Title: Aimpoint Micro S-1 doesn't fit Rem. SP-10
Post by: mcw3734 on April 06, 2020, 07:51:38 PM
Last summer I started a post about looking for a red dot sight for my Remington SP-10. I settled on the Aimpoint Micro S-1 because it is build to clamp onto a ventilated rib and requires no drilling, which was a huge plus for me. The cost was steep, but everybody assured me it was quality, so I bought one in July.

I finally got around to mounting it over the weekend before sighting it in, only to find out it doesn't fit! The website lists very specific width and thickness requirements of the ventilated rib itself, which I checked. But... it never stated any requirement for the amount of space needed between the ventilated rib supports (whatever they're called). For the SP-10, or at least the barrel model I have, those support posts are closer together just enough that the sight can't clamp on to it.

I reached out to the retailer about a refund, don't know if I'm going to get it, probably not. At the very least I will contact Aimpoint directly and strongly suggest they spell out that third spacing requirement so hopefully nobody else runs into this issue. Probably going to have to put it on eBay for a big loss.

Anyway, just wanted to post this given how popular red dot sights are and there are still some of us shooting a SP-10. Oh well, back to Truglow rifle sights this year, probably a Vortex Venom next year.

Somebody asked and now I feel dumb for not including the following information:

It appears that you need 2" of clearance between the ventilated rib supports for it to fit. That is how long the gripping device is on the Micro S-1.

On my Rem SP-10, I measure 1 13/16", and the joint isn't perfectly square so it might be a wee bit less than that.

I feel your frustration!!! ???

I tried my Aimpoint S-1 on the following yesterday...Wtby 459 20 ga, Remington 870 20 ga Compact, Winchester 1300 Turkey Gun and a Browning (new model) A5 and none of these would allow my $700 Aimpoint to work. As you mentioned you need at least 2" of clearance between rib posts for this sight to work....I wish they was stated in the lierature for this sight when doing research. Shame on me I guess. A total disappointment.  Buyer beware!

I called up Aimpoint and politely voiced my frustration. I spoke to their lead technical person who was aware of the issue. Hopefully their marketing department will make changes to their website's tech specs soon so nobody else goes through this.

What he also told me was to try filing that softer metal that makes up that long 2" tooth. the very ends of it are beyond the main scope housing and while very hard to cut, can be filed somewhat easy, according to him. And he's probably right that it would make it fit. But, I just decided to eBay it (on there now) and went with something else.

Ya man, I hear you. I really wanted that to work. It's a supper sweet sight... just doesn't fit.

MC...thank you for the info. Unacceptable response from Aimpoint however. This site is marketed 100% to Shotgun shooters and doesnt work on all of the guns I have tried thus far. $700 and very few options it seems. I have tried a few more since my post. So to add if you have any of the following...forget this sight.

Benelli SBE 1 with lower rib is a no go.
Browning Cynergy Turkey gun is also a no go.

I have a few more turkey guns I will try but it looks like this thing is headed down the river. I just shoudl have stayed with Burris FF3s....they have been 100% solid.

I was debating this sight for my Benelli M1 but now I don't think it will fit. I measured two inches from rib support to rib support with no room to spare. And that does not include the slight cures in the rib. It's a shame because Aimpoints are top of the line and built to last. I have the 9000 SC on my Winchester SX3 and it's been perfect in every way.

After talking with their US tech specialist, I learned that most of Aimpoint's customer focus are Europeans (it's a Swedish company, after all). So, I'll be it will fit being a very popular Euopean gun manufacture. But to be sure, call up their US office and ask to speak with somebody to confirm the specs. I don't know that they have a list of what will or won't fit, but it can't hurt to ask. Because yes, it's a great bomber sight, shame it won't fit many American built shotguns. Boy, did they miss out on an opportunity.

Thanks I will give them a call and ask if what they know about a Benelli M1. I am looking into a FF3 with another type of rib mount but I want the Aimpoint quality.

Lunghit......do you have something to measure the rib spacing accurately? You need to measure before the radius on the rib support starts. I can put a mic on the bases of the S-1 I have here.....just let me know and i will try and do that today for you.

Duckdiggler I appreciate the help but after some research I believe I am going to go with the Meadow Creek mount and a Trijicon RMR sight for this gun. It looks to be a very nice mount and sight and will fit this gun. Thanks again.

No problem Brother. I just got a Meadowcreek mount for my 870 20 ga last week...installed and will hopefully sight her in this week. Pretty decent little mount. Service and shipping was quick and easy. Good luck out there.  :fud:

So I emailed Aimpoints US customer service address and asked about the Micro S1 fitting my Benelli M1 field and this was their response:
Absolutely. The Benelli will be no problem. The problem only comes up on a few of the US made brands.

Seems to contradict what others are saying here especially about Duckdiggler's findings with his Benelli SBE 1. This M1 is the same era as the SBE 1 so if it doesn't fit that it most likely won't fit my M1. I am going to be buying the Trijicon RMR because I'm not spending $700 to worry about fit.

Lunghit.....to be clear....the SBE1 I have is an old HK FLAT RIB model....if you have a raised rib M1 it probably will work. I have a pair of Vinci Turkey guns I can check tomorrow for rib post spacing if you'd like. Just say the word!

I had a chance to measure my Vinci's and they have MORE than enough room on the first two "spaces" closest to the reciever.

Lunghit measure the space between your rib posts....the flat part between the posts before they radius down to the barrrel....let me know what you have....all you need is 2" and you'd be golden.

Ok the Aimpoint will fit the Benelli M1 rib. I appreciate the time DuckDiggler and helping me out. Now I have to decide between the Micro S1 and the Trijicon RMR. I already have the Aimpoint 9000SC on my SX3 so I have been thinking of the Trijicon to try something different. The Trijicon does have a 3.25 MOA compared to the Aimpoint has a 6. I believe the 3.25 is better for turkey hunting.

Not a problem! You are welcome.

All depends.....the smaller dot does provide a touch more precision especially for younger eyes. Teh larger dots can be used as a pretty reliable range estimator. I have RMRs on 2 of my Vinci T-Guns with a Scalarworks mount.....best one in the indusrty IMHO. Rock solid set ups. Most of my Turkey guns run Burris FF3s both 3 MOA and 8 MOA versions....can't say I dislike either but I have been chasing these awesome birds since 1986 so the old vision is not what it once was. I do have a slight problem with a Turkey Gun addiction however. My Affinity 3 20 ga just showed up at my dealer!! Have fun and let us know what you decide! Best of luck this season and stay safe. :funnyturkey:

I just wanted to follow up on this thread. The S-1 fit my Affinty 3 like a glove! I sighted in yesterday and am 100% confident in it. Check weld on the stock is excellent (put a higher shim in the stock) . Points very naturally. Can't wait to break her in this week! Fingers crossed.  :blob10:

Glad to hear it worked out on one of your guns. Hope you get a good bird this week. So I know the aimpoint is new but if you had to pick one between the Aimpoint or Trijicon RMR which one would it be?

I have RMRs on both of my Vinci's and probably go that way if pressed. They have been on those guns for 7 or 8 years now and zero issues with either. With the Scalarworks mounts....cheek weld is perfect and they are smaller lighter and IMO tougher. The S-1 is a great option for someone who shotgun isn't drilled and tapped and they don't want to have it drilled and tapped.

With that said.....the Burris FF3 is a whole lot of value for the price......just not as bulletproof as the RMRs.

I look forward to seeing your final project! Good luck and stay safe. DD

Thanks for the info and I am still deciding. One last question if you don't mind. Do you have to remove the RMR in order to change the battery and if so does that effect the zero? Thanks.

No problem. Yes, you do need to remove the RMR to change the battery as access is on the bottom of the sight. I would say you will be very close to re-zeroed with a shotgun but I always check my zero prior to the season starting. Also, battery life is a long, long time especially on a turkey gun. I turn mine on when I start working a bird and off when I move. So years of life is normal.

Let me know if you have any other questions. DD
