Title: 2023 What 3 pots question
Post by: bowbird87 on December 28, 2022, 07:36:15 PM
If you were hunting in the morning what three pots would ride with you?

1. Buster persimmon red slate
2. Brad Roberts padauk 4 hole bronzed glass
3. Lonzo acrylic aluminum

Honorable mention:
Lonnie Mabry cedar slate

1) An older Halloran Crystal Mistress (that I just re-glued the playing surface on and it sounds incredible again)
2) Eddie Wynne persimmon grey slate
3) Lonzo acrylic anodized aluminum

Honorable mention (especially if chance of rain) - Buster acrylic glass over slate. Also an incredible pot!
Also have a Townsend Osage glass on the way, and based on the soundfile that Clay sent me of it, it would likely be in the starting line up!

Just need 1 pot and it's by Bill Lyman. Glass, slate or aluminum. Any of them will work.

Jealous of the Lyman pot call!

1. T Wyatt Walnut with ceramic
2. Brad Roberts Cedar with green slate
3. Clay Townsend Osage with glass

That's if I went tomorrow. I have a footballer padauk green aluminum that's a player and will see some woods time.

Do you have bloodwood, snakewood, bubinga, tulip, Dymondwood, and ebony?

I have about ten (or so) that I hate to leave any of them at home, so I have them on a "rotation" so-to-speak.
The ONE call that never leaves my vest is my Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen slate.

Going to hunt mostly ones I have made I think this year, I am making two in walnut pots now, one will be green anodized aluminum over glass, second will be crystal over carbon fiber. I would take the purple slate I made as well for something softer. Still have to do Tulipwood Tuesdays though so that would mean Crystal over Glass call From Old Crow Custom Calls and Tulipwood Pot Call with brass striking surface from John Sinclair and the Tulipwood Trumpet from Greg Gwaltney

I love posts like this, especially in the doldrums of winter.
First string lineup:
1.Randy Clark's, ( who??? ) Awesome and unusual square gray slate. A sentiment favorite
2.Mike Yingling's copper two-sider. High pitched effectiveness
3. Let's not forget about Jim Shelly, gray slate holly, mahoe, accents. All BS aside, one of the greatest sounding slates I've ever run
Second string:
1.Jimmy Shaffer's Atomic aluminum. A call so nice, I bought it twice
2. Brad Robert's wormy persimmon slate. He's on almost everyone's list for a reason
3. Chris Brumfiel's beautiful little osage glass pot. A 3 1/4" tiny weapon

Do I need only one pot to call them in, of course, but where's the fun in that?

That Clark caller is very interesting.

It's always in my vest, ordered it a couple years after the birth of my twin sons. It's super sweet and delicate sounding, sorta like a coaxer..

I usually just carry two early season and that's typically a Buster Halford green slate and a Lon Trice crystal. I usually always have a slate and a glass. As season progresses I'll start toting a third and it's always some sort of metal surface. Last year Mike Yingling's copper spent a lot of time in the woods. I like brass a lot too really late in the season.

No particular order, but one that's always in my Glenda Green satchel is Jim Shelley - cherry/ceramic along with something from Buster, Clay and Mark Cornelius. Others that will see possible playing time which i got this summer are Gary Anderson/ceramic, Lon Trice clear acrylic / crystal, his acrylic black / alum and a Kenneth Mullins cherry/ceramic ... I like changing out my calls during the spring and a lot of it has to do with the weather conditions which ones i hunt that day or week ....

An older Halloran Twisted Sister and Gary Anderson padauk ceramic. I'm still looking for the right call to round out my trio, I've bought several but just haven't found it yet. I would love for it to be a Platz slate, but I've probably got a better chance at striking oil in my backyard. Ironically, that's probably what it would take for me to be able to afford one with what his calls bring nowadays on the rare occasion that they do come up for grabs.

Crystal over slate- either Halloran or Schaffer.
Footballer persimmon slate
Stumpy ceramic.

Rain/High humidity day - Buster stoned alum acrylic pot.

If I'm feeling froggy just a Paul Durham green slate over glass and a Schaffer teardrop.

I like to change my pots up every spring until each pot gets a kill.

It's dependent for me, sometimes the morning are really humid. If so I go with a ceramic. Prefer a slate for soft talking.

My 3 favorites are:

Jon Hoff - zebrawood - glass
Halloran - wenge/walnut - grey slate
Dustin Jones - walnut - double glass/slate on back

Some days I'll switch a few out. Cedar glass call from Jones, cherry and Purple Heart double glass from Halloran. I have a few others...

This is a tough one, I have way too many to chose from.
If I was going to hunt in the morning there would be these three calls in my vest with a heavy assortment of JLH strikers.

Enticer Double Trouble: this is the one call that never leaves my vest. You can talk quiet with it and scream on it as well. Out of all the calls I have this 19.95 pocket call is the one that never gets replaced.

A ceramic... I have quite an assortment of ceramics, being it is my favorite surface but if I had to pick one right now I would have to give the nod to the Schaffer I just picked up at unicoi, before that it would have been the Big J calls ceramic made in a Beatty designed pot.

My third would have to be my Buster green slate in persimmon pot. I covered my screamers with the above two and can really tone it down with this call. I'm waiting on a red slate in persimmon from him to compare the two but this green slate will be hard to replace.

And since I don't like odd numbers... my fourth would be my glass in Osage pot from clay Townsend.

Like I said really hard to choose, but the double trouble never leaves. Need to order a replacement for that one just in case of emergency

1. For me would be a Paul hicks glass over slate in a walnut pot. It never leaves the vest

2. Is a crystal mistress

3. Varies depending on weather conditions but recently acquired a copper 2 slider from Mr. Yingling that is definitely going to see some woods time as well as a Robert's cedar slate.

I rotate several calls in and out throughout a season, like several of us probably do on here, but I've had the most success out of my first 2 calls listed and have the most confidence in them when I need to get something going

Oh wow, I couldn't pick just three. I'm a pot call man, but not a master by any means. I very rarely carry boxes, troughs, trumpets, etc.

One that is always in my vest is the Cody Drop dead green slate call. A very underrated call that I don't hear mentioned much at all. I was gifted this call and several matching strikers from Mr. Bill Zearing himself. This call sounds fantastic and I actually favor it over my spec 1 legend, world class, etc. that I own.

1. Cody drop dead green slate

2. Lonnie sneed heart breaker. I bought this call off this site after season last year but it will not leave my
vest from now on.

3. Cody Spec 1 legend.

4. David Halloran twisted sister

I don't own a lot of the pretty calls some on here do. My goal is to own calls that I'll hunt. If I won't hunt it, I can't afford to buy it right now unfortunately. Maybe one day.

I hunt mostly my own pots, 2 are my favorites. 3" osage orange slate/glass and a 3.5' bubinga green slate/ glass. My favorite other call is a Supreme " Double Suicide by Steve Reeves. He is "tricky" to deal with but the calls are very nice. There are a lot of good pots out there, only trick is finding a vest with 30 pot pockets, lol. Z
