Title: New 2022 Turkey vests
Post by: kytrkyhntr on November 28, 2021, 01:42:45 PM
Anyone heard of new vests coming out this spring? The only one I'm aware of at the moment is OL TOM.

FHF gear is making some turkey attachments for their chest rig, worth a look.

I have the k&h run n gun 100 on the way to try out,Its new for me,I have went to a minimalist approach on the majority of my hunts the last few years and I am excited to try this out, I have to admit that after buying a turkey chair a few years ago.I carry it now and leave the big heavy vests at home.

I love the chair,Its a better option for me than the weight of a full vest loaded with stuff I rarely use, I now carry a handful of mouth calls and a pot call, maybe a box call.

I have tried multiple versions of a murse,I like them for keeping calls in,in my truck or at home but I didnt like the item in the field.

Heartbreak Kid has chronicled his search for the perfect vest quite well on here over the past years.  I've marveled at his trials, he's bought, used or returned a lot of vests.  I think he discovered what I suspected, there is no perfect vest.
I could carry what I hunt with in a small waistpack, but the water, snippers, extra shells, snack and the Thermacell all need a place to ride too, so I wear a fairly light vest and pack a Gobbler Lounger.

Looks like Ol Tom is introducing a new camo pattern in their stuff. Saw this on Mack's PW the other day. They've also had some pictures of the pattern on the Non Typical Instagram page as well.

Camo pattern going "full circle", it appears.  That is one of, or close to, the original woodland camo pattern that was one of the few that were available back in the 1960's era.

I like to wear the old army green stuff as a jacket when its greening up in the woods. It really is full circle as camo goes and that wheel still rolls just fine.

The resurgence of the older mossy oak patterns I think have helped some other brands realize that the older patterns were really really good. OG bottomland is as good as it gets imo

I love the older patterns for nostalgia and they are probably pretty good for up close turkey hunting but I think most of them turn into a big dark blob at a little bit of distance.  I do like bottomland.

I'm making my own vest this year, that will be as close to perfect of a vest one can be for me, and I think I have an idea of a design that many others will like as well.

I'm gonna let this one hang out there haha. Since I don't have anything to show currently and I'm not a big production likelihood is I may only get my own personal vest done for this year. I've messed around building some prototypes but really it's all been practice and learning fabrics and stuff. I have a good idea of what I'm doing though and when I get back home from my holiday travels I'll be putting together my vision.

Amazing that it took a company to semi-duplicate the Bob Dixon Vest. This vest looks good in the pics, has similar claw type shoulder straps, the magnetic flap striker pockets, the edge trim mimics the Dixon vest. Looks like a nice layout, materials look pretty good. Interested in hearing how hunters rate it. Ol Tom makes nice equipment, hopefully it is as good as it looks in person......wish them luck.

The one thing I am looking for now in a vest, is one that is light and extremely breathable,Id prefer mesh, almost like a leafy suit top. I find vests are too warm once it heats up,the last few years we had winter conditions until the middle of May and then it was summer, basically no spring. I don't think there will ever be a "perfect" turkey vest, there are so many that are good, and so many with with great options, only to be saddled down with other options on the same vest that are useless and garbage. I have went looking for years and I am still searching.

I'll say I don't know why they don't just give up on those stupid box call pockets. They never fit and who really want to carry their box call in that location. I'd like to see companies start making more practical decisions on their layout. Make a pocket for a pruning shear or a range finder or a thermacell. If they'd let a couple of these guys that hunt every day of the season get together with the design team they could probably make something decent. Oh yeah and the seat. Somebody should be able to figure that out by now. I shouldn't have to make a speed seat mod on a $150 dollar vest. If you use magnets use some that actually work. I can never reach the dang seat buckles back behind me. Ok rant over lol. Whatever happened to that new vest company that came out last year? I think they were in Alabama.

I see I can buy the Will Primos vest up here now, online of course but is it the same crap quality as their Rocker vest? I assume It is,but It is something I havent tried yet.  I ordered the rng 100 and it got destroyed on its way here from amazon, said it was undeliverable and I got frustrated and told them to shove the replacement where the sun didn't shine,as I wanted it for a gift for christmas and I have had 5 issues with amazon the last 3 months and never had a single issue the last 8 years. Its almost like they never really had the items I ordered. They are all a bunch of immigrants when you try and contact them and none ever speak english, either ghetto or Chinese, truth hurts.

I still want to try the Rng 100, Ill eventually break down and order it from amazon as my urges will be too much for me to constrain myself,It is the time of year to start shopping for the best time of the year.

I do not believe they will ever build a turkey vest that is perfect,at least not in my lifetime and I am 41,42 in a few months. I don't think it can be done. Too many variables and everyone likes something different. I used to want to carry as much as Santa does in his sack, now I just want to carry what I need which, is what some others have stated, a few calls but mostly pockets for other items like rangefinder, water bottle holder, pruners etc. I didn't even run any calls last spring after a few days other than mouthcalls. It felt great after the first few days to not be hauling around the kitchen sink but I still want to carry my "neccessities"

I did find a seat that is perfect,I bought a heated seat from tidwe for bowhunting and it keeps your  warm in -25 and has 3 different heat levels and runs off a power bar you charge. I will be toting it around in early season to put on my chair and sit, early season it can be -10 to -15 in the mornings.

Stop lying to yourself, it's a MURSE!

Been using an Elite 3 I think, for the last 3 years. It has a good cushion but will slide on steep ground.

I need to go to a multi pocket fanny pack. Same as the LGBTQ people use but in camo. It's a fanny pack regardless. Ain't sure how to combat the seat portion yet. I like a seat and am not carrying a chair around all season. I also do really like the game bag to pack out a turkey.

If there were a perfect vest for me this year, I would change my mind next year.

How does her inner tube seat feel compared to a traditional seat on a turkey vest? Thinking about getting one from her and sewing on some elastic to be similar to the speed seat on the cabelas vest

It's really nice if your sitting in a flat spot. It's sits a little higher than a typical vest seat. I've found it's not quite as good if there's a little slope around the tree base because it will want to slide downhill. I may give it a try this season and see how it works out.

I would love to chat and hear your thoughts on a vest would need to be perfect. I don't hunt every day but I hunt a good bit.

Not bragging on the butt cushion but I sourced the densest memory foam I could find when designing my vest and thats why I sell it on each one.

I will say this...

I have looked at vests each year, and for the most part they all suck.

I currently am using the Will Primos Signature vest and I actually love it.  It have everything I need, its super comfortable, with my biggest concern revolving around durability.

I would love to see a Badlands vest as I am a big fan of their products.

Title: Re: New 2022 Turkey vests
Post by: Gobble Nole on January 12, 2022, 10:37:54 AM
My opinions of the vest are a follows.

Well thought out.  There are a few bells and whistles that I have no use for.  I do not find it bulky but I am 6'4" and 260 lbs.  I am a big dude and I have plenty with and around me when I am hunting.  The vest is fairly streamlined and quick to move in the woods, agile for the most part.

I do not find it flimsy.  In the past If I have had seams begin to wear out, I will over stitch them with Power Pro fishing line.  So far I have not had to do that...

Again, I was burned with the Rocker vest.  I liked it but absolute piece of junk.  So I am just waiting for this one to blow up.  But so far I am happy with it.

Hopefully I get 10 years out of it and many hours in the turkey woods.

I have wore a Russell Outdoors Limbhanger Vest for many years. Purchased a Primos Signature  Vest for last years season. I found it to be a very comfortable vest that was well designed and constructed.
I am 6'5" and 250#  and found the seat cushion to be very comfortable.

I have wore a Russell Outdoors Limbhanger Vest for many years. Purchased a Primos Signature  Vest for last years season. I found it to be a very comfortable vest that was well designed and constructed.
I am 6'5" and 250#  and found the seat cushion to be very comfortable.

I love my Limbhanger vest. Very well made, thought out. The only charge I made was I changed my seat to a Cabelas Speed seat. Did not have to alter the vest in anyway, just uncliped the factory seat and put the speed seat straps right in the existing buckles. Works fantastic, looks like it came on the vest...

Has anyone on here ever have a seat made for them? Thinking about getting a new memory foam seat made and buying some camo fabric to cover it

I will have to try one,If you get 10 years from a vest I think its a good purchase. I wore the same turkey pants for 11 seasons and they finally, basically rotted and ripped off me while hunting in 2020. I was sad to see them go,I had a lot of great hunts wearing them.I had sewn them half a dozen times.

It's really nice if your sitting in a flat spot. It's sits a little higher than a typical vest seat. I've found it's not quite as good if there's a little slope around the tree base because it will want to slide downhill. I may give it a try this season and see how it works out.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No doubt, almost everywhere I hunt I'm sitting down on a hillside.

To help keep from sliding....before you sit down, look around for a piece of a dead tree branch. 4" - 5" in diameter will work. Put it in front of the tree, then sit down. That section of tree branch will wedge under the front part of your seat and keep you from sliding downhill. Creates a pocket for you to sit down and stay in place.

I ordered some new early season turkey & early-mid season whitetail clothing tonight, and when I did, I checked up on the Run & Gun 100, and I am glad I did because the price has dropped by $23 from the first time I ordered it, and It must be in the local depot as It will be here by Sunday/Monday. It looks perfect for what I want to carry, we will see.

I've been really interested in the chest packs lately for running and gunning and I just ordered this one. It's made by Outdoor Vision in Alaska and the reviews are really good. The layout seems to be well thought out, guess I will see when I hit the woods with it this season.

Thanks for sharing this, I'm going to try one. I haven't been able to find a vest that I'm happy with, but really like the looks of this. I would like to still find a way to attach a seat to it. There's apparently a couple webbing straps on the back, so once I get it I'll see what I can come up with.

This chest pack looks too big to me. There's a threshold you cross on the size of chest rigs where they become really annoying. This looks so big to me that I'd rather just have a vest. They get hot and sweaty once the weather heats up. I have a smaller Hill People Gear chest pack, I think it's the recon or the snubby, that I wear hiking a good bit. I finally have figured out how to carry water with it. I love the chest rig for throwing on for a hike. I can carry my essentials and a Glock 19 in mine but have no way to carry water. Now I have a Kifaru hydro pack that hooks into the chest pack. It's a pretty slick set up but I don't think I'll use it for turkey hunting unless it's later in the season and I'm going for a long walk.

I'm usually shedding clothes (at least a jacket) for much of the season and am not going to hunt with it tied around my waist.  Not to mention leafy suits, deer sheds, mushrooms, man...there's just too much to pack around.

I don't know how y'all manage not having a vest pouch.

So, I'm new to the forum. Been wanting to join for a while. I get a lot of reviews of gear from this forum. figured I would throw my opinion in the ring.
I am a avid turkey hunter. Consider myself somewhat of a minimalist as well. I like to have everything i need without bulk or weight. I travel turkey hunting to different states a lot each year and never know what situation or terrain i may find myself in. That being said, I have owned about every kind of turkey vest out there. Some I bought and sent back. I used a Cabela's tatical tat'r 2 for about 5 years and loved it. However, I felt it to be too heavy and hot for me in the late season. Last year i bit the bullet on the badlands vest in bottomland. In my opinion it is the best vest on the market for my style of hunting. Holds enough without being too bulky. It is extremely light weight, with tons of adjustment. Everything is laid out how i need it. everything sits chest high so it doesn't bunch up when you sit down, and the best part of the badlands vest is it has an identical seat pad layout as the tactical tat'r 2 vest ( which is the best part about the tac tat'r vest. I dont know why more companies don't remove magnets and go to this quick and silent elastic strap style seat). Anyways, thanks for listening. i have posted a picture of the vest below. Seems the only place you can find the vest in bottomland in on Amazon.
The badlands may not be for everyone, but for me and my style of hunting it is truly the perfect vest, and the quality is absolutely EXCEPTIONAL.
I'd be glad to answer any other question to people interested.

I went away from the turkey vest years ago and its been the best decision I've ever made.  I've been using a belt system from Marsupial Gear.  Its is everything I need any more.  Using the belt system in conjunction with the bino harness I have all the room in the world.  Its pretty much like a army belt system but built for hunters.  Below is the link

For seat cushion I have made my own.  I went a bought a wheel barrow tire tube and sewed a pouch with a shoulder strap.  I have sit on this seat for hours on end and not think twice. Lightweight and never wears out.  If the tube leaks go to local hardware and get you another for 5 bucks.

https://www.marsupialgear.com/collections/modular-belt-system

Tried to post a pic but not sure if its going to work of the belt system but link is above.  All American made in the USA

Agreed but in my opinion the new vests that our available today aren't setup great.  They are also all cheaply made and you don't get your money out of them, that's why I have gone to other systems.  New vests on the market today are hot and heavy or zippers and other stuff break in first season.

I've been trying to find a vest for years but not satisfied with any of them.  I retired (or put away really) my bob dixon I used for a couple seasons.  I saw how much people are paying for the Dixon and said this is to valuable to be hunting with everyday.  Ever since then been searching for a new vest but Marsupial is where I have landed and really enjoy the setup.

Gotcha.  That looks like a great set up...you may have me spending some money soon.

I've never had that hydration pouch in hand before.  With no bladder, do you think you could fit a light jacket in it?

I do worry about the strikers getting wet from sweat in that bino pocket.

I have an Alps Grand slam I like fairly well but it is a bit bulky, especially with a few decoys in it. I usually hunt a field from a blind and sit in a chair in which case I have everything carefully laid out around me but If I decide to move around some I use the vest. I would definitely look for something smaller if I was going to be walking more than a mile or 2.

Saw the vest today; typical Sitka camo pattern and no option.  Kind of a minimalist vest, not something I'd be interested in.  Retails at $249.  It is at the David Halloran booth.

He said it was a bear spray holder but it was tight so it may not fit all boxes.  Kifaru and marsupial both make a hydration pouch, but I think the kifaru is more versatile and better designed.  That system would be great and you could easily attach your favorite butt pad to the back and flip it up and clip it.   I think i'd store my strikers inside with the bino's to keep them dry from my sweat though.

You're talking around $400 all said and done for that setup.  Buy once, cry once all USA MADE gear though!

After getting the Turkey Pro, I ended up sending it back. I'm below average build (5'5" 160lbs) and it just did not carry comfortably on my chest. My chest and torso are too narrow and it felt bulky and uncomfortable on me. For larger folks, it may be a better fit, but didn't work out for me. I then decided to pick up the run n gun 200 and initial impressions of it are much better.

You might want to look at alaskan guide creations stuff, made in the us too. I'm think I'm going w their bino harness and bladder pack. Kuiu has something similar , theirs is a bit cheaper , it nets out at 180 w a bladder.

The sticking point w all of them for me is a box call holder.  I may just go w a readhead holster ( the one for a belt loop) and thread it to the right or left on the harness chest strap.

I am a big fan of the chest harnesses. Fit my style of hunting perfectly. Have been on the hunt for the perfect one.

Purchased the Run n Gun 100 and it's almost perfect. Only issue are the internal slate call pockets are extremely difficult to get calls back into -- going to see if I can modify it. And it's just a tad too small to close properly with 2 calls and my vortex 8 x 32's in there.

Also have an outdoor vision pro turkey on order, looks promising but also look more bulky.

That bear spray holster fits my box and it's made from don Watkins. It's a little tight but has loosened up some leaving the call in there. It's almost perfect. Def wasn't the cheapest option. But does what I want it to well.  Look forward to using it this season.  There are different bear spray holsters on the market. I went with the marsupial to match up with my Bino harness. I also have a Fanny pack to throw into the mix if I wanted more options. Like I said tho a Vest would be the cheaper option! But I like my binos being with me. And it cuts out on some bulk from the vest.   I did look into the outdoor vision setup. It kinda looked big. With these attachments my Bino harness really isn't to bulky. And won't really be in the way shooting or sitting. I'm always wearing it when I'm in the woods anyways. So this makes sense.

My " Tom Teaser " turkey purse goes hunting every time I do. I am secure in my manhood. Best satchel out there. Al Baker
