I made my first box call based on the Neil Cost design. I need more work on my checkering to get it more uniform. The box is Poplar and the paddle is Jatoba or Brazilian Cherry. Before I put chalk on the paddle I was getting pretty good sounds from both sides of the box. However, when I put chalk on the paddle the right sound board on the box went completely flat in sound. The left sound board still sounds good. Any suggestions as to what is going on

What kind of chalk did you use?
Its rain chalk, believe I purchase it from Hunters Specialties.
Try giving it a bunch of hard purrs. Maybe the grain needs to be fluffed.
Guess I would try to wipe off the chalk from the paddle first and see if running it a bunch might get the playability back. Any box(or scratcher) I have made seems to run better with virtually no chalk anyway.
Thank you, I think I will.
