Title: Corn trenches, how many is really enough
Post by: crow on November 11, 2022, 10:56:30 PM
So it's been a somewhat slow fall turkey season,

just wondering on average how many trenches do you dig before at least 1 or 2 of them start getting hit regularly.

This is not a discussion about corn spreading antifloxens to the population.
Lets limit it to just the facts about length of rows, most effective distance from the blind, and how many turkeys you average off of each trench.

About 8 inches deep and 20 yards long. You should also dig a pit about 5 yards from the end of you trench to stand in. You need to be shooting parallel to the ground to get maximum effectiveness per shot. Or stand on your head if digging a pit is too much work. Also use that high dollar tractor supply corn and not that trashy gas station farmer Fran stuff. Keep it classy.

You need a no - till corn planter to maximize your rows, sometimes you may need curved rows to get them to come around the corner of the field, straight rows don't always work...  :fud: :TooFunny:

Another hint:  Save shotgun shells by just putting in a trotline with hooks every foot or so apart.  That way if you happen to exceed the NJ limit of thirty seven per day, you can just throw a few back.  Turkeys are stoopid and you can just catch them again the next day. ...Plus, you don't have to be there to watch the trench all day!  You can just go watch YouTube turkey hunting shows to find out where to go huntin' next spring and you can check your trotline every couple of hours!    ;D

Secondary hint:  Use canned corn for the hooks,...much easier to get the hook into!   :toothy12: :toothy9:

Thats a fine line my friend, a fine line.
But everything tastes just a little bit smoother when it's made from corn.

Congrats on your fall gobblers, you had a heck of a season

I've never heard of this before. So if I make a trench and a deer shows up, is it ok to shoot it before it eats all of my corn?

Just when you think you know some people, you must be on one of those high dollar bottomland leases, no self respecting mt. boy is digging 8" deep trenches on these rocky ridge tops

Always wondered how they came up with that name

Never found an active still,
but 5th grade cutting thru the neighbors farm saw smoke coming up out of a hollow.  almost ran down into it, stopped at the rim and peeped over, 7-8 hobos had a couple cook fires going and were plucking chickens pilfered from somebody farm.

Title: Re: Corn trenches, how many is really enough

I have no idea if it was a serious question or not, but I guess at best I was being sarcastic and worst I am trolling....either way I'll wear the hat I came in with.

I did not take it serious because in every state I hunt in it is illegal to bait turkeys. I believe some states do allow it, but I don't know. Even if legal I would not hunt over bait. It's legal to bait deer here in Ohio and I do not allow the placing of bait on my property. Of 1500 acres of family land there are zero bait stations or feeders, we mange habitat. I have many friends who bait deer and shoot turkeys off those feeder sites, and they sre still friends, but they know I disagree.

If having some fun offended someone, I am sorry. However, I suggest when a question like this is posted the author should state it is a serious question and I will resist making a sarcastic remark, but no promises. I hold a dim view of the practice and things like that usually bring out the old troll in me. Call me an old grouchy bastard or whatever, that's how I feel.

For those that really are interested in learning, a simple google search may be a better approach.

Except for their beady little eyes there is a big difference in fish and fowl.
And everybody knows sardines are salt water, You might be thinking of smelts, and the smelt migration comes under federal jurdiction. and I want no part of messing with that

Louisiana  hot sauce is primo but makes you carry too much water turkey hunting.

Back on track,
Happy, if  you ever lose your prime bottom land and your forced to the rocky high ground, no need to dig a hole to shoot from.

just google-- old time long range Creedmore  positions, all you have to do is clear an opening at the base of your brush blind for a full effect sweeping shot

Dang, I just listened to it while driving. Not a good choice. No matter how hard I pressed the gas I couldn't get away from it. Would definitely need some of that good Pennsylvania Dutch eggnog to make that bearable. I was hoping the band Southern Culture on the Skids was performing that song. That would have just been to perfect though.

Gene Nunnery would be spinning in his grave to read about Corn Trench Baiting.
What is next- send up a Drone at Sunset to find out where Gobblers are Roosting- " Back of Beyond"!

Wasn't Ol' Gene the one that wrote the book "Trot Linin' for Turkeys"?  Could be wrong about that, though.  He might not have known Nunnery about it...   ;D ::) :happy0167: :funnyturkey:

Hmm. I figure a good strafing run with a drone down a corn trench could be quite effective.

3 makes sense, it's very hard to keep an eye on that 4th one behind you.

That makes sense.

Each one 40 yards long? Or should one make them 25 yards long so as to "bring them in close?"

25yds should do it, according to the KPY program the preferred #8 dove load runs out of juice around 33yds, 40 would be stretching it even if pulling both triggers on an old Fox

Can't believe no one has brought up the special needs to design both gobbler and hen trenches.  Getting them separate is key.  The old time mountain poach...I mean .... hunters I grew up around also said a separate jake trench was doable. Not sure about that one .... those guys did stretch it abit on occasion.
