Title: Box Call Finish
Post by: Boone on November 23, 2022, 02:12:03 PM
Hey guys,
I've been playing around with some of the kit calls from Brookside for something to play with in the evenings. For the pot calls, I've been using Truoil to finish them, but I've got a box call kit and was wondering if there was any downside to using it on that style of call as well?

I've tried bouncing around the internet for answers, but I haven't seen any mention of Truoil outside of the pot call builders?

I did a box call kit made of sycamore and walnut, I just left it unfinished and seems to be fine. Just throwing that out there even though I know it it now what you asked.

i use a spray-on finish from Minwax, works fine,, but i think i found something better,  it is a product from VHT, it is used for spraying  the wheels (RIMS) 0n cars,,,,,  dries in very fast and it is a hard finish,, i like it,,
whatever you use DON'T  SPRAY THE TOP OF THE BOX RAILS AND THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE PADDLE. keep these 2 surfaces raw,, unfinished. you will be fine

Many of the top builders use Deft spray.

I've seen the posts referring to Deft, and I'm pretty curious about the VHT product as well

I figured I'd cover the rail and the underside of the paddle to protect those.

Thanks for all the replies so far, they definitely help

Don't do that.  Keep the playing surfaces raw, like God made them.

Yea, that was an oversight on my wording, I meant I'd cover them up with painters tape to protect them while applying the finish

I would caution against using an oil of any kind as oil tends to penetrate the wood which will effect playability and could even ruin the call if it gets up on the rail or bottom of the paddle. A spray like Deft is what I used when I made boxes

The deft nitro cellulose spray was good and effective in satin and gloss ...but seems to be very unavailable lately...I've had to move onto a guitar spray with better results...it's expensive though
