Title: Help my yelp
Post by: Terry on February 12, 2023, 07:51:02 AM
What file do you like better? First(green)has more front, second(orange) has less front but more rasp. Also, what can I improve on?

#1, but nothing wrong with #2 either, sounds great....you don't need any help  ;D

You don't need my help, fine calling. My only impression is they were not recorded in the same location, probably wrong. That's what makes a good caller, constantly working on being better. I like what I call a flat note raspy hen sound. But they can also be 'cleaner' and sometimes even musical. The trick is to have both to throw at them.

As we spoke about, both sound really good but I feel they are portraying different yelps. One sounds like a lost yelp and one sounds like contentment. Both are top notch.

Both sound good....let the turkeys decide.

Don't discount a nice clear note either.

I'd keep both them hens in my head and play whichever one was talking to me that day.

Terry could you explain how your going about creating more rasp. Are you drawing more air / to gain more pressure?

No, lips is where the rasp comes from. As you gain more control you can grab it when needed. That was the goal of this thread, to see what people prefer. I am curious by nature and figure anything and everything helps me learn.

All 3 are great Terry !!! I sure enjoy listening to your sound files. When it gets nice go into the woods and have your phone recording about 25 to 30 yrds away. Don't point your call right at your phone but 45 to 90 degrees off to the side of it and then let us hear them again. I bet we all think that they all sound like a live hen. Thanks for sharing them

That bark you talk about I refer to as thump. I know what you mean and it's certainly hard on a trumpet. Still working on it, I have my moments but it's inconsistent

You have improved greatly Terry.

Sounds great and I think you have reached a high level of skill. Congrats. Practice pays off. Good luck this Spring!

What call are you using? Who makes it ? And do you sound the same on most any call you use?  :turkey2:

A trumpet, and for the most part I can get very similar sounds out of any good trumpet or wingbone.

I would agree with everyone else.  They all sound really good.  Let Tom decide whether he wants the blonde, brunette  or the red head that day.

First one. Both will kill birds. Go outside and play them fifty yards from the recorder and you will see how much better they really sound. Anything coming out of a trumpet is turkey.
