Title: First Fiddle Box
Post by: paboxcall on July 31, 2019, 12:09:32 AM
Hard to believe it took this long to finally get a Watkins fiddle box, but here it is. Recently traded for this mac over pear fiddle box, and I'm blown away.

If you read the forum posts about Marlin's fiddle style, everyone notes they have quite the unique sound, and this truly does. Like a two-pack-a-day kind of raspy which I like. Of course it is super easy to run - either loud and raucous for locating across big timber ridges on those quiet mornings, or more importantly this little treat of a box will run smooth and quiet for birds up close.

Marlin's calls get a lot of attention, but I think one can't fully appreciate his craftsmanship until you hold one in your own hands. I've run his long boxes but never a fiddle box, and I totally get it. Makes me want more... :icon_thumright:

I don't see me going to the turkey woods anymore without a Marlin or TJ Fiddle Box on one side of my vest and a Matt Fulkerson handled hen box on the other.

Congratulations, nice looking box. I though his fiddle boxes had a handle though? Is that a different version?

His "misfit" design has the handle.

You got a good one. Never heard that combo, but if it left Marlin's shop, it's full of turkey. Congratulations on a dandy.

Oh okay, I guess that is what I am wanting then, with the minor hand problems I really would prefer a handle i think.

Here is a link to OldSwamper's misfits sitting on top of a few regular fiddle boxes, you can see the misfits have a handle, couple other pics of misfits down in this same thread too:

I'll vouch for the fact that the call pictured above is a player.

Now that I have my Fiddle Paddle I can certainly tell the difference in how it feels, really easy to get that keekee run going with no effort at all. I will be getting more of his. Again, you have a very pretty call.

The quote from Yoder in my signature block below about quality paddle calls should make perfect sense! LOL. Congrats on picking up one of the best of the best!

Great quote. Somebody else had me pick them up a call from him, that also feels nice though I have not played it as I do not feel it is mine to mess with. Real pretty, I hope he posts a picture of it here when he gets it in the mail.

Something that has amazed me since I first observed and ran several of Marlins box calls about 8 years ago, he quite often doesn't use 1/4 sawn lids/paddles, yet consistently gets great sound quality and ease of play.

Not a lot of box call builders can do that!
