Title: Most UNDERATED striker (material)
Post by: southern_leo on March 25, 2018, 12:58:43 PM
Thought it would be fun for everyone to voice their opinion on the most underrated striker, material wise. Everyone always wants dymondwood, purple heart, and snake wood, but there are a bunch of others that are fantastic that don't get the attention they deserve. I'll start....

Yellow Heart and on a lesser note good ol hickory

An old plexiglass striker from the early 90s is my 'go to' on slate during those damp hunting conditions.

Got a halloran hickory this year that is nasty on his zebrawood green slate and the CM. I'm also really really loving the Macassar ebony from Stuckey! Sounds great on anything. Looking forward to trying the ebony on my halloran ceramic tomorrow.

My vote would go for tulipwood. I have a Stuckey Tulipwood that im confident would run any pot call or any surface out there.  I never go to the woods without it no matter what call in carrying.

Ramin and tulip poplar for soft calling.  Chechen is one I've stumbled upon recently that is a very versatile medium hard wood.

The most underrated striker is any quality two-piece striker. I have several that sound better than some of the more high dollar one-piece strikers I've owned. I'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to being a one-piece snob but I'm running a Halloran two-piece Dymondwood on an OG Metal Mouth cause it just sounds best with that call. So, no more snobbing for me. I'll hunt what sounds best, not what looks best. I have a PIIIILLLE of two-piece strikers to go through now...lol

Katalox is one of my favorites....very close in density and hardness to snakewood.
It almost like a snakewood with a little more grip.

A carbon tipped striker sounds great on just about any surface.  I can call loud or soft with mine and it sounds great.  I've used it with glass, aluminum, copper, slate and ceramic.

Its not wood, but I live making strikers with deer antler. You have to make sure the antler isn't super porous though. It works really well on slate and glass/crystal.

I agree with that.  Throw butternut in with it for soft tree calling.
Oak is another very under rated striker wood.
