Title: 28 Gauge I C Disappointment
Post by: Spring Creek Calls on August 28, 2021, 07:11:50 AM
Recently ordered and received an Indian Creek choke for my SA-28. The choke tube (Mobil) would not even begin to screw in. I know it's not the guns threads as I have an aftermarket Briley tube that screws in effortlessly. Sent it back for a refund.

Could it have been the wrong choke? Someone put an Invector in a Mobil-marked packet accidentally, I mean?

Very strange. I’m sure they’ll make it right.

It was marked "28 Gauge Mobil" on the choke. I've read comments on other hunting forums of this happening with 28 gauge chokes from I C.

I C has offered to make a choke that will fit my gun if I send them the barrel, no charge. I'm gonna take them up on that generous offer.  Will update when complete.

I received my barrel today just 10 days after shipping it to Indian Creek. The BDS .525 fit perfectly and I'm sure will shoot a great pattern. From very disappointed to very happy in 10 days!

I’m curious. Did they tell you what the problem was?

They said the threads on the SA-28's are too shallow. I'm not really buying that as my Briley tube threaded on effortlessly and they had no idea what gun I would use it on, just ordered a 28 Mobil thread.

Just for my own curiosity I looked up your Mossberg SA-28 and on the Briley website it specifies a Huglu threaded choke tube. I’ve never heard of that type but apparently its also used for the CZ.
I've had multiple Mobil chokes in mine so something may have changed or it's an error.

I looked on the Briley website and it only shows chokes for Mossberg 12, 20 ,28 gauge nothing about Mossberg International  SA-20 or SA-28.  It's a whole different gun.

I have 2 SA-28. I had the same issue on the first one. The only choke that fit was the one in the barrel. The other mossberg chokes didn't even fit. I had a gunsmith check it. He said the same thing as IC told you. I ordered an IC and it did not fit. I shipped the barrel to IC and they did the same for me. The second newer SA-28 has no issues. I heard that Mossberg corrected the machining discrepencies and all is well now. The guns shoot great. They do shoot consistently low with aftermarket chokes as well.

I'll have to try the tubes that I haven't used. The modified tube that came in the gun screwed out easily, the full tube screwed in and out the same and an aftermarket Briley XFULL screwed in fine. Come to think of it the imp.cylinder screws in fine as I use that during cleaning.

That's excellent for a 28. That will kill a bird all day long. Thanks for sharing about how Indian Creek went well out of their way to get you going. That is great customer service.

What item number is on the choke you got?   I want to get a 520 or 525 to try in mine.  I’m shooting 9s as well.  I have the same gun as you.  The sa-28

I know this is an old post, but who would have ever thought you could get patterns like that with a 28 gauge. TSS changed the landscape for turkey hunting. Excellent pattern, I would hunt with your set up all day long.

I just got an IC for my new SA28, and it won’t screw in.  I emailed IC and they said they would either refund me, or make me one if I send them my barrel, but that their standard BER Mobil does not fit the SA28.

Yup, that's what I did. A Briley XFull will screw right in, at least it did on my gun.

My IC needed to be fit by them on my SA-28. I am shooting the .520 and will never ever take it out. I saw the performance with #9's on Monday as my wife and I doubled with my gun, lol. Mine was a perfect 30 yard shot and instant obliteration. Her shot was 52 steps and 2/3 flops, it was dead before she got there. It was impressive. I did pattern #7's out of the same set up and patterns great. No excuses about the gun for me, Darn IT!!! Good luck and God Bless. Al

I ordered a TruLock that screwed right in, so it sounds like the IC chokes are the only ones that don't fit. Got a chance to pattern it a little last night, and so far I'm loving this little gun.

Like I posted before, my older SA-28 had thread issues and the new one didnt. The IC threads are deeper and that is where I think my issue was. Performance wise, I think the IC, in my opinion, outperforms all the chokes I tried. I am using the .520 in mine and bought a .525 to try in the wifes gun. She shot it at 25 yards with the factory full and said' Thats perfect for me. I have never shot one past that, so leave it".  I dont argue with her, lol. But we shot a double, mine was 30 yards and
she had a safety/bolt issue and I switched guns with her and she shot her bird at 52 steps with my gun. 2 flops and dead before she got to it. Mine was a chip shot and there wasnt a square inch of skull left in tact. Most devastating I ever saw. Her shot was way more impressive and I truly believe that it would not have been successful if it wasnt for the TSS/choke combo. I am not a name brand wh*re, I tried 5 chokes in my gun and the IC .520 with #9 TSS was the best pattern every time. And now it is field tested, I am supremely confident with it. Just my  :z-twocents: guys.. Al

I agree with Zelmo, once you get an IC to fit you'll be all set. My SA-28 with the.525 is great from 20 to 40. They're all too tight under 20.

I bought one also. Encountered the same thing.

I just put it in and used cutting fluid, went in and out with it for about a month while using good gloves.

They all fit great now. ????

Pretty much the same here on #1, the older one. The new one had no issues. I will say that the older gun with the .520 IC choke is a true killer. I will never change that combo as long as I am shooting 18 g/cc shot. Al

Thru out the years and a pile of turkey guns when you stick to the big names you get consistent choke dimensions  .
Alot of these "cheaper " guns have off sized dimensions it's just part of making them cheaper and in other countries .
That being said I bought a new 410 turkey gun went to a major choke builder set
Up my lil turkey killer and had to try 3 chokes to get a xfull in there .. knowing I would be shooting doves with it also I went thru 5 more chokes to get a full set of imp cyl ,Mod and Full choke set. This was because the major diameter ( largest outside diameter)of the inside threads ( female ) was to small . I also believe that going from metric to English is at times problematic in foreign countries.
