Ok I'm ordering a custom box call. I'm thinking of the eastern red cedar paddle with a dogwood box or a sassafras box. Opinions on both combos?
My suggestion is for you to contact T J and get you walnut over poplar fiddle box... Walnut over poplar is always in my satchel...
I think the most sure thing in a box is walnut paddle over butternut in a short box
and
cedar over butternut in a longbox
Walnut/mineral poplar is the box that stays in my vest the entire season.
My favorite box is also a walnut/poplar Albert Paul, hard to beat that wood combo. SS kwila/butternut also sounds excellent.
I am not an expert, but I think most of the custom call makers will give you a lot of help picking the best call for you. I finally broke down and ordered a custom call from Josh Farley and he was awesome. I wanted to use wenge in the call so he did a prototype for me and it sounded awesome. I asked a lot of questions and he even sent me a " how to " youtube video. Great call, great experience and a great guy. :z-twocents: Al Baker
Not sure about a dogwood box but the cedar over sassafras makes a very good box call, long or short.
