Title: The Happy Eggshell Challenge Cup
Post by: GobbleNut on March 14, 2021, 10:24:13 PM
Okay fellers, here's the deal.  Me and old eggshell and happy have been goin' at it for years on this forum.  Although we have never laid eyes on each other, I think it would be safe to say that we have become long-distance friends over time.  I am hoping all of the Snood Snatchers (or whoever we end up being) will join in and keep this in the light-hearted spirit it is intended to be.

This little challenge we are doing is just some good fun between friends.  I am hoping all of the team will take part in our little bet and join in here with some good-natured ribbing.  These two are really good guys, but they have mistakenly assumed that the ineptitude I have displayed over the years will somehow be contagious to the rest of the team.  I don't want to put any pressure on my teammates, but it is pretty much up to you guys to prove them wrong.   ;D

We kind of hashed out some details in the "choosing a team name and captain" thread, so you can take a look there if you wanna.  We'll clarify as needed as we go along.  In the meantime, rest assured that I will change the rules as needed throughout the contest to make sure we end up winning!   ;D

So, what's the wager. I've tried to pay attention but I've been in and out. Ahhh, I don't care what the wager is...I'm in. Nobody beats photoshop!!!

I typically take good birds here but now that I've open my mouth and am being competitive in a snood snatching team, and now even more so here with this side bet,  I'll likely not even see a bird ! (Insert early excuse above)

Happy offered me .0000001 as my contract for the team (I had mentioned I would settle for six figures beforehand).  I don't know if that's in dollars or cents, but regardless, I have committed my entire contract amount to the two of them if they should win the bet by some gigantic fluke of good fortune.

Don't worry, if they do happen to win, I will cover that whole bet myself.  You guys are off the hook!

Thank god!

I'd have to take a loan out. Us gov employees don't make much, so this turkey hunting gimmick is actually gathering supper.

Can we start season early for a -10point deduction? Asking for a friend...

What do you mean start early, like 4:00 am. Be careful roost shooting, it might be a buzzard and if you shoot it you gotta count it  :funnyturkey:

Any Calvin & Hobbes fans out there? This "challenge" sounds a lot like Calvin Ball to me!

Why does this not surprise me? I kinda expect that out of a bunch of limb lifting, 70 yard shooting, tent dwellin, fake turkey totin, nuckledraggers. Eggshell I believe they are attempting to drag us into the mud and beat us through experience.

Anybody want to try to guess how many times my left knee goes out of socket this season? It is approaching 40 times since July 27th of this past year.

To the left or to the right? We hope not backwards? We can fix that with some duct tape and a few 2x4's. Seen it done once with a fellow that busted his ankle falling from a deerstand. He did great on those crutches till he hit the waxed floor in the emergency room.....

No worries, there will be none of the above from me. I just take a turkey call or 3, a shotgun and some shells and my stunning good looks when I turkey hunt.

Left knee, left side of bone only dislocating. Whole knee shifts around when I squat then though, using soap on a rope a lot, reminds me of my younger years in jail.

Well, I hope it starts to mend. My wife works in therapy and her top 3 things are diet(no carbs, additives ect, meat protein), excersize and staying at a healthy weight. If she can get people to do that then they almost always improve. Getting them to do it is the frustrating part for her.

I am on that basic diet now and exercising as I can. I sure miss lifting weights, my equipment is going to waste.

And feeder commandos. Picture this, a wood shelter (called a blind, but looking more like a small house), a messaging  recliner, a big screen TV with headphones, A light that flashes when the feeder goes off and a permanent gun bench so you don't even have to hold your gun and of course an optional electronic call you can run with a remote in the recliner. True "A" team Old school hunting. Us poor hillbillys are just thrilled to have a moth ridden camo shirt, a rusty old single shot, a hand me down mouth call ( found in the pocket of a man at the hospital where our wife works as a janitor) and an old box call we found along the road with one side busted. Still we'll kill our old tom, and he be a biggun

You forgot about their laptop computer with satellite internet capabilities and that is hooked up to the gun on a special remote control gun rest so they can aim the gun and tap the screen on the cell phone to get it to shoot so they don't have to risk one of the floorboards in the "Blind" creaking.

Now you've gone too far!  That's just not sporting!
...And I ALWAYS make sure those floorboards are glued down so they won't creak.  And another thing, you've always got to check that feeder to make sure it is full before you get in your shooting house and turn on the TV to watch the latest turkey huntin' YouTube videos while you're waiting for those gobblers to come to your perfect electronic calling!   :toothy9:

Man you guys have it good. Once season starts if my truck will start I plan on sliding out to one of my spots in WV. Its gonna be ugly, utv's running round everywhere with 22-250's loaded and ready. The fields will all be covered and any gobbler that opens his mouth is gonna have bullets smacking the tree around him. But I will persevere and snoop around with my single shot, open choked shotgun, clothes so old and torn I could be accused of baiting. With a little luck I might be able to "yep up" an onery old gobbler to within shootin range and take care of it. I may just decide to go to public ground just to avoid the craziness. That will involve a lot of uphill hiking but at least I can get some peace and quiet. Yep, the odds are stacked but I just think we might be able to pull the upset.

Heck, we might as well make you two guys honorary members of our team!  You guys on here more than most of our team members.  That's okay,...makes it easier for us to keep track of you two!   ;D

I think I'm gonna check with Shannon and see if he'll let us use a couple of your gobblers in our team score.  I think there is a rule that if a couple of Yahoos post more on your team site than the team members, you can use them as "substitutes".  ...kinda like the water boys at the end of the bench...    :toothy12: :toothy9: ;D

Well, it was horrid turkey conditions...overcast, cold, windy.
Happened to strike a double gobble pair after fly down. Set up doing wayyyy too much clipping for two, in a pinch, on a field edge where I took a bird last year. Same .25acre my friend, the land owner, slap missed a monster at 25 yards. The birds didn't do a lot of gobbling until they were near, and truthfully I had just called too much(fresh out the gate opening day flub). The next thing I know, there's 4 gobblers trying to come from behind us, that's we're they KNEW the calling was taking place. This bird flew through the thick and landed at 15yards near the decoys and immediately stood tall, peeping into my "newly made, made from scratch, blind-to-hide-two fat-boys". I Knew it wasn't but another half second of this posture and his next move was flying the coop with a piercing cluck! I told my buddy better take him now, and boy...he didn't miss this season! One in hand better two in bush type thing. After that, we couldn't get the others to commit to entering the feild from our blindside after a few hour waiting game .

So happy to be a part of this hunt. Everything can still go wrong and you pull it out.

the new Dawkins shorty had them on a string .

A-TEam that can't decide at 70 snood raider mermen is still not on the board. "Almost" is in horseshoes and hand grenades, boys!
I'll go tomorrow and try try again in a county two hours south of this one that's one hour north...Savvy?

Thanks fellers!
Well...we won't be on the board today, either. Got up at 4am, made breakfast, washed my stank, stepped outside......raining!? WTH didn't see that in any forecast! Needless to say, I'm not going, I'll just go to work. May slip out this week a morning or two, if we can return back to the 70,80,90°s...
Every single season, opening weekend we get some front that you can set your watch by and it dips down in temp, turkeys go all but silent here when that happens after two months of gorgeous early summer like weather. Dreary, cold, overcast, windy, wet days are putrid in La Florida for the gobble.
As much as I like turkeys and the woods, I'd personally rather hear them and have better interaction.

Imma need a few more days...
On the bright side, I used the cheap digital wallyworld scale yesterday on my friends bird. Worked great. I tested it on a measured gallon of water. It's surprisingly dead accurate...who would've guessed?!

Just stood out on my back deck and listened to 3 gobblers going nuts. One right on the edge of my property. Then two owls started arguing making him gobble even more. Been a good morning. Even though I have permission to hunt the neighboring property these birds are safe. I just like listening to them and calling them in occasionally.

I am the same way, it's not that I won't kill one at the house property, but I hold them for reserve if I need one late season. In 33 years I have killed one spring gobbler here. The family has 1,000 acres about 10 minutes away, so I leave my house birds for entertainment. Occasionally someone comes in from the neighbor's and gets close, but it is a long tough hike to my place and out, so not often. All the locals know not to tread on my place.

Our season started today in Nebraska for archery.  Really wanted to take tomorrow off from work. Since it will be the first day this week that no rain is in the forecast but couldn't get it off. So will be at it on Saturday morning.

Yes,....Good Luck to all who are getting started with their hunts!  I've still got a couple of weeks before my first attempts.  I expect there to be a few gobblers on our score board by then!

(...It won't even bother me if our challengers Happy and Eggshell luck into a gobbler or two, either!)  ;D :icon_thumright:

Please someone shoot a gobbler so the rest of your team knows what they look like.  You all know turkey vultures are protected, right. I heard someone tried to fan up a group of buzzards on a dead horse.

If I can't post a bird in that many days in these places, I just need to quit! Lol

Pic of work...
Big gobbler in burn unit next day.

Hope to chime in plenty soon this week coming. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210401/ec990a1f4bc6586300bed14becc23b23.jpg)

Reminds me of a time that a town i lived near had a huge crow issue. They where roosting in the town by the thousands. After a few months some enterprising fellow pitched the idea of lacing their roost tree with concussion grenades to scare them off once they got settled in for the night. The town approved it and gave fair warning to all the residents. Well this fellow waited until the dead of night and the trees were covered in roosting crows before he touched it off. What he and the towns people were not prepared for was the reaction that startled birds have when something like this happens. There were plenty of unhappy citizens when they went to get in their cars to go to work the next morning.:)

Everyone's a champion before the game.... it won't be long and the big dogs will be unleashed.

They were really on the move the last couple days here. I think the flocks are breaking up and the old birds are establishing their turf. I have seen them in the fields and I sat and listened to one old gobbler work his way across a ridge for a half mile. I saw a dandy in the pasture field Saturday, he played that game all last spring and I gave him a pass. He looked pretty good through the binocs, so I may just pull his card this spring.

Well, today I found out contractors are starting to move in to  work on the house the week I planned for Ky and I will be heading to South Dakota maybe as soon as early May, to visit our daughter we haven't seen since the whole covid thing started (December 2019). So my seasons are gonna be messed up.  I doubt that hurts me to much, but I am gonna keep it as an excuse.....nahhh ! I haven't scouted to any degree in years, maybe this year I'll actually get out and find a couple old birds to pattern before season. The last 10-15 years I pretty much just figure em out as I hunt. More fun that way. But with all this money on the line, I might have to set my mind to it a little more.

I see gobbleNut posted a scoring instructional thread. So here are the scoring rules for us.... The other team, see Gobblenut's guidelines,  for eggshell and happy, Whatever the heck we feel like doing. You'll just have to trust us :funnyturkey:

In all honesty all those parameters is why I don't enter contest. I just am not into scoring my birds enough to take all the extra effort. I typically weigh them and may do a quick spur and beard measure, but unless they are noticeably large I won't measure at all. I toss everything but the meat.  Beard spurs and tail all go to the back field for coyote dinner.

I will score my birds, but don't expect any big layout of pics and stuff. You'll most likely get a couple pics and my word. This is just fun for me to have some good natured jawing with forum friends. I do reiterate , Jakes count double.  :TooFunny:

Yup, its fun to finally have a competition that is laid back and actually fun. Some good humor and laughing with no real worries about the outcome. I feel this may be my last round cause I ain't into taking it as seriously as some do. Gonna go out with flair and style. Kinda like Jack Beaguard in the movie my name is nobody.   Except I kinda like the role of nobody. Get others in a pickle and stand back to watch the show. Guess that makes you the Jack Beaguard eggshell.

;D  With the wind blowing 50 miles an hour the entire time, I couldn't have heard a gobbler respond if he was in a tree I was sitting under!  Then again, even when it is calm, there has to be a gobbler in the same county you are hunting to hear one.  I'm not all that confident there was in a few of the WMA,s..  If there were any, they were the kind that don't make tracks or leave droppings.   ???
(Actually, my woes were a bit more complicated than that,...hunter and landowner interference were major contributors, as well,...but that is a another long and sordid story)

Well seems like you have plenty of time on your hands so give us the dirt. We may not care but we can pretend like we do!

Okay, you asked for it.  Short version of chapter one is your typical public-land, other hunters screwing things up story.  I had gobblers roosted, was about to set up on them on the first morning, and had a couple of guys show up.  I had talked to these guys, told them I was hunting there, and planned to go to a particular location,...but here's the kicker.  They told me that they had several private parcels in the area that they could have gone to hunt that had plenty of birds but they wanted to hunt the WMA first!  This was a very small area and the one roost site was the only one I had found in my day and a half of scouting.  Yet, rather than go to one of the private parcels they had to hunt, these guys headed right into the area I had already told them i was planning on hunting!  Honestly, in my 55 or so years of spring gobbler hunting, I have never seen a more glaring example of poor "turkey hunting etiquette" displayed.

Short version of chapter two:  Went to another WMA and immediately found a flock of birds with two big gobblers in the group.  Unfortunately, they were right on the boundary of the WMA and fairly close to a house on a private property.  When the turkeys saw me drive by, they headed toward the WMA.  As I drove down to the WMA boundary and the parking area, a woman walked out of the house and, more or less, gave me the "stink eye" as I drove by.  I parked in the WMA, circled around into the vicinity the birds had headed and making sure to give the house a wide berth.  I was a bit surprised when I soon got a response to my calling and apparent interest from the gobblers in coming my way.  About that time, someone at the house fired a shot!  Now, I'm not at all certain what exactly happened there, but I later found out from talking to some other hunters that the people that lived at the house did not like hunters.  My conclusion from all of it was that the homeowners saw me drive down and park in the WMA, heard the gobblers start gobbling and heading towards my calling, and intentionally went out and fired a gun to scare off the turkeys,...which as far as I could tell worked very well since I never heard or saw the birds again after that.

Oh well,...some times the turkey gods just give you hints when things are not meant to be....   ::)

"Don't like hunters", but choose to live by a WMA! No different than the dolts who move out to the country and then complain about the smells!

(Actually, my woes were a bit more complicated than that,...hunter and landowner interference were major contributors, as well,...but that is a another long and sordid story)

I had the same woman in Florida once, she certainly gets around. We were hunting an orange grove and soon as she seen us park the truck she was out in the yard messing up the hunt. It was a small grove and the owners made a deal, shoot the hogs and you can hunt turkeys. The broad ran the hogs off that evening. We left and never went back.

The public land jerks suck bad enough at home, but when you travel and get it that doubles up the suck. Part of me really hates giving in and letting them win, but more of me doesn't want the conflict and so I do just as you did, move on. Did you go back later? I would guess they were messing with you intentionally, because you were out of state. They saw you scouting and knew you would only be around a few days and so ran you off just to protect the spot for locals. Maybe this is the time you post a special thread online and tell exactly where it is :funnyturkey:. they'll never get dibs on it again.

That is why I have hired outfitters in some cases. However, in that part of the country it's hard to find one that doesn't use feeders. We always insist we control our hunt concerning calling and set up too, that weeds out about 75% of them. Some offer the semi-guided. It's always a crap shoot on public land. I was lucky when I was working I got to know a lot of people in a lot of states and those contacts were pretty good at leading me to hunting spots.

Was able to get one down this morning on public. Had a bunch of birds that was roosted off the public. Sat up in the far back corner of the place. All the birds that was in front of me gobbling on private flew down and went farther on it. About an hour after flydown heard a gobble in the private cornfield to the northeast. He must have been roosted down on the river. Called a couple times and just waited. He ended up at 12yrds next to the decoys. Question for the council!!
Took a new turkey hunter out this morning on his property. Have had permission to hunt this place for about 10 years and just never have. Anyways the results of my work this morning has resulted in one dead jake( neighboring landowner) and a clean miss on a longbeard by my shooter. Anyways I was hoping to reward myself with either a whopper meal or chic a Fila spicy chicken meal if I got my guy a bird. However I am hungry now and starting to feel like I did my job pretty well for both the neighboring landowner and my landowner. Am I justified and going ahead and treating myself to a meal?

Go ahead and get that whopper, you earned it....you can use my tree as justification.

Here is my kill and score - 1 ash tree, weight approx 2,000 lbs, beard 40FT tall ; spurs (1st limbs) right 12", left 24" I haven't done this but one or twice in 48 years of turkey hunting, but I done it today.

Had turkzilla all figured out and was right. he came off the roost and headed my way. When he hit the field edge he started across just out of range, but two soft yelps on a gobblenut special
and he turned and came strutting. Only to stop perfectly in line with an ash tree 10 feet in front of me. I waited what seemed like an hour, but likely 15 minutes and his head and neck cleared at 35 yards.
I put the bead on him and squeezed. when I looked up he was still standing there looking dumbfounded. So I bead down again, but he runs and flies. I kicked myself all morning
why I didn't let him take a couple more steps.

Oh well, eggshell. It happens, as I told my shooter this morning. Just don't let it happen to much or the gobblers will start to get nervous around hen sounds and turn gay.

Man everything is quiet, is everyone holding on to birds scores to dump all at once or is it a tough season/seasons for everyone.
Here in OHio it has been really quiet and not many active gobblers. Kentucky was the same way. I had to take a couple days off for some home repairs and medical
appointments. I'll get home today about mid morning, maybe I will slip out for a mid morning hunt.

My season just got cut down last night. We are putting a new roof and full front porch on the house starting in two weeks. My wife wants to go to
South Dakota to visit our daughter before then, so I have one week left to hunt. Now I'm over being picky. It comes it dies.

Sounds like some of us are having "issues" this spring...   :newmascot:
New Mexico report:  Just got back from my third round here in NM,...three trips out, and two have been cut short by weather that has been
unreal!  Been caught in two major snow storms in my three trips out, and when it isn't snowing, the wind has been howling.
All in all, this spring has had the most adverse hunting conditions I have seen in decades.  Hoping things settle down in the last part of the season!
...But at least I am getting to go!  ;D

Alright here is one for you fellers. I am never one to shy away from a good laugh even at my expense.

Friday was a rough day. Had an employee quit a short time ago and I inherited his projects. It was pretty clear he had checked out before he actually quit. Anyways my crew was scheduled to work this weekend on a delicate task this weekend and we had to have it completed before Monday and people were back in the buildings. In the morning I received a text from my procurement guy asking how upset my superintendent would be if materials deliveries were delivered a few days late. My response was " a lot of sentence enhancers and adjectives" I then sent another text saying "and lots of f%$$#@"involved. Anyhow that message got sent to the wrong person which was a bit humorous as well.
Anyways by Friday night I was ready to hunt. I only had two hours of daylight in the morning but I needed to get out. After a pretty extensive effort I managed to get to my listening spot before daylight only to get greeted by silence. However about a mile away I could hear two gobblers letting loose about a mile away on another extremely steep mountain top. I picked up shop and moved in their direction quickly. Getting to the base I sized it up and began my ascent. It was rough going. I am talking about a 700 foot rise in elevation while only moving forward 300 yards. I know time is of the essence and push to the top. When I get up there I find a good spot in case they are close and started some cutting. One of the gobblers cut me off and then the other hit a few seconds later about a hundred yards out from him. I stayed tight and felt them out. They answered everything with enthusiasm but would not close. I quickly tried a few different angles and nothing worked. After a while they completed shut down. I glanced at my watch and it was time to go.
I figured someone heard the action and tried to sneak in but didn't hear any calling.
I mulled things over in the evening and develop a plan of attack. The plan was to scale the mountain again. Confirm where the were roosted and then wait for them to fly down, and then sneak in and call them back to the roost site. I figured they were hard hunted Tom's and would feel more comfortable coming to a spot they had just left.
My plan worked to perfection. Daylight sound me right near the chest of the mountain waiting. Tom #1 opened up directly above me about 100 yards up the mountain and about 30 yards from the lip. Tom #2 was about 100 yards to my right further along the crest. I stood silently and let them belt it out, waiting on flydown.
Tom #1 hit the ground, gobbled a few times and started moving away. I'm over as quickly and silently to the crest and slowly moved over. I saw the tree I figured he was rooster in and slid in close about 25 yards from the tree. Visibility wasn't the greatest but I had a few good lanes to about 25 yards. It was gonna be tight quarters but thats my game anyways. I let things settle down a few minutes and listened to him gobble again about 150 yards out. Some yelps brought an immediate response so sat and waited to see what he would do. He gobbled a few time and then his last gobble was further away still. I started yelping at him and some cutts and he answered immediately. I followed it up with a few yelps on a trumpet, he answered and I shut up. A few minutes later he gobbled about 100 yards out. A good booming gobble that caused my heart rate to pick up and for me to turn my sight on and switch my chew to my left cheek, (if your hunting with me that is a sign that things are about to get tropical).
I scatched the leaves a bit and gives some soft purrs. No response. It was silent for a few and the I picked up the spit and drum to my left a bit. Adjusting my gun I caught a quick glimpse of the upper two thirds of a full tail fan. A few seconds later it was a flash of moment and a big white head was sticking up behind the branches of a downed tree. He was looking hard but my dot was covering the opening to the right so I was ready. On cue he started creeping from my left to right looking. I could only see his head and neck but it was enough.
He walked right into my dot and I squeezed the trigger.
I let him flop for a few and then slowly walked over to take a look. Rolling him over I was shocked to see a short stubby beard, nubby spurs and a most full fan. Two feathers on the right side are still short. Packing him out I thought he felt a bit porky so I weighed him.
The official stats are 17 pounds, 10 ounces, 3/8" spurs and a 5" beard. I done shot me a super jake fellows. I wouldn't have pulled the trigger if I had known but he gobbled like a big boy and what I saw of the fan said he was a big boy so he got it.
The jokes on me and I am chuckling, but 17 lbs of turkey is 17lbs of turkey.
Thats what I am telling myself to feel better anyways

...And I am familiar with the feeling of having what was thought to be a wise, old, long-spurred gobbler turn into a jake, Happy.  It's been a while, but I can remember that feeling of walking up to a well-fought, hard-won "longbeard" and going "WTF"?!!   :D

Work is what it is. Complaining won't change it so I will just plow ahead. Enjoy what you have you retired fellows. You all aren't gonna see my cards till after the whistle. Just found this to be humorous and worth a good laugh. I forgot to add that after about 10 minutes after I shot him some feller came in and was yelping on his pot call about 150 yards from me. That was worth a chuckle too.

Well, it's all on you as our final batter Happy. I'm done and won't be scoring anymore. Two decent birds at home in Ohio, but Ky was a crap pit this year. I still at least had a swing and miss down there. I let a really nice gobbler walk the second day in Ky, thinking my buddy would whack him and I'd pick off his running mate. Sure that worked out as planned, not. My buddy decides to adjust the gun not knowing that no 2 was there and got busted. I wish I'd dropped the hammer after 6 days of total crap. Three of the six days we never heard a gobble. I'm off to South Dakota to visit my daughter later this week.

I'm here again now,...just got back from two weeks in the upper mid-west.  Turned out to be a total fiasco of a trip, including a car wreck (nothing serious to anybody or anything except the car) that ultimately resulted in very little turkey hunting getting done.  A planned three-week trip turned into two, and with nine of those days spent on the road.

Plans for hunting about twelve days turned into six,...with three of those days sitting in a cabin watching it rain all day long.  The three good days were spent just trying to find a gobbler to hunt,...which ultimately failed miserably.  Bottom line is I didn't hear a turkey gobble the entire trip!  It seems that sometimes the turkey gods just don't want things to work out...   ::)

I hope everybody else ended their seasons on a much better note than I!

Saw turkey for the first time all season yesterday, mostly hen way to far away and one hen and tom flying after person on adjoining property shot and they flew away from that area. Going out tomorrow if not pouring and going out Sunday till about 10-10:30 and heading back to town for church. Monday is the last day and the best looking weather wise.

Dang Gobblenut, That sucks. I sadly can relate as I have had more than one trip go bad. I wouldn't call this a banner year by any means. My usually old reliable turkey spots in Ky were total bust. We had people boat in and hike up the mountain and camp right on where we usually kill turkeys. They were living with them and they'd set in camp and take off like a bullet soon as a bird gobbled. We hit some new ground and by the time we figured it out we were out of time. I passed a good bird our first day because I promised my buddy first shot and he didn't get a shot off.....arrrggg I shoulda killed the bird. We got a new farm this year and we total pooched it as every day we hunted was an off day and the land owner would say two days ago they were everywhere. I finally got a a shot at a bird there and of course it was in horse hair thick brush. I thought I had a hole to shoot through, but was wrong. The bird just ran out into a pasture looked bewildered and flew off. Thank God things held true at home. After killing a tree on opening day I Killed a my first the next day ( the double bearded bird, but light weight. I then hunted with a buddy or two and took a day off then finished off my Ohio hunting on the first Friday with a nice 21+lber. After that I helped a couple others and then took off for 10 days with the wife to visit our daughter in South Dakota and the black hills. I have friends out there and the plan was if I located birds I would try and hunt a little while still doing things with the family. I gave up after a couple days trying to locate birds, as all the locals said they had shut up. I never even bought a tag. The only birds I saw was in Iowa while we spent a couple days there. I just got home last Sunday and started remodeling the house MOnday. Not one of my more productive springs but I had plenty of fun. Honestly, this is the first time in 48 years I actually bailed on half a season. I never even finished Ky. So I only have two birds to score one 65+ points and one 60+ pts, somewhere I posted them. Now some "Happy" Fool may have done better but he ain't saying nothing.....hmmm

Sounds like we have all had interesting seasons. Later part has been better, got some relief to a toe that was making it miserable to walk the first part of the season, I will be getting that operated on soon, just waiting on a date from the doctor. Glad you got to see some family anyway eggshell, I was supposed to go visit family this year but I won't be able to til all the covid junk has ended.

GobbleNut glad to hear nobody was hurt.

Allright, seasons over for everyone i believe. But before we move any further I will just say this.
Any turkey called to the gun and killed cleanly is a trophy. I don't care what it scores personally. Some of the highest personal satisfaction birds in my life won't measure up well against a tape measure. I find it an injustice that a guy can get up at 2 am, climb a mountain and work his rear end of to kill a bird that doesn't measure up well and some other fellow can just blunder to his blind(manage to not get lost) and wack a huge bird that has been fed corn all year and be considered the better man. But I say that being a fellow who values hard work over results and society isn't necessarily geared that way anymores. So Gobblenut cudos to you on your Tom's. Its impressive what you manage to do there in the mountains of Mexico.  I know it ain't easy even if they are Meriams.

I am prepared to just drop the whole thing. I already got what I came for and that was the opportunity to laugh and have some fun. Winning or loosing meant nothing to me and didn't change a thing in how I went about my hunting. To interact with some fellow turkey hunters was the point for me. Regardless of how it shaped out in the end it is satisfying to me. Don't get me wrong, we can still continue if everyone wants a final score but it really isn't important in the overall scheme of things. It was fun to harass and irritate ya'll.

I been killing the Saugeye (hybrid walleye) can I get some bonus points for them? If you give my wife a choice she'll say go catch Saugeye over killing turkeys, their pretty close to equal in my favorite things to do. I can catch and keep six of them a day. I'll probably keep about 200 this summer and fall. Stock up the freezer, have a fish fry and I give some to some veterans.

Happy, I will conceded the contest, wouldn't want anyone ( wink at gobblenut) to get their feelings hurt . We know what we done and that's good enough. Hey my opening day tree scored at least 150 pts.  :turkey2:

Yeah, now that it is all over with and the ribbing has been suspended (at least for a day or two), I say we call it a draw!  Honestly, I never figured our little contest would ever get to the "who scored what" level anyhow.  For me, the contest (even the main one) has always been more about the exchange of rhetoric between OG members than it has been about scoring turkeys from around the country that, when truly examined, is like comparing apples and oranges.  The back and forth between everybody has been good fun.  Even though the contest is over, I hope it continues!

Oh it will. I was particularly impressed with eggshells willingness to announce the arrival of turkey season by shooting a tree. Thats sporting right there. Let them know your gunning for them before you start taking names.

well he didn't take the warning shot very seriously, because I killed his running buddy the next day and then I went back with one of my other buddies and he  killed him a few days after that....I guess they're just not to bright in Ohio.

My second bird was also quite satisfying. This one old bird would get on this log road and not budge and he had a view for everything around. He would never come to it on a regular time and I tried for three years to trip him up....well this year I was at the right time and place and I settled the score. I like killing them old buggers like that. Sooner or later they all make a fatal mistake. That's the sweet part of having your own land behind locked gates, you can chase the same bird over different seasons.

I like the easy ones too, but I love even more hunting the tough old nemesis more. I get almost giddy when someone says, I got this old bird I bet you can't kill, come try. Most of them don't understand that a new call and approach means more than any special skill level. I have carried my share of impossible birds out, and I just chuckle knowing it's not me but just the fact I was a new sound and approach. Free gobblers, Yeah !

Oh yeah, there ain't no fans, decoys or blinds involved....me, a call and an old bird is the game.

I can't say I had a second round with any gobblers this year. I had one day that I just managed to screw about everything up. Had a crack at a bird right off the roost and botched it. Then moved on and got another match going with another Tom. He made a move that as soon as he did it I knew my goose was cooked. I probably could have pulled a crawl and shoot but thats not my style. So they won that day. I tried gobbler #1 on the next day but he wasn't home. Another participant was found a while later so I guess he hopefully makes it to next year. I had a lot of fun though. I remember sometime this year someone posted that they thought turkey hunting was on of the most overcomplicated sports out there. After mulling that over a bit I have to respectfully disagree. Sure there are days when it seems impossible not to kill one. You get the right gobbler on the right day and its ridiculously simple. But when you take just a call and shotgun you are going to learn that those days are few and far between and you better figure out how to deal with some complications if you want to be consistently successful. Granted a lot of methods and equipment are being sold to take a lot of the complicated out of it but for me personally the sport looses its appeal. Sometimes we have to loose in order to learn how to win.
