I just didn't want to buy it because of the name on the choke. I have used a few products endorsed buy them and wasn't happy.

It might have the "Bone Collector" logo on it (which I can't stand either btw) but believe me, it's all TroGlo!  I was a bit hesitant to try one at first as well.  Once I got a good look at it and going off my past experience with TruGlo and all the other brands and styles of chokes I have used in the past 30 years, it just made sense to try it out.  Glad I did too as it will probably take the #1 spot on my dedicated turkey 835 if the C.A. I got doesn't shoot as well.

I use the Bushnell Trpohy multi-reticle red dot mounted on a weaver base.  I have the reticle "locked" on the circle/dot plex with a drop of crazy glue, but even without the sight, the gun, in fact all three of my 835's have always hit poi to poa or very, very close.  I did have this particular gun "tweeked" just a teenie tiny bit.  The barrel is mirror pollished right down to the chamber and was chrome plated by a local company here near me, the trigger was worked to right about 3 pounds and breaks like glass.  Wether or not the chrome plating helps I'm not sure but it sure seems to get clean and stay clean better than my other two 835's with barrels that are highly pollished as well.   Point of fact, this gun has only ever missed one bird in over 60 plus shots taken on live birds and that was the old man last year as I lent him ole' "Geane Tripplehorn" as I have named her because I was carrying my "little Monster" 20 I did up this past spring.  He had a big gobbler strutting at 30 yards and missed him clean...killed the crap outta the 4" maple sapling that was maybe 5 or 6 yards from the end of the muzzle though.  He tried to blame it on the gun and shell combo I told him to use (3" hevi stright 6"s through the BC choke) but when I looked where he said the bird was standing I walked over and pushed the sapling over with one finger and said, "Well Here's yer problem"!!!  He has taken more turkeys than most guys have ever seen in their lifetimes so you understand the severe, and almost constant ribbing he got for such a blunder!  Still jab him in the ribs over that every now and then...

The Bone Collector Choke "SmackDown" is their newest choke.  None of their previous models carry the logo.  I could do without the fact that they associated themselves with those tools the bone collectors, but I have to admit, they hit a home run with this choke!

It shot really well with every load I put through it actually!  Straight 6's, Mag Blends, Fed Heavy Weight 7's, Win Ext. Rng. 6's and Win. and Fed. PB 6's.  I got 159 in the 10" with the older Federal Premium Copper Plated 6's at 40 yards too if that tells you anything.  It even shot the Hevi Shot 4's fairly well...well enough that I wouldn't wana be a turkey inside between the optimal pattern and the killing range of those pellets that's for sure!  (I will not say the range as I respect the site owners' wishes on ethical ranges and I agree, but let's just say if I had to I could take a serious poke at a bird!  ;) )   It may just be I found the perfect combo for this gun, but to shoot literally EVERY load I put through it?  Just can't be a coincidence imo...

I'm with Joe.  My 835 LOVES the 7's with a Pure Gold choke.  300 plus (never really counted total numbers)  cleaned and polished the barrel and added a Bushnell Red dot.  The 7's HAMMER birds.
