Post by: 243kid on July 16, 2020, 11:45:35 AM

I picked up my first long box this year at Unicoi. Have been very pleased with the fiddle paddle I got from Marlin.

I picked up my first longbox this year from Jeff McKamey of Twisting Creek Calls. It is a great sounding call and you can get really loud with it if you like. It is a mineral poplar/bloodwood combo.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200716/682d3192172d42e549903d5a5d5db9db.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200716/0e9ab088a479bfee7ff165e577aa877b.jpg)

Lots of great callmakers out there, a few of the better ones that come to mind include:

Ernie Fetters
Billy Bush
Ed Terefencko
Marlin Watkins
TJ Johnson
Jeff McKamey
Ralph Snodgrass
Dan Wittenberg
Steve Mann
Scott Basehore
Mike Lapp

You should probably get one from each so you can truly assess which one you think is the best, lol.  :)
Some of those guys have calls ready to go now while others have fairly long wait lists, something to consider if you are in a hurry to get a longbox in your hands.

Lots of great call makers out there, no question. Out of what I've used, and there's a lot I haven't; Marlin Watkins has been unbelievable. Worth every penny for ease of use and versatility. I have two and they're my prized possessions. I would highly recommend one of his Fiddle Paddles (Long Boxes). Plus, the man is a joy to do business with.

All the makers named so far are top notch. But to my ear, and only going own one and hunt it, hard to beat a Billy Bush.

Which wood combo you have there? I have a Granadillo over White Limba and a Canarywood over Butternut  from him. Both amazing and both gonna get hunted. Unbelievable sound from both.

Serviceberry/eastern red cedar. Hunted it hard this past season and the gobblers loved it

According to what's always been told, the grain in that call is all wrong. Just proves you never know what will work till you try it.

Check out Dave Halloran's Longbox. I have the Ebony over black limba. Real turkey killer and plays super easy. He has them reduced from $150 to $135 on his site now.
Thinking I'm going to get the Ipe lid Longbox for next season.
