Title: Pot call for striking birds
Post by: slave601 on May 24, 2022, 11:58:51 AM
Looking for a pot call for mostly striking birds long distance. I'm usually a diaphragm caller but looking for something on windy days. Something with a high pitch Yelp with sharp cuts. Any info would be appreciated

My opinion if you are looking for a pot call that is loud look at an aluminum, copper call or ceramics. There are lots of good call makers out there but for a metal type call I would contact either Mike Yingling or Lonzo Trice. Mike makes a good ceramic also, I don't have a ceramic from Lonzo but anything he makes I am sure is quality. I got a really loud double sided ceramic from Mark Cunningham that can get has loud has you want it to.

Quick question though why a pot call instead of a long box call? To me a good long box will reach out there better than any other call. Just curious not saying there is anything wrong with your choice.

Thanks! I'll check em out. I've never cared too much for box calls. If not a diaphragm it's a pot call. I wouldn't be opposed to using a long box but I'd rather prefer a pot

Makes sense to me, I usually use a box call for striking up a bird then work them using a pot call. I always have a diaphragm in my mouth for soft calling when they are really close or hung up. Not really great with a mouth call, but good enough a some light calling. If you do consider a box call and you don't care to wait look up TJ Johnson or Marlin Watkins if you want it sooner look at Jeff McKamey. Jeff usually has some calls on hand.

I had good luck striking up birds this year with my Halloran Twisted Sister. You can get pretty loud on it.

Does the Halloran rollover from high pitch to rasp in the Yelp? I've heard of em just never heard anyone run one

Halloran makes great pot!! All the way around easy to play to boot.

But If I am  out west or home trying to give it a little extra ..especially when leafs get heavy I'm gonna use a Lonzo acrylic aluminum..Will make your ears bleed if you want..On a windy day..especially where the terrain is wide open that's what it takes.

I like many other here have more pot calls then we will ever need or really use..I carry that Lonzo at least 3/4 of the season.

I have a Titanium From John Sinclair Custom Calls in Mexican Bocote wood pot that is hands down the loudest pot call I have ever heard, I have to hold it outside the blind when I use it because it makes my head hurt it is so loud when used with one of Neal's diamondwood* strikers. Also as mentioned a copper from Mike Yingling.

Just watched some halloran videos. Very sweet sounding calls. I'm going to try and find some on the lonzos. I've heard of these calls for years but I've been straight diaphragm for so long I've never dig into em much till now

Here are a few more pot call builders that build awesome calls, these are in no order : Clay Townsend, Mark Cornelius, Buster - Larry Halford and Kenneth Mullins, my advice would be to contact some of these and get their opinion on what kind of call your wanting etc... These guys know how to tweak a call to get you the most sound out of a call...
