Wondering why. Is it hard to play, hard to condition, or have I just not been paying much attention to the discussion. I have a red slate and like it ok but not my favorite. I have a gray slate on a two sider I really like. Just wondering about green slate.
I'll step out there and reveal some secrets. Green slate is the way to go. In no particular order: Mark Cornelius (Mac) walnut pot, Brad Roberts in a cedar pot, Hank's in osage and Paul Hicks in walnut.

Agreed on that. I got my first green slate from Gary Anderson this year. Had no idea what I was missing till I first ran that striker across it. Talk about a natural nasal hen sound

Yeah, you've been under a rock (No offense, I mean this light heartedly). I think green slate is likely the most popular of the colored slates to hit the market the last few years.
Green and red are about equal other than literal color, purple too really. If you're not too happy with the red you currently have I would recommend trying green from a different maker rather than a different color from same maker. The common consensus is green runs the highest, red is middle, and purple has the most bass in it, but as I said before they're all about equal and a maker can tune any of them about the same, it's likely just how they get tuned because of that preconceived notion of how some people think a call "should" sound; but that's delving into a whole different can of worms.
All of the colored slate will truly shine with a fresh scrubbing of scotchbrite to the slate and the striker tip, it doesn't require the scrub to play, but you will notice how much brighter it sounds when fresh scrubbed. They require a little extra attention to keep the surface fresh scrubbing multiple times throughout a long morning hunt but the tone/playability of the calls makes up for that minor inconvenience.
I have several green and red from various makers. To me the green is higher pitched. I prefer the red. Specifically Buster's.
I have a green slate in a Curupay pot that Steve Morgenstern made for me last year and it's great. Someone recommended him for a green slate pot. I also have a Lonzo Trice green slate in Bubinga pot that runs well.
My Spalted Maple With Green Slate. From Mac Turkey Calls is actually my favorite pot call.
I have bought and sold 11 different green slate pots over the past few years. Paul Durham gets my vote for his ziricote green slate over glass. Didn't kill with it this season BUT it got a ton of responses. Dustin's green slate over glass in a cherry pot, Brad's cedar pot green slate over glass and Buster's green slate over glass in a persimmon pot would be a 3 way tie for 2nd IMO.

Paul's Green and Red slates are as good as they come. I too would recommend reaching out to Paul Durham for a green or red slate, whichever is available and you will not be disappointed.

Brad Roberts green slate in a cedar pot is a turkey killing machine.
If I could only carry one surface it would be green slate. If I could only have one person make that call it would be a Buster Halford persimmon pot.

I have a green slate / grey slate in bocote i got from Bill Lyman a few years ago. I sub it in for a glass pot in the lineup quite often.
Are there different types of green slate? I've noticed in pictures of calls, some green slate looks dark almost like grey slate, whereas others look much lighter, almost like a mint color. I've owned a few green slates, and the ones I've received have been the latter. If there are variations, is there any difference in terms of how they run and sound?

I believe it has to do with mine it comes from, depth it comes from and if I am using the right term here which I do not think I am vein it comes from. Each can make a difference. At least that is how I understand it. I think there are only a couple of mines for green slate, that may be red slate though.

Yes, just like grey slate it's not all the same. Comes from different depths of the quarry, and has different density. That really light colored green is too soft IMO you can see the the surface scratching up just by playing it. Over time you'll wear the sweet spot thin and change the sound of the call.
My first pot call was green slate in walnut pot from Mark Cornelius in 2018. Have James Witmer green slate also both are fine sounding calls.
I've got a Nathan Taylor green slate in cherry - and I think it's the most "turkey" sounding call I own, compared to the birds I hear in my hunting spots. It hasn't seen nearly enough vest time but I expect great results from it this coming spring.
I have a Brad Roberts in Pataschio and a Dustin Jones in cedar and each has its own unique sound and agree green slate plays a higher-pitched sound, both will get vest time...

The top picture (darker) is the green slate I prefer. The bottom green slate (lighter) seems to be the newer supply of green slate and I'm not a fan of it. The darker green slate grips better and has a better sound in my opinion.
I have a Brad Roberts Green slate in a cedar pot along with Buster red slate. Love them both. But I sometimes have trouble running them in the high humidity of south Florida.

It will definitely be worth the wait. Larry makes a phenomenal pot call. I have a purple two-sider, a red and a green slate. The red and green are in a persimmon pot. Larry is really fond of his red slate in a persimmon pot.
You def didn't go wrong with that choice. Out of the slate calls I have and lots green I like busters the best. I hate to say this to you as you mentioned not liking red but his red is one you ought to try as well. Great calls

Mr. Halford recommended a green slate in a canary pot. Does anyone have that one and how do you like it. JLH also recommended a Canary striker.

Just picked up a green slate in a Blue Mahoe pot from James Witmer at Unicoi. It's a screamer if ya want it to be.
Buster posted yesterday that he has calls left over from Unicoi. If you want one you can get it without a wait right now.

I have one of Buster's green slate calls on the way. I think it is in a canary wood pot. Looking forward to it getting here.
I recently got Busters green slate in a canarywood pot. All I can say is it's impressive.
Got my green slate/canarywood from Buster in the mail yesterday. Played it with a JLH canary wood striker and a Neals Dymonwood striker. Sounds great with both but I think I play the straight tip striker from Neal a little better but will keep practicing with both. Thanks for the recommendations.
