Title: Rem 870 with IC .665 and Longbeard 6s numbers?
Post by: jmerchant1 on April 11, 2022, 08:38:04 PM
Does anyone happen to run the following setup: Rem 870 (26” barrel), Indian Creek .665 choke, and 3” Longbeards #6 1 3/4oz? If so, how many pellets are you getting in the 10” at 40 yards? Just curious how my results compare

Mine is close to what you’re asking a few posts down

not an IC choke but it is .665   it's a RSFT from a 21" 870 12ga with 3" LB #6.  might help you to get an idea

Wow that’s a great pattern and numbers! My .665 IC only put 154 hits in the 10” at 40 yards. Maybe I need to try another choke and/or a tighter constriction. Thanks for the info!

I've had the old 870 for over 30 years and have tried a LOT of chokes but hands down with the LB 6's the RSFT is the trick for that gun.

That is an amazing pattern for a three inch shell in LB #6's. I would hunt with that any day of the week.

In my experience with multiple barrels and multiple 870s the .665 constriction is a tad big for 6s. Just my opinion. With a jellyhead .660 and a 28” barrel and lbxr 6s 13/4 oz I was able to achieve 250 in the 10 at 40. With a sumtoy .655 I was able to get closer to 270 in the 10 at 40. With a 21” barrel and the .655 I was able to achieve 240 in the 10 at 40.  Didn’t use the .660 with the 21 being the pattern was what I considered perfect with the .655. I had previously shot nitro 4,5,7s with the .660 jellyhead and the 28” barrel and it patterned about the same mid 200s in the 10 at 40 but heavy shot nitros back then were 60 dollars a box. Mag blends 5,6,7 were 40 a box and they also patterned about the same. The lbxr 6s were 20 bucks a box. The best for the money by far. With all this said , if you can archieve 200 or better in the 10 at 40 I wouldn’t worry about it.

Wow, are those numbers with 3” or 3.5” shells??
Again I’m using the 3” and have never got 200 with any choke I’ve tried at 40 yards. Best I have is 180 with the .665 Indian Creek. I’ve tried the Jellyhead (.660), Kicks GT (.655), Rem Super Full (.665 I think), and the Tight Wad and those were all in the low 100s. Sumtoy and Jebs are probably going to be what I try next. Trulock and Carlsons are on my list too. Will stick with the IC until something outperforms it.

Those were with 3” shells. The same load the OP mentioned . Actually they could have been the 1&7/8oz loads but those were hard to find. 1&3/4 were readily available

Yes you absolutely need to try a jebs or sumtoy. The the long beards seem to really like the staged chokes. And non ported chokes typically do pattern a little better IMO with lead. I would try the sumtoy first. Also…. Absolutely make sure your barrel is clean, like squeaky clean. Don’t run hoppes and then shoot it…. Run some denatured alcohol through it after cleaning to make sure it’s dry and oil free. That may very well give you a small advantage on paper. My forcing cones in my 870s are also bored out, and I hone my barrels ever so often. I used to do the polishing method on this page , but eventually bought a home kit. I spent a good bit of trial and error and my guns run better , squeeky clean, and the polish/hone made about a 15-20 pellet difference by itself . But yeah even back in the days of shooting Remington nitro turkeys or double x 6s I was putting 160-170 in the 10 at 40
