Title: Mossberg 835 Hevi #7s 3.5" SSX
Post by: kdsberman on April 16, 2017, 09:52:58 PM
Had a real rushed patterning session today after Easter church service.  A nice 61 degrees out, however fairly windy.

I think I can do better but this is what I have right now.  324 in the 10" at 40 yards.

Great 10" numbers and looks like a nice even halo through 16-20"

324 in 10 inches at 40 yards! Man, there ain't nothing walking away from that.
If you get much more, you might be accused of using a "rifle"..................LOL!
How is it for those close shots, say 10-15 yards. Probably like a baseball.

Well I'd love to know also, but I only bought 1 box of 5 shells lol.  I almost ran out as is.

324 in 10 is a GREAT number with the 7's and that is also a very even pattern.  The Mossy does really well with many chokes and loads.  I wouldn't worry about looking for anything better.  I shoot the 7's in my 835 and they flat out hammer birds.

I don't know how much better you can do.  Stick with it.

I'm happy with the numbers, but I've seen guys on here get close to 400.

An even 300 plus at 40 with Hevi 7's is a GREAT pattern.  No turkey will get through that.  If you want a little higher numbers and want to tinker with what you already have you can do a couple of things.  Deep clean and polish your barrel, shoot it with no wind and higher temps and experiment with different lot numbers.  The only thing I see with your pattern is a POA/POI issue.  For me, I shoot 3 1/2's out of a .670 Pure Gold and get an even over 300 pattern (never fully counted every pellet) and I'm more than satisfied.  I love the 7's.  They hammer turkeys at every distance.

When you say Hevi 7s, are talking about Federal Heavyweight or actual Hevi Shot brand?

Hevi shot.  For me anyway.

I need to buy some more this year, but my wife will be delivering our second child end of March so I'm not sure how much time I'll have to hunt this year.

I always tried to "rut" the same as the bucks in my area, (mid Nov.)
Summer time babies then.
However, I was a bit late for my daughter, as she was born end of Sept.
My son, (March), I don't know what happened that year.............LOL.
