Title: Why I carry a 10
Post by: I hate turkeys on March 24, 2014, 08:24:53 PM
This is 40 yards with an SP 10, Pure Gold choke and Mag-Blends. It's why I carry a 10.

Same for me! Another reason I carry a 10 is that I dont know where to buy an 8.

I had an 8, and believe me, you don't want one.  As a young waterfowl hunter who shot a 23/4" Lefever double, I was awed the first time an old "Riverman" ,who had forgotten more about ducks and geese than most seasoned hunters ever know, handed me his 10 gauge double barrel and a couple of shells to try.  Several seasons later I got my first 10 gauge shotgun.  That was 41 years ago.

I love my side by side because I can put an expensive Nitro in 1 side and a cheap black Winchester in the other.I havent had to shoot an expensive shell yet this Spring.... :funnyturkey:

Nice, what is the make of the double barrel ten gauge? Any additional pics?

What kind of side by side is that !  I like the idea of two barrels

Its more than likely an american arms turkey special. That is the only side by side 10ga I know of that has barrels that short. Unless he had them cut off.

There is a American arms o/u on gun broker but its priced kinda high -- if I could get one cheap and threaded to 10 ga rem choke it would be tempting

If I can ever find one at a reasonable price I would jump on it too. It would be the ultimate turkey killer.

I just looked at the one your talking about and it is bid up way past its worth. There was just a side by side with 26" barrel for sale on there with a buy it now for 650 and have seen them go for between 450 and 700 numerous times.

Yeah , I think it's at 900$+ if it were something nice like a quality collector grade double it would be tempting , but not for that money and especially if it it doesn't have a popular choke system , or can have a choke system put in it

But it is a over and under , and I think perhaps that may be the only o/u 10 ga ever made ?

If I could get a double for cheap , with double triggers , and thick enough barrel walls to allow re tapping it would be  very tempting

I handled one in a store here a few years back. It was really nice, but not $900 nice.  Mike

the question should be why carry a 12 or 20 when you could carry a 10 :fud: :OGani:

Goes to the Elmier Keith quote "There's no such thing as too much gun".

Agreed, no such thing as over kill, nothing can ever be too dead.

Like an old timer in Arkansas told me " with a 20 you need to be right on, with a 12 you need to be close, with a 10 you just need an address."

I don't see significant differences in pattern sizes between 20 and 10, just density - and with #7 hevi-shot, not even so much of that.  I hear #9 TSS is something all to itself.

To me the difference is the density.  I want a clean kill, and it just makes sense that 2 ounces of shot has more chance of hitting the "off" button of a turkey - and repeatedly - more than 1.75 or fewer ounces do.

I've been thinking about this lately. If you have 2  identical loads, a 2oz 12g 3.5, and a 2oz 10g 3.5, I would think that the shorter shot string of the 10gauge would have more pellets hitting the target at the same time in that millisecond of impact vs a longer shot string in a 12-3.5?

I don't know for a fact, but I'm guessing the shot string length difference between a 12 and a 10 is closed to zero unless you buy into the hype of some of those wad stripping choke claims.  I also don't understand the practical difference between when 120 pellets hit a turkey in the head in the amount of time in question.  I just don't think some things matter unless you make a living convincing folks they do.
