Title: 835 advice
Post by: PaulLS on April 27, 2017, 02:25:51 PM
I've been shooting my 835 (24") for several years with the factory choke and 3-1/2" Rem Nitros #5.  My son and I have knocked down 5 birds with 5 shots (including one at a range I don't even want to mention), so it obviously works.  However, after coming across this site and reading a number of posts, I realized that I was not taking full advantage of what the gun could do.  So I saw Bone Collector at a good price and got some 3-1/2" Hevi-shot #7s and headed to the range.  Oh, and I also followed Clark's directions for a deep clean.
Results were a little disappointing.  I was expecting to get 250 in 10" (or even better) at 40 yds, but only got 190 (sorry no pics).  Temp was around 60.  I'm wondering if I was hasty on my choke selection or if something else might be going on.  I'm thing about trying either an SSX or a Hevi-13.  Thoughts?

Pure Gold or Indian Creek in .670 should do the trick for your gun and h13 #7's

The 835s usually like a choke between 670 - 680.  The Indian Creek 675 is a very good choice.

Bet that 190 was still way better than what you were getting. Good luck.

I shoot an 835. I picked up a carlsons lb choke(.683) and shooting 3.5" longbeard xr #6s and I'm getting 250 in the 10" circle

Thanks, guys.  I didn't think to pattern the Rem Nitros with the factory choke, but I did try one with the BC.  It was so bad, I didn't even keep the paper.  Don't remember the count, but it was well below 100.
I've looked online for a Pure Gold, but they seem to be out of stock for the 835.  I originally looked at the Indian Creek, but balked a little at the price.  Of course, if I'd bought one to start, I might not be looking to try another one.  Does no one have any love for either the SSX or the Hevi?  I can get either of those for around $35.  At any rate, I'll probably leave the set up I've got for this season and look to improve for next year.
I wonder what the difference is between the SSX and the Bone Collector.  Both are Truglo and .670 if I'm not mistaken.

Between the two you are asking about I would probably go with the Hevi choke, though I am pretty sure some have had great luck with SSX and 7s.

I would give the Primos Jelleyhead a try also.  I tried it with 3.5" Hevi 7's way back when and got somewhere between 225-250 at 40 with it.  I wouldn't knock 190 as long as it was nice and even, bet it was a little more forgiving at 20 yards too.

I patterned my 835 today with a original JH and #5 LB at what I thought was around 40 yards range finder showed it was 44yards. I wish it was tighter, but it would still destroy a turkey.  Another choke to try is the colonial arms choke (original makers of the star dot) it is supposed to be same as the Star Dot. That maybe what I try next. Does anyone think I should try the LB #6 instead?
