Title: First custom box
Post by: Southerngobbler on March 31, 2019, 08:32:46 PM
Who can recommend a first custom box call. I mostly use a mouth call but like to start out with a box. I have a dozen or so boxes all store bought.

Darrin Dawkins, Paul's calls, Twisting creek to name a few.

Lots of good ones out there.  How fast do you want it?  Some builders like Dawkins have multiple year wait times.

It can be complicated.  You need to play it or at least listen to a sound file.

Josh Farley and Jason Dials are reasonably price and both of them are making some absolute killer boxes now.

Dawkins, Lapp, Watkins, Basehore, etc. are making killers as well more expensive and longer waits but there great call makers.

A great first box is SS,,get a nice dbl checkered with your name personalized on it
However
If you want to just go for the top shelf tequila,,,it doesn't get any better then a Marlin Watkins fiddle box
Look on this site,,everybody wants to see them, hear them, desperately trade for one. At around $200
That's less then a mid level casting rod and reel combo or a very used shotgun and the watkins will hold its value,,tell Marlin it's your first and he will set you up right.

A great anytime box is an SSCustom! They run easy and kill birds. Al and Josh can set you up an excellent hand checked or a field grade.

Looking up some of the names mentioned in this thread and I just realized that Ernie Fetter is less than an hour from me, going to have to see if I can go there and look at some of his calls one day. Hope he will be at the Call Makers Summit at Turkey Trot this year.

My first custom call was made by myself. Ferocious calls. Lots of dust since then. Not producing the volumes as past years due to life's twists and turns. Still making the wood talk though.

Another plug for SS Custom Calls. The Field Grade might be one of the best deals on the market. I have a walnut over poplar that just sounds great. At my request, one side is higher pitched, not much rasp like a younger hen. The other side is deeper, more "mature" sounding. Just quality box calls at a more than reasonable price. Just don`t have all the checkering and pretty stuff. They are hunting calls.
