Title: Lead .410 loads?
Post by: lmbunch69 on August 11, 2019, 08:15:44 PM
I've got an old bolt action 410. The gun is a hammer on squirrels out to 25 or so yards with lead 6s. Would you all try lead 6s for turkeys out of the 410 or should I try some 7.5s?

TSS # 9's. Federal, Browning and Apex make them. That would be a good start.

Nothing wrong with using lead shells , back in the day's that's all we had , but you have to think, most of us were looking for the heavier pay load guns , 10 gauge , 12 ga. Now as the evolution of better shells and loads, have come available we look for going down in gauge of guns .. 28 ga, 20 ga. and 410... in doing this we have big variety of better shells , so if i'm going down in gun gauge , i'm going to use the best shell possible long beards, Apex, Federal TSS, Browning  TSS..

I have seen more and more people opting for
smaller gauge shotguns.  I think that it's
important to know how your gun shoots (patterns)
and for me I use a superior load/shell when I use
a subgauge shotgun.  I love the Hevishot offerings
for their superior knockdown power and patterns.

If you are bent on using only lead, then shoot winchester 7.5's 3/4 oz, the pattern will run out before the energy does. Shot many rabbits, grouse and woodcock with that load.

Only Apex TSS #9.5 would I shoot at turkeys.

Have to add the federal did ok out of ONE of mine , browning did not , only tried straight full chokes with no screw in chokes . YET.

The absolute best .410 load has got to be the
new Hevi 18 TSS Turkey loads from Hevishot.

Many years ago before I discovered tss I shot a turkey at 22 yards with my 870 410. That was with my reloads of #6 shot. Pattern was good out to 25 yards. Killed that bird just as dead as my 12ga.

If you are killing tree rats at 25 yards you should be able to kill a turkey at 25 yards. I would check the pattern tho. 7.5 shot should give you more pellets in the kill area and will kill past were your pattern falls apart. See which one patterns the best out of your gun.

13 posts on hevi shot and hevi shot chokes , could he be a sales rep? If so should he introduce himself as such?
