Title: Teak & Snakewood Box
Post by: gergg on January 14, 2020, 08:10:47 PM
Decided to make another box call this past weekend, haven't messed with one for a long while. I had some Teak blanks from years ago, and the Snakewood lid was already made and in my pile of calls, so I just used them. I have so much fun making these calls, the tuning process is a blast too, I can spend hours playing/sanding/tuning....my wife and son just laugh at me as I spend way too much time building these things. I created my own lid radius profile, and make them with jigs to keep it consistent, the lids are super important. I am going to change the handle profile too, want to make it unique, my own design as best as possible. I did not make a sound file of this one, but will record and share the next one. Anyway, feedback is welcomed, I know I have some room to improve the looks of these boxes....Take care, Greg

Mighty fine looking box.  One of my favorite wood combos for a hen box. Good stuff.

you asked for feedback, I love the handle and the shape of the call, the only thing I didn't like is the gold screw, made me go look at my boxes, some are gold some are like brass, I like brass better.

You ask for feedback overall good looking hen box , the handle look fine also, but looks is second in my opinion , i want it to call birds ..  that natural sound is what i look for in hen box for killing my birds ...

I think It looks great Greg!!!!! I don't think you need to change anything but you have in your mind what you want it to be so go for it. Can't wait to hear one.

Thanks, now you got me wondering about the screw, I am almost positive it is brass, but I will check them out to make sure.

Appreciate the feedback.....For sure, looks are secondary to me too, I am a crazy-man about tuning calls, if it doesn't sound right it is firewood. I will post some sound files as I make more.

Thanks Chris....Sometimes my mind wanders, maybe I should just keep it like it is for a while before I mess something up....lol....I am going to make another one this weekend, if things go as planned I will make a recording.

Thanks....never a dull moment for me relative to turkey call building, I have experimented with other "ideas", but for now I will stick with standard stuff.....I am working on pot calls too, down the line though.

Hey 3Bailey3, I took a look at the screw bag, it is indeed Brass. I think it may look so golden due to the light reflection and the fact that it has been sealed/untouched. I notice they tend to darken a bit with time when touched by human hands. I guess I could use stainless or even black screws too.

Brownell's Oxpho-Blue will put a nice "instant patina" on shiny new brass.  I imagine other cold blues will work as well.

Beautiful work there, gergg.

Thanks....I know sound is unique to each person, but at least friends & family have given me the thumbs-up after hunting with them. I was hoping to make some recordings this weekend, but I got sick, so a little behind schedule.
