Title: Trumpet / Lip Stop
Post by: Greg Massey on February 23, 2023, 07:36:45 PM
For the ones who have been using and running trumpets for years have you ever had to try and replace any of the different style lip stops? Do you do anything to treat them especially the cork style?  I know from the ones i have the lip stop varies in sizes and shapes ...  EVA foam etc...

I like cork about the diameter if a wine cork, I prefer a domed top for a better lip seal.
if the hole ever enlarges in cork where it gets loose I have cut a tiny piece of rubberband and poked it up in the hole for extra friction.

never treated rubber ones but have some that have dried and gotten splits in them over time.

I've made them out of everything, but have settled on using wine cork. I like the feel and the tradition of cork. I seal them with Minwax polyurethane.

I've made them out of cork or rubber stoppers. You can buy corks or rubber stoppers at most any hardware store. I cut the head off from a wood screw, drill a hole in the stopper and turn it onto the screw, chuck it in the drill press and form it with coarse sandpaper. Then drill the stop out to fit the mouthpiece. You can experiment with all kinds of shapes to suit the style you like best.
I prefer cork and I finish mine with polyurethane except where my lips come in contact with the stop.

Renaissance wax will work as a good preservative to help the rubber not crack or cork to dry rot as well for the entire body of the trumpet.

Great topic.  Learned some stuff.  The EVA foam worries me a little.
