Title: Turkeys located for this weekend's youth day in NC.
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on March 29, 2021, 03:07:24 PM
Well I've located multiple gobblers at 3 locations so far for Saturday's North Carolina's youth hunt with my son.  Our youth hunts have been 100% successful on the first day the past 3 years.  Since he's 16 he can't take advantage of youth days in Virginia anymore.  Youth season we typically have opportunities for doubles if I had a gun.  That mysteriously vanishes when regular season opens...

That sounds awesome. I'll be taking my 6 year old with me for his first mentored youth hunt this year. He's so excited. Hopefully we will have some birds figured out by then.

Looks like it will be 28 degrees Saturday morning.  I thought duck season was over...

It was another successful, almost textbook, youth day turkey hunt in the turkey infested fields and woods of Gates, NC.  Gobbling started at 6:22 AM and lasted till about 6:45 AM.  I must have heard 5-6 gobblers in different locations within a mile of where we were.  Fly down cackles and yelping were plentiful.  The Tom we killed was not one of those gobbling.  This bird I had seen in the same place a few times during the week.  Always with one hen and one Jake.  I knew it wasn't a large bird that I wanted to kill for the contest and since it was the only mature gobbler in this spot I felt it best to take him on youth day.  I have targeted larger birds that I've seen in pairs with big flocks of hens, and I was saving them for a potential double with my son.  We set up decoys near the spot where I had seen this bird and made sure my son had a clear shot in the direction of preference.  I did a little soft calling with the diaphragm but mostly waited.  The Tom came out where I thought he would and went immediately to the Jake decoy and began the beat down.  My son shot the bird at about 25 yards and that is the end of the story.  Really kinda boring but when I take my son I try hard for a quick, successful hunt because, like most teenagers today, he gets bored really quickly.  I won't go into detail about my trials and tribulations in that department.  Pictures are provided.  Left spur was the longest.

In Gates County.  Northeast corner of NC.  I live right across the line in Suffolk, VA so I hunt in Virginia as well.  But most of the property I hunt is in NC.

Very nice! Been awhile since I've been on a quick morning hunt like that. But I understand..those quick hunts can be kinda boring sometimes.  Congrats to you both!
