Title: 2019 Turkey Shotguns
Post by: MS Boy on December 15, 2018, 10:33:20 PM
So if you could get any shotgun you wanted and price didn't matter for turkey hunting for the 2019 season which shotgun would you buy ?

I'd find a used 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge magnum. You can find them sometimes in nearly new condition. I'd spend the rest of the money on a good choke and variety of shells to find the best pattern out to 40 yards max. If you have to have camo you could find one of those as well.

I'm interested in Remingtons new V3 turkey pro.  It's supposed to come out next month.  Already has a rail, 22" barrel, oversized controls and a lifetime warranty.  I've shot my buddy's 26" V3 and was impressed with it.

Next would be a Beretta 350 turkey gun.  It too has a rail and can shoot 3.5" if you want.  I think it's 24" barrel.

I have 870's in 20 and 12, Benellis, Berettas and a Browning, but the V3 really interests me.

Suit yourself but plastic and pistol grips don't kill Gobblers.

If price doesn't matter than a Browning Cynergy turkey edition.  You can flip a switch to go from a long range to short range choke.  Both chokes that come with the gun work very well.  The 24" barrel Cynergy is 6-8" shorter than a pump or auto with a 24" barrel.  The Browning gold trigger is sweet.  Remember with an O/U if you ever have a miss fire just pull the trigger again....no need to pump or chamber another round.  You can choose between vented rib, ghost ring or it has a rail if want to mount an optic.  I use optics so I appreciate the rail being on the barrel.  I like the MOBU dura touch camo.  It has a good feel and grip to it.  They are expensive but they are worth it if it's in your budget.

I'm actually getting the gun I want for Christmas this year. I've got a $1,000 budget, so I picked a Stevens m301 12 gauge. Gonna put a sling on it, a Kicks gobbling thunder .660, and either a scope or good fiber optic sights. Gonna paint it.

I came in way under budget and have a fun project ahead!  O0

Cool idea, but I would lean towards a 20 for a lightweight project gun.

I just got a Beretta Xtreme Plus A400 recently and it is a fine shooting shotgun, I'm going to try a .670 Indian Creek Choke and Apex blends in it over Christmas to see how it patterns. Not sure if that is a gun you have checked out yet but I can report back after I pattern if it is something your looking at.

Santa hasn't brought me the gun yet, and I haven't seen it but.... my dad is a machinist and I intend to have him work on it so I can put a rail on it. If that's not easy, then I know he can put on some adjustable FO sights. Honestly, I think I'd rather have the sights but I've not made up my mind.

Lots of guns especially if they're turkey marketed come w holes for rails already drilled n tapped or else iron sights installed. Drilling n tapping is real easy especially in his line of work.

I'd be curious to see what the wall thickness is on a 12 versus this 20 I've got. First let me say I'm not a machinist, but it seems kinda thin for tapping. Mine measures just a little over .200. I'm thinking I'll have to attach a rail some other way.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181224/7e898ba0b9fdb9bdfb229d4251d52d5e.jpg)

I am very interested in this V3 Turkey Pro, but apparently it's the best kept secret in the country. I've called all over the place ,"including Remington", and no one knows anything about it.

You would think they would be advertising heavily now since it's supposed to be available Jan. 1st.

In my nazi state that's illegal. It's considered an "assault" gun or something stupid. You can't have any semi shotgun w a pistol grip. Not that's it's my thing anyway but cool looking gun. Best of luck w it. What's the red sticker on barrel bottom, just something from packing or does it stay there?

If I were looking NEW I'd have a Benelli in a 20ga, only thing I would do is drop a scope on top!

Im lucky to have acquired my dream gun. After hunting with it last year I couldn't ask for anything better!

Benelli Montefeltro 20 gauge (weigh 6lbs on the nose)

Bought it from an older gentleman I know that used it to quail hunt. I did a few modifications to it...

- cerakote barrel, bolt and receiver
- mossy oak wrap on stock and forearm
- drilled n tapped for Sumtoy mount with Burris FF3
- .570 Rob Roberts choke

I like the V3s but turkey barrels are getting way too short. 24-26inches is just as easy to lug around and swing to shoot a turkey. People forget how much velocity you are losing with such short barrels. I am trying to find the article but it showed such a significant velocity drop with a 22inch barrel versus a 26inch barrel that to retain the same energy, you needed to go to a larger pellet. So for example, lets say you are shooting #5 lead at 40 yards, well to get the same down range energy with a shorter barrel you would now need to go with #4s. Just my two cents.

To me my 835 is perfect. I didn't pay an arm and a leg for it, it is dependable and pretty tough. I am not gentle on any of my hunting guns. I don't care about looks or status. Just want a gun that shoots well and takes a beating. To each their own though.

My father is a machinist. He drilled and tapped the barrel for a scope, and he made the base for me (custom made by Buckman Deddy Customs :) ) I've gotta get a higher set of rings, then I'll mount a Simmons 4x32 shotgun scope. Also installed the hammer extension and sling.

(http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo30/joeylaurenyoungblood/Mobile%20Uploads/2019-01/67DF8589-80ED-4FF3-951B-DCD1A3730E5A_zpsb4nmsrhl.jpg) (http://s358.photobucket.com/user/joeylaurenyoungblood/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2019-01/67DF8589-80ED-4FF3-951B-DCD1A3730E5A_zpsb4nmsrhl.jpg.html)
I would think 4×32 would be way to much scope. Using scopes on shotguns hunting Turkey's and Deer for years I rarely ever take mine off 1x. Suit yourself though.

Got the scope mounted, now it's ready to paint:

It was very windy and a terrible day to pattern. I'll get it just right on a better day. Nevertheless, got 230 #6 Longbeards in 10 at 40, and 179 #5 Longbeards. Which one would be your choice?

I agree with Phillipshunt. If I wanted a new Turkey gun I would try to find a Remington 870 Wing master 20 gage with magnum chamber.  Easy to carry and, with today's cartridges, more than enough power and range. Great quality and if you look far and wide enough also at a great price.

So if you could get any shotgun you wanted and price didn't matter for turkey hunting for the 2019 season which shotgun would you buy ?

This is a no brainer Benelli SBE 3. The base gun is 1700$ and they have custom ones in the 2000-2700$ range. My father-in-law has 2 and bar none they are the best shotguns out there. Excellent craftsmanship. Perfectly balanced. Shoot 2 3/4 all the way to 3.5s with out cycling issue unless you are using super super light loads in 2 3/4. Most brands cant do that. They pattern amazing and come with 5 chokes. Now, you said if money was no object. Personally, I would never buy one of these because there are many other great guns out there for MUCH less but if you want the best, those are the best.

I think that topic has been discussed on Shotgunworld.  I will try to find it and you can look if you like.  I am curious to see the results but don't believe there is as much loss as expected.
I read that article and many others on the topic including watched some videos. Almost all studies showed very little difference in speed going from 28 down to 24in barrels. I think from memory it was around 50fps. But it started significantly dropping after that. 19inch barrel showed like a 200fps loss. That would make a marginal penetrating round a very bad round. There was one video where a guy literally would cut his barrel down inch by inch showing velocity with the same round. After all the research I did, it proved anything shorter than 24inch and you start losing more than you gain unless you only shoot to 30 yards, especially if you are using mild loads. I mean come on, how often has a longer barreled shotgun really impacted your hunt? (maybe out of a blind). I have hunted with a 28inch shotgun down to my father's custom SBE with a 22in barrel and not once did I find myself in a situation where having a short barrel would have helped. Just my two cents.

I already own my choice(s).
I shot a big tom in Maryland with an 11-87-felt it was too easy and bought a tc encore muzzleloader barrel. Worked on loads, powders, shot cups and killed a 3 bearded 24 lb. gobler in Delaware. This is my favorite. 5 gobblers later I bought a Pedersoli 12 ga. sxs. with removable chokes.  Once again developed loads, tested shot, patterned it to 35 yards.
Shot a Maryland gobbler at 35 yds.  :turkey2:
My 2 muzzleloaders are definitely my favorites, not just for the 7 total kills with them. But for the hours of practice and fun.

MS Boy.... Great gun I got one myself couple years ago.  I now shoot the 20 gauge m2.  Just a little help.... if I was you replace the butt pad for a limb savor bolt in pad. You can get on limbsaver website. That stock pad that comes on them is terrible but the limb savor one is a game changer.

Last year I did a fully worked over 870 youth 20ga.

This year I'm doing a fully worked over youth .410 870.

If money wasn't an option I'd get a Rob Roberts Benelli Ethos 28ga, they posted a Cerakote bottomland 28ga that was fully worked over custom with optics. That thing was bad to the bone.

And well you should be with the V3. Particularly at it`s price point, the V3`s one of, if not the, best guns going IMO. My walnut has been flawless. It should be a great system as a dedicated turkey gun, particularly so with the included optics.

I have found in my shooting my wife's you model 500 20ga with a 22" barrel hers shoots tighter patterns the my full size 20 with a 26" barrel I have to .015 to .020" more constriction than hers to match the pattern, I don't know if this is true for all guns, just my experience with 2 Mossberg built guns.

I believe even in high powered rifles the difference is negligible like 25 fps loss per inch, I would think it would be a bigger difference than that but the author has done on 3 different guns a 223, a 308 and a 300 win mag. Can you imagine pulling the trigger on a 16 inch 300WM?

That`s a sweet looking little rig. My hunting buddy wants to get one in 20, but the distributors don`t even have them yet. Slap a red dot and a sling on it ( already comes with a rail ) and, with the possible exception of no follow up shot if needed ( not usually ), might be a perfect turkey gun. I`d sure look hard at one if I were in the market. That and a V3 Turkey Pro, but I`m beginning to wonder if either`s going to be available for this season.

Tomorrow I go to pick up a gun I've wanted for years, the 835 tactical turkey. They're starting to make them again! I want it because its short, great for thick woods, easier to store in the truck, and its a 835. I've used a 835 the past several years and love knowing that gobbler is goin down. Best part is, my wife found it for me! lol

or a new Savage 220.
I actually have both, The Slayer is newer. The 220 I have was my Grandpa's 28 inch fixed full 12 gauge.  It had not been shot since 1977 when he passed away.  But I inherited it, polished the barrel and kilt Turkeys with it. Federal Heavyweights #5.

I have several benellis (sbe1, sbe2, m1 20, legacy 28, m1 12) but wont Turkey hunt with them. I wont use my beretta extrema or 400 either. I am wanting to try my 3 h&r sb1s (1old, 1 new) .410 full chokes and 1 mod choke and mossberg 500 .410 full with tss. Got an old sxs .410 that would be awesome. I hope .410 becomes legal soon.
I still always resort back to my winchester sx2 universal hunter a 26" back bored forcing cone lengthened, ported, action polished, and trigger job, Indian creek .655 non wad chatcher.  All work done by ballistic specialists angle port. Topped with aimpoint 9000.
