Title: reflexl hunting log
Post by: reflexl on April 16, 2022, 01:28:14 PM
4/16 morning
I went over to the north farm and saw 3 long beards right in the area I wanted to hunt this morning. It poured rain last night and this morning. I went but all I got was wet. I won't carry an antique gun in the rain so I took my 835 with 2 3/4"  2oz #8 Apex TSS. I used a Mark Cornelius slate and a Riley Corder Glass pot this morning. I heard one hen yelp behind me but that was it. Going back this evening.

4/16 evening
Went back and saw 4 hens. No beards. I called one of the hens up playing around. Gobblers will show up sooner or later.

Well the birds weren't cooperating so I figured I would take a sabbatical. I am going to check fields after work and try to figure out where them birds are.

Are sabbaticals good to eat?   I think I shot one one time and it made me sick when I ate it.  We don't have a spring sabbatical season here, only legal in the fall.

Boys I feel like I let the team down. Covid wrecked my season. I have contributed on every team I have ever been on. Huge congrats to all of you fellers that wore them out. It looks like some of you had awesome seasons.

You ain't let nobody down.   Trash talk was job one.  I was half way through the season before I figured out this was a turkey contest.   I thought it was a beauty contest and we had it wrapped up with just me and Happy.   COVID sux!

Sorry your season was a bust this year, but you sure didn't let anybody down....you had COVID. It appears that you've recovered, which is great and there is always next year.

As far as the contest goes....it's all in good fun anyway. Plus, it was West Augusta and Guesswho carrying the rest of us with those ostriches they shot.  ;D

I was a little disappointed in mine.   I thought for sure it was one of those elusive sabaticals I've been hearing about.

It's been fun guys. My season would have been the same without the competition. It was formed first and foremost to have fun and include everyone(even the other teams) in some good natured banter. Winning isn't even an honest goal. If turkey hunting and turkey season isn't all about fun then there is no reason to do it. So nobody should feel like they let anyone down. I think if we ever had a real GOATS turkey camp we would get evicted from the premises. Not even Ronnie's hair or my good looks could save us from that.

I think we're just a product of poor leadership.

I am glad several of you killed ostriches and sabbaticals. I am working on a cook books and will include both in the cookbook. I will need a pic of a sabbatical for the cover. Preferably one with big teeth.

I figured Jim was the only one crazy enough to lead try and lead this group. From what I can tell he didn't even try which is probably the smartest thing he could have done, though I hate to give him credit for that

I've never come close to a sabbatical, so far as I know, but this purports to be one.  I always imagined they looked more like a jabberwock.

I think that's a Jake Sabbatical.   You can tell by the uneven hair line and small horns.   Horns are a good indication of a Sabbaticals age.   1/2" or less is usually a Jake, 3/4-1"  would be a two year old, over 1" puts him at least 3.   1 1/2" or more and you have killed a granddaddy of a Sabbatical.

I shot a mossy head sabbatical yesterday. A pic will be coming to clear up all the theory and conjecture of what they look like. Classic off the roost hunt.  They're tough, pulled both triggers and gave him both barrels at once, he almost made it across the road, but a quick reload and again both barrels stopped him at the shoulder. Hope you have some outside grill recipes, they smell when you pluck them

I totally agree, no one feels like you let us down. We'd have really been upset if you didn't beat off Covid. I think we should get bonus points for have a tough arse SOB on our team. Turkey's be darned living is much better. You'll be back in form next season.

Be blessed

I agree. Has to be a Jake. I heard they taste better. The secret to cooking them correctly is lots of cinnamon. Covers up the dirty sweaty sock smell.
