Title: Leftover wood flooring
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on March 27, 2021, 07:20:54 PM
I have a friend that installs high end wood flooring.  I asked him what he does with the leftovers and he says they just throws leftover wood away.  He said today that he had some Acacia leftover and would have some Cumaru to toss soon.  The boards are 3/4 inch thick.  Can this wood be of use for making turkey calls?   I'm sure he gets other exotic woods from time to time, but today was the first time I asked him about it.

I'm not a call maker, but 3/4" might be to thin. That being said it might work for strikers if it is long enough.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe box call tops if you run across the right wood.  He said the board pieces may be a foot or more from time-to-time.  Cumaru is hard and dense, but I've seen some box call paddles made from desert Ironwood.

Paddles or strikers.

most like 1in to give a little wiggle room for mistakes but 3/4 would work if the one side was not ruff and and didnt need any thing but a little sanding

These are all leftover finished boards that were being laid for floors.  I may post pictures when I get some.  I imagine I can get several different types of woods from him.  It all depends on what woods he's using in his jobs.
