Title: Red Dot Question
Post by: Gen.27:3 on May 07, 2021, 10:12:05 AM
Guys,

I am going to move to a reflex-type Red Dot sight for next year. What brand and model do you guys prefer and why? I am currently looking at a Vortex Venom and a Burris Fastfire, but I am open to anything. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Venom and  Fastfire are for sure the favorites.  Both have a great lifetime warranty.  It all depends on what MOA you want.. I think the fastfire comes in a 3 or 8.. and the Venom has a 4?...not sure.
I have four different FastFire III sights .. and they have all been great.

I put a bushnell on my gun this year, I'm very pleased with it. Cost effective and has stood up to everything so far.

I installed a reflex type sight this year and got along with it very well.  I went with the swampfox kingslayer.  I hadn't heard about them until reading on OG about them.  I went with the plain 3MOA red dot.  If I would happen to get another, I would get the green circle dot as there are a lot of guys that indicate that it works well with astigmatism.  If I get my sight turned up too bright it will star burst on me due to my slight astigmatism.

I killed one bird at 40yds in MO, one bird at 25yds and another bird that was at 10yds and busted me moving gun over to him so he got smacked on the run here in Iowa.

I dropped my gun on some pretty good rock climbing around down in the ozarks and the sight held zero just fine.

I'd just make sure to get one that you don't have to take the sight off to change batteries.

I have been very satisfied with both my Fastfire 3, and my Bushnell Trs25. Both have the 3moa dots. Truth be told, i think i would prefer a slightly larger dot on my turkey gun,but that's just my personal preference. Battery life has been good in both, both have held their zero. For some reason i can pick up the dot much faster in a tube type dot than a reflex, why i don't know. Most brand name red dots made today are pretty good, I don't think you will have any problems with any of them.

You really need to look through them yourself. Different filters for shape and coatings for reflection look different to different people.

Generally a more expensive model with a shaped reticle dot will work best as long as the aiming point is small.

Sightmark mini shot M-spec did really well for me this year.

What is the preferred MOA dot size?

3 MOA

Check out the Swampfox Kingslayer as well.  I have two of the red circle dots and love them.

I've both the 3 and the 8 FF3. I prefer the 8. The 3 just looks to small to me.

I'm partial to the Holosuns, I have 3 of them, motion on, solar with battery backup, 2 are 3 moa and my turkey gun sports a 8 moa with a ring. Also own a FF3.

I've owned a half dozen of the Venom's and FF3's and I like them both equally. I like a 3moa dot or one close to that size. Can't go wrong with either of those lightweight, compact sights!

Same here.  My son has the 3, and I have the 8.  I think I prefer the 8.

Thanks so much. Never owned one before and been thinking about putting one on my wife's gun. I'm thinking the larger MOA dot might help her.
