Title: Scoring and Pictures Discussion
Post by: GobbleNut on March 03, 2022, 04:41:43 PM
Thought I would throw in a thread for any needed discussion about the scoring and picture requirements for the contest (along the same lines as reflexl's "tips for the contest" thread).  I am assuming everybody on the team is familiar with the contest requirements and what we each need to do to document our birds, but if anybody is not and we need to clarify anything, we can discuss it here.

Note: Yes, I am aware that the requirements for documenting our birds are a PIA, but it is what it is.  We are also aware that some of our team members may not wish to go through the motions to meet those requirements.  That is cool and all is good.  We are all in this to have a good time regardless. However, anybody taking that position is hereby required to talk additional smack to the other teams to make up for it, though!   ;D

If we were to have a full contingent of nine team members harvesting and documenting a bird or two, that would be good, but if we don't, it's not the end of the world,...and we will still be THE GOATS!!!   :you_rock:

I promise, that if I somehow through a strange twist of fate is should kill a gobbler that I will do the following.
: Submit a picture of the beard being measured with both end of the tape visible and no chunks missing in the middle.
: Submit a picture of each spur being measured without starting from the front of the leg.
: Submit a picture of the turkey on the scale without 3 pounds of tss shoved inside of it.
: Submit a picture a myself with said turkey and the final score.(I am extremely good looking so that part is easy).
So there Jim. I am about a 50% chance of being able to add 1 turkey towards our goal of 9. It will be a legit one though.

The only score that matters is our own. With that said I will do the dance. Just go ahead put guesswho down for an 89.273 , that sound ok Ronnie?

I think you shorted me a beard or two.

I think we're only allowed to score the one longest beard, but if I add the other beards that brings you to 104.575, is that better.

My home farm always produces a lot of double beards. I have killed probably 15 multiple bearded birds. So we got this partner.

Nice :icon_thumright:   About five or six years ago I had a streak going.   Four multi-beards in a row.  A double, a triple and two four bearded birds.  The odd thing was those four birds came from three different locations.   Two in Georgia but they were within about five miles of each other.  The two Bama birds were 170 miles away from the Georgia birds and were separated by about 50 miles between them.   I have one spot that about one out of four has multiple beards.   Crazy place.

Can one of you fine gentlemen please tell me how to resize a photo to post it with Tapatalk? I can load them, but anything taken in portrait, looks way oversized. The landscape ones look ok.
I thought that I would add a couple pics to the "Ghost" thread, for practice just in case I happen to stumble upon a road kill that I can use for the contest.

Thanks!

I use this and usually set the pixels at 800x1000. I'm not sure how it woks with tapatalk. I would suggest you Just resize it in a browser and save to a folder or album then post the resized pic. It'll come up showing the pixel size.

https://imageresizer.com/

Steps:
Open image resizer in your browser
click "select image"
go to dimensions and set size (by default if you enter a width of 800 it will set length to 1067 pixels OK)
click resize
download to a file or album
find the pic in new file
Then post that picture in post

Oh I made myself a click and fill scoresheet in word if anyone wants a copy I can email it. I plan on just taking a screenshot of it filled in and posting that. Writing it down and then putting it in OGF calculator is probably easier. I just like tinkering with stuff like that. Once we get birds coming in I might build a spreadsheet on the team

For tapatalk when I pick a photo off of my phone it gives me 3 size choices. I always pick medium.

Okay team, Randy has gotten us off to a great start in the contest.  His pictures and measurements bring up a good point for discussion.  Specifically, the weight measurement brings up a question that all of us need to be aware of.  A lot of the new digital scales will let you choose how you weigh your bird.  Preferrably, we want the weight to be shown in pounds and ounces,...not pounds and tenths of a pound. If you use a digital scale that has options like that, make sure you use the "pounds and ounces" function.  (Randy is checking his scale to verify for me which it was set at on his)

In Randy's pictures, you will see that his scale is reading 16.4 pounds.  That .4 could mean four tenths of a pound or it can mean four ounces, depending on how the scale is set.  If the reading is in ounces, then the weight value for the score is 16.25 rather than 16.4.  I know I am being a bit nitpicky here, so please forgive me for that.  I am just trying to make sure everybody understands this and we are all on the same page.   :icon_thumright:

It sure looks like Randy's scale is decimal lbs, not lbs and ounces.  All the scales I've looked at that break out lbs and ounces don't have the decimal point and show both "lbs" and "oz" separately.  If you had a scale with a decimal point that was supposed to be pounds and ounces, then 18 lbs 14 ounces would be 18.14?  That would be nuts.  I couldn't find anything in the contest rules about required units.

Yeah, you would think that would be the case, but I have seen scales that read in ounces but have the decimal point. Pretty sure I still have one of them.
Regardless, everybody needs to make sure they are reading their scales correctly one way or the other...

In case of doubt, an easy way to verify one way or the other is to hang the scale and pull down slowly.  If the number of the right of the decimal point goes above 9 (reads up to 15 and then goes to the next pound), then the scale is reading in ounces rather than tenths of a pound. If the number to the right of the decimal point goes from 9 to the next pound, then it is reading in tenths of a pound.   :icon_thumright:

I'm in way over my head.   Can I just ship my birds to our captain so he can take pictures, measure, weigh, find a news paper,  and score them?
Title: Re: Scoring and Pictures Discussion

I just took of my boots and socks and did some high-level math. Gobblenut said he had 11 tags so with the one turkey already on the board that leaves him with 8 slots to fill with 11 tags. If I carried the one correctly that means he only has to bat about .730. That sound perfectly doable for a GOAT and puts the rest of us on easy street, watching the tweety birds and whatnot. No pressure Jim.

Yeah, this captaining stuff is getting way more complicated than my feeble mind is capable of handling.  I had to do a lot of guzintas to figure out all that complicated weight jibber-jabber I posted.  Had to go take a nap so my head would stop spinning.   ;D

I can't guarantee it, but hopefully I got this picture/scoring stuff figured out. I didn't think it would kick my butt as bad as it did....that's where thinkin got me. At least I knocked the dust off of my calls and my shotgun is now patterned, so I promise to do better next time!!

Holy crap....I didn't realize that bein a GOAT was this hard!!  ;D ;D

Ya done fine Randy. Congrats on the gobbler. If nothing else we will stick together and swim to shore. Except Gobblenut, he has to go down with the ship. One of the perks of being captain I guess.

Yep, for someone who claimed to not know how to post pictures, you picked it up quite nicely, Randy.  It's like a lot of other stuff, it seems real complicated until you  figure it out and have done in a time or two, and then you say,..."well heck, that's not so hard!"
As for "goin' down with the ship"....for some of us, once you have done it a time or two, ya' just learn to accept being in over your head.   :toothy9:

Brother, just wait about 20-25 years and your priorities will change. All of a sudden you'll realize two of the most important things in life are what goes in your mouth and how it comes out. Turkey hunting is just something you do between eating and pooping. Sometimes you even have  to do those things while turkey hunting. Just look at the pictures people posted of their turkey hunting past, we start skinny, full head of hair, no mountain too high, no bird too far and end about 25-30 lbs  heavier, way less hair and a heck of a lot slower. Oh yeah, that bird way across the valley becomes, I'll go after him tomorrow. I would of wrote about how your sex life changes, but I can't remember ever having sex, I don't know where the Mrs. got the two kids. I could write more, but I gotta go poop.

Yep we get older, fatter and better looking!
This one is funny to me. It was my first turkey. I called him up with a slate call that had a plastic pot.
I still have that call. This was after 3 years of futility. I probably weighed half what I do now. This desk job has been rough on me. This was originally taken with a polaroid camera. I don't know if you can still get film for them.

Time gets us all. However I have always tried to go as gracefully as possible. Having a desk job doesn't help but I still exercise regularly and eat smart. It helps that my wife is a fitness fanatic as well. My first longbeard from over 20 years ago is pictured below. Since then there is a little more grey in the hair and I can tell that I don't recover as quickly but I am probably in better overall health now than I was back then. I try to take my grandad advice and stay active, eat smart and don't always use machines to do the work for you. Shoveling snow and hand splitting wood is good excersize. He is 86 and still doing those things.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220325/88ca4dc53d85bdc5af5e239ae3ec092c.jpg)

In that pic of me with my first bird I could still bench press 300lbs, do one handed 100lbs curls. Now my curls are cups of coffee and my presses are pushing away from the table! I used to un 6 miles a day, 1000 setups, 500 pull ups and 500 push ups and free weights 2 to 3 times a week. I guess I have let things slip.
